Sadly, not an uncommon sentiment.
I don't get it, personally. I used to be very PVE only, but when I went into Cyrodiil to get my Master Angler fish, I expected to die (and I did die) because I didn't know what I was doing.
I figure, either prepare for PVP (Impen gear, burst damage, detect pot, or stealthy gear) or be prepared to die a lot and try not to get too frustrated.

I suggest you prepare for PVP, either by researching a PVP build, getting a group to help you, or getting stealth gear/potions to avoid combat.
I too used to hate Cyrodiil, though in my case it was getting those Cyrodiil fish for Master Angler. But I kept coming back, for skyshards, for delve bosses, and eventually I stayed and discovered that I really enjoy PVP in Cyrodiil.

If your alliance is pop-locked then yes logging out will remove you from Cyrodiil and make you re-queue to get back in.

If the campaign you are in is poplocked (has a lock for your faction's population and a queue) you usually will get kicked out of Cyrodiil if you log out to the last PVE zone you were in. If just disconnected for a short time, it usually puts you back in Cyrodiil.
If the campaign you are in isn't poplocked, then I usually log back into in Cyrodiil, so I dont know what happened there.

I'm glad you found them. Getting a group to farm the centre is a good idea. Of course, it's going to be super busy now, but outside of the event it's a bit quieter (though my small party got killed by a group of AD last time we ventured to the centre).
Good luck getting the skin, and once the event is over, I do encourage you to do the quest in IC. It's not very long, but it's a nice story.

Oh come on... That is so false. While I do PvP myself I have encountered this so many times before...
You can just hold down block and heal, or run away, people will chase you for miles for an entire hour if they have to...
You can give any signal you just want to be left alone, hell try ANYTHING. They'll still look for you.
So many times i just went there to fish, encountered a group of 5 people who kept chasing and even looking for me LONG after I was stealthed in a safe spot. Stop this "don't know your intentions are peaceful" thing.
GOD FORBID YOU EVEN TRY TO MESSAGE THEM! They'll chase you for the entire day after that and Tbag you.
I even had people camp my corpse everytime they killed me to make sure nobody comes to resurrect me, they even messaged me first that I should give up waiting. On multiple occasions.

I accidentally screwed myself so not I have to travel all across Cyrodiil and then the sewers

Imperial City is basically designed to a be a "ganker's" wet dream. In fact: I would argue this game's entire PvP system is specifically designed to favor ganking and zerging. And then they wonder why the place turns into a "ghost town" unless there is an event going on....
You would think they could figure that one out on their own.
Here is a tip for the system developers in charge of PvP on this game - getting ganked isn't fun. The only people who are going to enjoy that kind of PvP are sadistic players who simply enjoy grieving others - because it's certainly not interesting game play... on either side of the equation.
So if you intend on doing PvP on this game I would stick to battlegrounds. At least there the odds are kept more fair. This game's silly PvP works best on a smaller scale with fewer people involved - because then you actually have a chance of defending yourself and actually engaging in something that resembles combat that isn't just a lame and annoying gank-fest. But I know this advice doesn't particularly help you since you need to do Imperial City for your quest.
That place is a living hell. Unless you have a group to run with I would simply avoid it. No video game award is worth the b.s. you are going to have to endure in that sewer (and when I say sewer I don't just mean it literally).
