Oh and the "there's no women on the internet" joke isn't funny and just makes you a beef wit.

It's not really a joke, it's a philosophy. One of the great features that the internet provides is anonymity. By telling your gender you are reducing the anonymity you enjoy, effectively diminishing one of its great features.

Furthermore, saying you're a woman and then presenting an argument will give you more support than your actual idea deserves, because there will inevitably be some white knights who will want to show you that they are the good guys that you should let in your pants (regardless of whether they have a chance). This results in discussions being derailed, and in the early days of the internet (i.e. when this meme was created) was justifiably seen as a manipulative tactic to win an argument, because if your intent was not to manipulate, you wouldn't mention your gender, as it's irrelevant to most discussions taking place.

On top of that there is a safety concern. People (both male and female) are more likely to want to help women and more likely to trust women. So anyone posing as a woman (even if it's a man) has an easier time exploiting or defrauding someone online. So to protect yourself it's best to assume that anyone who claims to be a woman is actually a man, unless you can verify it.

In essence the main reason that this meme is singling out women, is because most internet users at the time when this meme was created were indeed men. But the essence of this meme is that what you have between your legs is irrelevant, what's relevant are your arguments.

It never meant that there are literally no women on the internet, it was just the desire to create a perfect meritocracy where factors determining social status IRL (like gender, but also wealth, family background, race, education etc) would not influence the discourse, and ideas would stand on their own merit.

Now I can of course see why you would think it makes one a "beef wit" by making that statement. You've been told since the 60's (with increasing intensity as time went by) that men are superficial and shallow, only think about one thing, and that everything men do is an assertion of male dominance over women. Hence this statement must be a territorial claim like "internet belongs to men" to be in line with everything you've been told all your life, so it's not surprising at all that you resort to outrage and insults, as you perceive it as nothing but misogyny and chauvinism. But it would do you good if you did learn about the meaning of the memes before stating your opinion on them, because then you would show the men who are actual misogynists and chauvinists that the stereotypes they hold about women are not true.

So yeah, there are no women on the internet.

I try to split 50-50, but right now I am higher in females, due to some attrition.

Can we guess what the population looks like? I am going to guess a 60-40 split for characters (more male than female).

Well, based on what I see early morning MDT in Vivec when I log in to start writs, I see a lot more female toons than male. Pretty sure that's not germane to the actual population balance though.

I have almost an equal split, think it’s 7-6 in favor of women. It doesn’t really have anything to do with my own gender (male) as far as I can tell. Although it does create an interesting ongoing social experiment in how different gendered characters are regarded (I.e. I get more random friend requests while playing female characters).

    My actual gender = male.

In-game = 10 characters, all females, 8 of them nords.

2 reasons, first I like to play male characters but I always name them "Christian XXXXX" since Christian is my given name. But you cant call a character 'Christian' in ESO (prolly on forbidden words list cause of the religion). Second - female models look way better in-game. Especially the orc.

As a female gamer my character list of 14 currently is... Mostly male. xD I just don't like how some of the armors fit over the female form they offer. Most are either too bulky and undefined and the rest are so tight and form fitting that they make no sense to me. >-<

So yup those are my statistics. Lol.

My list is 5 female characters, and 9 males.

I have 7 characters, all ladies. I am also a lady.

Since some conversation revolved around this: I can count on one hand the amount of times since launch that I’ve been assumed to be or “treated as” a woman. I’m almost always, always “dude, bro, brah, my man, my dude, brotha, bruv, or brother.” Or something else along those lines. Doesn’t bother me at all and I never correct anyone on it.

There've been entire studies on avatar gender selection behavior. I forget the exact statistics, but most people prefer avatars that match their biology.

Quite a difference between an avatar and a char, though. An avatar is supposed to represent something - so on a forum or a Discord the avatar represents the player.

Character gender choice is much more variable: some people role play the characters and choose gender based on the role they want it to portray. Others make characters that resembles themselves. Others make characters as pretty as they can - I'm one of these suckers for a pretty face - while others simply love experimenting to see what they can do with the character creator. You.'ll need much more information than simply the character gender distribution if you want to learn something about the player base.

Im actually pretty even with my characters, as 5 of my characters are male, with the other 5 being female.

Im a huge RPer, so all of my characters are directly themed after certain traits and archetypes that I envision for them, so the gender is largely irrelevant. I do however, pick after what I think is coolest for the given character.

Dunno about orc... My orc boy is the shortest fattest jolliest orsimer around and he is adorable eating his turkey leg. 😂 He cosplays a samurai (akaviri heavy+soulshriven swords).

Background story: he's a lazy butt that's too caring and loving to fight "for glory", so he just eats instead. Got too big, became a tank by nature. Now he's that big weird kid that protects the nerds from the bullies.

I'm a guy and I have both female and male characters, I just come up with a character idea and the gender goes with that, my big manly orc stamsorc is you guessed it, a man. Whereas my magica sorc is female. Would be interesting to find out this statistic though I do agree

I also have no issues looking at a chiseled male backside for hundreds of hours (to all the insecure males out there who are wondering, no, it hasn't made me gay yet).

Give it time and it will wear all your masculinity off, I'm warning you :D

As to the statistics, I'm male, my main is male but four out of my seven characters are female. In the long run I plan to have ten toons (one for each race, five males and five females).

Running around Tamriel I haven't noticed any particular preference for either sex, so it's either balanced or I just don't care enough to notice.

    Got 6 chars, 3 male, 3 female.

If i have the choice in a game i will usually go with a female charcter, especially in games that i will play lots of hours. I'd rather look at a beautiful woman for hours and hours than a guy.

    EDIT: i am a male

Hello Devs and people from Zos and stuff,
    hello @ZOS_GinaBruno @ZOS_KaiSchober and @ZOS_JessicaFolsom

there is something i am really really really interested in. There is a subjective feeling, that most female players play female chars and a huge part of male players play female chars, but there is no official statistic showing it.

I really would like to know, how many chracters in ESO on the differenz platforms are male and how many are female, a percentage. No need to split it into female and male players owning them, just a general number of heroes and heroines in the time of the interregnum.

It would be so awesome, if you could provide a number. Please please please *_* :)

This is a common assumption in most online games. But I think most of the polls on character choices have shown it to be closer to a 50/50 split with male characters actually being more common than female, especially among male players.
Here's some of the polls on the topic:
https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/241360/i-am-curious-to-see-how-many-males-and-females-play-a-male-or-female-character/p1 (44% male playing male, 23% male playing female, 22% female playing female, 4% female playing male.)
    https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/310469/which-gender-do-you-choose-to-play-in-game-and-why/p1 (28% male, 31% female, 39% both)

What I find most interesting is that the majority of people seem to assume everyone else makes the same choices they do and for the same reasons. For example if they're male and play a female character they assume most female characters are played by men, if they always make their character look like themselves they assume everyone else does too, and so on.

(As for me I'm female and the characters I play most are female, but overall I have 4 female and 4 male characters, just because that's how it worked out - I pick the gender based on what suits the character I want to make and don't see it as anything to do with who I am in real life...otherwise I'd be more concerned about their willingness to kill anyone who threatens them or is in the way.)

Eight characters, three females, five males.

Of those three girls, one is a gecko I don't much use, one is a kitty, and the other is a magsorc. I don't find particular joy in playing with the sorc. I don't know why. Maybe because magsorc. Maybe because woman. Probably the former. The kitty is alright, but then again, cats are life. The gecko is on hold. For when I decide that my imperial healer just isn't cutting it and I properly level her up and gear her to replace him.

For males I have a stamblade, my DK tank, my healer, a mule, and a warden I made to test the class when they came out.

I spend most time playing the males. They just feel more natural, somehow, kicking ass and taking names. Besides if I'm going to spend thousands of hours staring at a character, they might as well be something pleasing to the eye.

ok so this again...long story short:
The Reason why human males play games with female characters especially on 3rd person camera its as simple as that...the 4$$ and curves...because in the end we are the ones who spend 10-18 hours per day watching at someone's butt(and not getting arrested) and for a majority of people including me that would be a nice woman(cat/lizard) body shape glancing...sure I have no issues playing male characters but just as stated...if im to spend 18 hours looking at someones butt then it rather be a woman's back!

P.S. also this is one of the main reason you dont really see children in mmos...cuz I assume staring at a child 24/7 goes against some laws? and if so then why do we still have crown crates and gambling stuff in games?...the irony right?

Dude, I like the riffing, but the idea was alot simpler than that. It has nothing to do with meritocracy or anonymity.

When someone says there aren't any women on the internet, its a warning not to make any assumptions about gender, specifically for the kind of guys who use it as a means to "connect" with women, who may not actually be women. Its intended to be humorous and its funny because it contains a truth.
