Yes, the whole "save the world" storylines are uninspired and boring. It derives from deeply-ingrained mythologies that have held sway in English-speaking (Western) cultures for many centuries now. The fantasy genre as a whole often pulls inspiration from mythology, and aims for an "epic" feel that reinforces the tendency to couch itself in these narratives.
Departure from that is a reason why I really, really liked Dragon Age 2. It was a personal story. And it was a political story. Yet the story is part of what was heavily criticized. Apparently if you don't do "save the world" in epic fantasy, you're a bad game.
Absolutely. I'm fed up with doing the saviour of the universe thing. All it seems to accomplish beyond having nowhere else to go is making the world feel smaller and making my character feel very isolated and apart from it. At least Dragon's Dogma did an interesting take on exactly that problem at the end; but in most cases it just seems to end up with "yay you, you saved the world something something, we still don't care about you now sod off while I continue this inane conversation with my neighbour."DeltaForce64x wrote: »I do NOT want to save the world, let them *** burn for once and give us something personal story please, sure, saving the world is epic,awesome,amazing..but what if we wanted something personal, something a bit emotional, something heroic but not saving the ENTIRE universe? You know this can be happen if they wanted, no, I'm not talking about bloody "I will die for you" no I dont want my beautiful character die. But I also want my teammates be alive, I want my companions have their own lives, happy

I do agree though, MMO games really should have a less heroic level of story telling. They should focus on that millions of people will be multiple heroes rather than millions of people being the hero.
Sadly though I think many don't enjoy the side quest never meaningful form of story telling. DDO and EVE Online did somewhat okay with this, however DDO your were still a big here (or your groups always were) and EVE was the same missions over and over because you couldn't be more epic (although sandbox RP make its own heroes and villains).
In skyrim we save skyrim from t̶h̶e̶ ̶s̶t̶o̶r̶m̶c̶l̶o̶a̶k̶s̶ the imperials Alduin, the World Eater
