Self-Discovery Through RP Character Creation - You ever notice how...?

Greetings, all!

I'm just tinkering with builds and going over some details and one thing I've noticed over the years is a distinct pattern to my preferences in characters for RPGs. I like underdogs, 'second-class' or non-conforming citizens/races, the marginalized and misunderstood, companions to play off of, and I tend to enjoy gitting gud with the unexpected. This isn't something I set out to do originally but it seems more and more that I find the pattern after the fact. I loved Argonians before Morrowind came out in 2002 but didn't play a tabletop RPG until 2011, when I played a droid in a Star Wars game, so it's neither limited in format or setting. I often think about what it means for me, in a psychological (?) sense - what does it say about me that I gravitate towards these clear choices?

Do ya'll ever sit back, make a character in ESO or other game, and then go: "Holy moley, I made another ____!"?

White hair. I'm not sure why, but nearly all of my characters in games across the years (including D&D) that actually see playtime have white hair. Maybe it's something I wish I had... or hope to have someday (instead of following the family male bald pattern).

Same here. It's been like that for almost all the games I played. A usually unused race class combination is my goto for char creation. An orc dk healer, a nord sorc healer, a Breton sorc tank, a bosmer nb tank... The list goes on.

If they can do it, anyone can, including you. You've proven that a million times. Do you love yourself yet?

Seems some people are not interested in the appearance of their characters. I think many of us have aspects of this game we like, love, and simply don't care for.

None of that seems as worrisome as when someone's @name, or especially their character name, is their IRL name. Especially if that name is terrible.

No one should ever be named Skylar.

    No.
Because I -know- from the start that I will make another... yeah, that. One way or another. All the characters I actually care about have certain similarities in their backstory... are some sort of misfit, fluff-wise... some sort of outcast or outsider... some sort of damaged goods in the eyes of others... some sort of misunderstood soul... always the supporting character type, never the main hero type...
Hey, no surprise there, they are all facets of my soul after all!
I hit randomize and I'm done.
Well, I suppose that tells how much you care, huh?

Playing an MMORPG without the -roleplaying- part... Sacrilege!

Out of curiosity, do any of your characters look particularly pleasant/unpleasant/etc. to you? I bet there are some pretty entertaining looks to be had with the ol' Randomize button!

Some folks make characters that resemble themselves or have desirable characteristics. I like to make them extremely eccentric! Not necessarily as ugly as possible, but unique. I"m not a fan of moustachios, but my imperial NB has a real banger.

I use randomize to get inspiration. When I find something I can go with I customize from there. My first character 2 1/2 years ago took me over an hour to make and name. I'm always very indecisive with all the options.

I do like odd race/class combos that aren't BiS. Makes it feel more like my own versus what I "should" play.

My typical characters are mainly non-magic ones. And their backstories are very similar. Barbaric or misunderstood warriors that are shrouded by dark presence or creating a black mysterious aura... but they are the good people inside. Their characteristic behaviour is nearly always “chaotic good”. Fight for justice and to protect others in their unorthodox way. Like a bloodstained warrior or hunter with a halo above his head.

    Always playin this way :)

I guess there's a certain limit to what we can do just baked into the game but I'm always amazed by those little Ah-HA! moments after spending an hour on backstory, lol

Interesting that you brought this up. I so often create a character that is the complete opposite of me: tall, slender, male, black hair, very white skin, magic, exceedingly confident, extroverted, epicurean, witty, ....well, okay, a couple of those things apply to me, but mostly they don't.

(edit to say: Sadly, I can only do dark brown hair in this game. Perhaps one fine and glorious day, angels will sing and black hair will be available for Altmer.)

I hit randomize and I'm done.

I do the randomise bit and keep the features that I like. Then randomise again until it works out to something that I like.
I usually spend around 40 minutes on each char. Then they get deleted, as they look different in the game...

Anything to stop them from looking like players from FIFA.

I have discovered from D&D that I tend to play either Lawful Nice or Cooperative Evilcharacters.

My Vestige is Lawful Nice and will help anyone, no matter how stupid the quest.

My Silencer is Cooperative Evil, willing to help out for the greater good if it gets her shiny baubles and more people to murder for the glory of Sithis.

Mine are all pretty different. I actually find it weirder than if they were similar. I really like to make elaborate outfits for example and I have a character who I can go all out on them with because he's rather flamboyant and feminine but then I have another who refuses to wear anything other than the pirate swab costume or basic armor and will only ride the imperial horse. Or at least if I put anything on him other than that it just feels wrong. Mine aren't even the same gender I have four of each. I do tend towards androgynous characters but I do have one who is scruffy masculine and one who is all curves. I do enjoy stories with different types of characters though maybe that's why. o3o

A lot of my characters look the same since I try to make them pleasant looking and about the same size as me IRL. So all of my characters are short, skinny, with itty bitty boobies.

Customizing my characters is probably my favorite thing to do in the game, tbh.
