The only way to not be severely disappointed is to buy crates with the express purpose of expecting perhaps 5-10 gems from each to then use for direct purchasing with gems

The odds for mounts are very poor, but it does happy. The non-Apex mounts aren’t too absurdly rare, but Apex and Radiant Apex cannot ever be counted on to appear

(Though...one of my friends somehow seems to get an Apex in damn near every season from free crates >.> lucky ****)

See my signature. I wrote that just after I have opened 40 crates and got no mount. Now I don't spend any crowns for the crates. I'm done with it.

Just stick with free crates. Between event crates and login reward crates, I've gotten hundreds of gems.

The only problem is that this will take time, so if you really want something out of the current crates, it won't help you.

    !!COMING THROUGH WITH MATH!!

Some small scale math for you from my own spreadsheet. I've got 7 apex mounts and a total of about $500 spent on crates. I spent approximately $72 per Apex Reward. Assuming you spent $80 and bought 11k crowns, it comes up to 137 crowns to $1. This means that Apex Reward mounts are approximately 9864 crowns each, or just under 10k crowns a piece. That's twice as much as the most expensive mount that's ever been in the store. That's as much as a nice in-game house. It's also a fancy dinner with your family, catching your favorite band live, some sapphire earrings for your sweetie, or about half a year of ESO+ time. And those things are guaranteed, unlike the mounts.

Now if we extrapolate the much, much larger data from Crown Crates.com, they have data for 6381 opened crates. If we round it out and assume they're buying the best deal with 15 crate packs for 5000 crowns, that means there's been about 2,125,000 crowns spent on crates. Again, if we assume the purchase of the crown pack with the most value, at $149.99 for 21000 crowns, it's approximately 101 crown packs or about $15,000. On Crown Crates.com they list the chance of an Apex Reward as being about 2%. This means it averages out to nearly $300 per mount. That is 2 $150 crown packs, or 42000 crowns, which is nearly ten times as much as the most expensive mount that has ever been in the store.

And keep in mind that 1. I did a lot of rounding to simplify the numbers and 2. probability doesn't actually work like that. The fact of the matter is random is random is random. That my small scale data compared to the larger data subset varies by over $200 illustrates that pretty well. I have been, compared to the average person, exceedingly lucky.

People have spent thousands of dollars trying to get Radiant Apex mounts and walked away with bust. At the end of the day it is what it is: gambling. Don't play with money you're not willing to lose, expect to walk away with nothing.

One day, i felt lucky... I had 9000 crowns in the bank, so I bought 15 crates... And received a slap in the face for it. Its gambling, and the odds are not in your favour.
Player 1 "You all suck, dont you know how to play this game?"
    Player 2 "Huh?"
Player 1 "just run passed everything!"
Player 3 "We could just kill them on the way"
Player 4 "Why am I 89% of total DPS, one of the only ones that Qued as DPS, and yet in a group with 3 other DPS that cant seem to kill the basic mobs in a normal dungeon, and being told I suck?"
    Player 1 "Whatever, GFL"
Player 1 has left the group...

There are horror stories of people spending thousands chasing the radiant apex mounts, but aside from that it's not as bad as everyone says. Everything except radiant apex can be bought with gems. And honestly, the radiant apex is so rare that you might as well pretend it doesn't exist. Between the free crown crates from daily rewards and a pack of 15 crates bought, you'll have more than enough gems to gem-purchase an apex mount if you don't luck out with RNG.

In my experience, if I buy 2-3 large crate packs per season, I get literally everything I wanted and so very much I had no interest in. I have at least one apex mount from every season and I got the Plague Horse last year. I'm usually sitting on 800-1500 gems also. The big trick with crates is to ignore the level of mounts you cannot at least buy with gems. Pretend they do not exist. Do not try to get them. If you end up with one, cool, but you have no idea the insane levels of money some people have spent trying to get one on purpose. (It was thousands of irl dollars and they still didn't get one)

Obviously, be smart about it. Don't throw money at crates if you really shouldn't.

It's pure RNG, there is no way to calculate chance percentages. I've bought the 15 batch and got nothing but pure junk from them all. Then I've bought one and got a rare mount, a pet, and two costumes out of it o_O

Personally, I say just bank the gems you get from the free crates. They'll add up quick, and you'll eventually be able to buy whatever you want later. Crates return after some months, usually for a week or two. Unless you have disposable money or ABSOLUTELY NEED something don't stress yourself by buying them.

I'll drop a few numbers only listing crates that i bought with crowns, not including free crates.

    - 60 Reaper Harvest crates. Got 1 apex mount, no radiant.
    - 45 Hollowjack crates. 0 apex or radiant mounts.
    - 64 Scalecaller crates. 0 apex or radiant mounts.
    - 64 Wild Hunt crates. 2 apex mounts.
    - 64 Flame Atronach. 1 apex mount.
    - 64 Dwarven. 1 apex mount.
    - 64 Psijic. 1 apex mount.

That's 425 crates. I've never gotten a radiant apex mount, and only 6 apex mounts(1 camel, 3 guars, 2 wolves).

I am not saying that this is what was spent, but that is 170k Crowns worth of Crown Crates for about 20k worth of mounts. Roughly speaking.

waht about costumes and pets and non apex mounts? crown crates are not awesome, but if you are going to calculate the price - you do need to get ALL the things you get into account.

if your only desire is to get apex and ONLY via rng, not even spending gems on direct purchases... you really should stop buying crates becasue your chance of disappointment is 100%

crates are worth buying, ONLY if you want multiple things out of them, hopefully most things in any given shipment. spending 5k to get 2 costumes and a mount that originally sold directly for slightly more then that and I happened to miss becasue I was not actively playing at the time? as certainly worth it to me. no apex mount either, let alone radiant, but.. costumes and non apex mount was worth it regardless.

I assigned value to what the person I quoted chose to reveal. I really can't go beyond that, and maybe that is all they felt was of value. I can't make that judgement. The mounts, pets, and costumes are what sell Crates, though. Of those, the mounts are the cream of the crop. It would make sense for those to be listed, since that is probably what many people are looking to win. Obviously, I cannot say what a specific individual thinks.

What I can say is that what they mentioned is only worth about 15% of what they spent. Sadly, they had a mount return rate of only 1.4%, which is about 0.5% below average. I hope, for their sake, that the other 85% was worth 120,000 Crowns to them.

I don't think the Crates are worth buying, obviously. Otherwise, I would probably not have the signature that I have.

they are not worth buying if the only thing you want is apex mounts. but they ARE worth buying if you are looking for variety of shinies from them. aka - it depends. I've gotten so many costumes out of these crates that i never got a chance to get before, and having mathed it a bit - for the most part, i broke even. the on exception being this last batch of crates, but I also got it via crown gifting so.. meh

people keep fixating on Apex mounts and I get it, those things are unique to crates, BUT. 1. as long as its not radiant apex you want? chances are you'll be able to buy them with gems instead. 2. you should still want something other then apex mount, or the crates are not worth it, STILL

P.S. that image above with crate openings? the one with all the poisons is free twitch crates that are not supposed to contain anything other then consumables with VERY rare chance for pet or mount and kinda rare chance for those 150% xp scrolls that trade in for 33 gems. but they are also free for watching twitch streams when drops are enables, so I don't think they can be judged in the same breath as the actual crown crates. crown crates are guaranteed to have at least 1 cosmetic item in them and slightly better then baseline consumable - like xp scroll etc, with other 2 slots most likely being poisons, potions or food.
