when someone asks a question in zone chat/guild chat...

and you don't have an answer, or your answer is "no" (as in - anyone wanna run a dungeon")...

do you reply in the negative? or just leave empty silence?

I find myself, lately, torn between the two - piping up with "No" or "I don't know" seems...well...not helpful. And it isn't, really. On the other hand, if there isn't a timely response in the positive, I wonder if whoever is asking would just like some mild acknowledgment that people actually *heard* the question, and would like any response, rather than just leaving cold silence to stare them in the face.

If someone else replies quickly, I usually don't think about it anymore - but if there's a big pile of empty silence, I debate whether or not the asker wouldn't like someone to respond at all, even if it's not all that helpful

keep in mind that I'm not talking about *sarcastic* responses to fill the silence - I *KNOW* those aren't helpful, and probably aren't appreciated in many cases.

so, I'm just curious - how do you feel? do you prefer any response, even if it's not a direct help to the question? or are you perfectly comfortable with silence if no one has the answer you need?

Empty silence makes me feel like no one wants to answer even if they know the answer so I prefer any response even if it is not helpful.

If there is silence to someone asking to run content, I'll often suggest a zone where he/she might get a response, e.g. Belkharth for Trials.

Any question on game play, where to find stuff, etc... I answer immediately if not in combat.

If it's someone obviously new to the game, and if I have time, I'll switch to whisper and provide as much help as I can.

I'll never forget the person who spent time helping me get into trading guilds, so I pass it pn :)

I normally answer even with an "I don't know" (or in the case of looking for help for a dungeon, I normally say that I'm in the middle of something and can't help at that time,) because I feel bad if people don't get an answer... that what's make people leave guilds, you know?

I mean, I reply except when I'm in the middle of some activity that heavily involves "not dying"

In guild chat, if the question is something like "does anyone want to run x", and I'm not already busy, I'll usually try to give a negative reply.

I think that even a negative reply is helpful, at least more so than just dead silence. At least the person asking knows they've been heard. At some point you've got to wonder why you're even in that guild if it keeps happening.

Seeing the issue from the other PoV, there are genuine reasons for why people won't answer a given chat, even if a guild is fairly active:

    * Most people have several chat tabs and filters on them, so they'll probably only see your message if their in the correct tab.
    * Fighting/Questing/Dungeoning/Trialing/Crafting/Trading/etc tend to absorb one's attention too much
    * I know I used to play with my chat collapsed (and used an addon so that it would *stay* collapsed *ugh*) so, I often seen chat messages a long time after they were posted.
    * Alt-switch-itis  You lose a good portion of chat messages while switching alts

i'll normally avoid chatting or speaking, in-game, like the plague...unless i'm farming gear and running the same dungeon over and over again...at which point - i am all in on any kind of random conversation...plus, i'm normally not too sober during those runs, and, that helps make things a little more interesting...

recently though i've switched most of my playing time from the NA server to the EU server (PS4)...it's off hours there, but, seems as though folks are much easier to get along and have fun with...

been having fun branching out on some low key trolling from here on the forums to zone chat in game...

If someone says something in chat and I know the answer, I respond. If I don’t know the answer or can’t do what they’re asking, I don’t respond. I sort of expect the same from others so a non-response doesn’t really bother me much.

Empty Silence just reinforces the "games dying" aspect.. The person thinks no one around, no ones online = Game is dead..

I try to answer as best i can, if its about dungeons i say i don't do them because of ping.

It's a relief knowing I'm not the only one who worries about such things. Usually I don't respond if I don't have a helpful answer because I don't want to come across as sarcastic or negative if I do answer "no" or "I don't know" to something. I also don't want someone to be like, thanks for nothing, ha. But I have wondered if they would like some sort of response so they don't feel like they're yelling into the void.

I rarely participate in guild chat or in zone chat...I am not naturally chatty, nor do I often look at the scrolling chat box. But if someone asks a question about the game, and I know the answer, I will respond. Especially in a beginner zone where people are new and don’t yet have guilds or in-game friends.

If nobody else is responding and I don't know the answer I attempt to look up the answer or re-direct them towards someone that will have the answer. Google is a fine tool. If it's something like asking if I want to run a dungeon I try and say yes if I am not doing anything or with something like, "I am in the middle of doing x at the moment but maybe later we could run one together when I am finished?" Or "That is beyond my skill level but I'll be cheering you on." I generally try to answer in guild chat 100% of the time if nobody else answers but do sometimes just ignore zone chat.

If I don't know or not in a position to help in zone chat I won't respond. I might switch to whisper if I am not sure what is really being asked to avoid cluttering up chat. If I am in a group or guild chat I will always respond regardless of the type of answer.

Once, in a strange instance, a guy threw a fit because I answered his question with "I don't know", saying I shouldn't have even said anything in the first place, and basically cussed me out. I was just trying to show that someone had read it and I was tryyyyyyyyyying to be polite >insert Jonah Hill meme here<

Nowadays, I usually burn eyeholes into my screen hoping that someone who does have an answer to their question will respond. If no one says anything, I will respond with a "not sure, sorry m8" :#

thank you all for the replies - as I suspected, there's...not a really strong consensus, as to whether to reply or not. However, it *seems* like the general response is mildly in favor of getting any response, and I guess I'll mostly stick with that

feel like maybe I should have made this a poll, but whatever

I guess responding in chat, yea or nay, is going to be a bit of a crapshoot any way you look at it
