Instant crash on my Mac [Workaround]

    I bought this game for the first time, last week, for my 2013 Mac Pro with dual 700 GPU. It crashed on me on launch and the tech support system is horrific. I experienced the same problem where I needed a Game Consultant report to create a ticket, but Game Consultant doesn't work on the Mac. There is no email address for the company, no phone number.

    I finally copied and pasted the OS X crash report into a text file and named it myreport.txt and uploaded that to create a ticket. After no response in 24 hours, I ended up Tweeting my experience and tagging Bethesda and Apple. Someone immediately responded to that and confirmed my ticket was active and that someone would contact me.

    About 12 hours later, I received a response on my ticket. It was the "HOW TO TROUBLE SHOOT YOUR WINDOWS PC" response! LOL. Wow! I actually made three comments on my ticket about my Mac and the issue I was having with my Mac and after a couple days, they give me the standard PC troubleshooting copy/paste.

    I replied to give me a FULL REFUND and proceeded to tell the world my experience with ESO on the Mac.

    I bought it on the Playstation Store and I've been playing it for a few days on my PS4. This leads me to a question – if they finally pull their head out of their a** and do basic quality control for the Mac and get it to work, will I be able to use the same account/character on my Mac as my PS4? If so, should I expect better performance on an 8-core Dual 700 than a PS4, or worse?

    I'm enjoying the game a lot, so far. Last MMORPG I played was WoW, and this kicks the crap out of it. :)

    Oh yeah, if I can't launch the game, how do I patch/update it? My launcher is working and it's loading the news, etc. Are updates done in the game that won't launch?

    Another note – the Mac Installer doesn't download when the app is in the background or the Mac's screen saver is on. It gives you the download speed in the installer and if you bring any other app to the foreground, the speed of the download slows down to a crawl. I literally had to bring the installer to the foreground and then walk away from the Mac.

    So add that to the bug list for this 4-year old app.

    I just installed ESO for the first time. Here is what I found: The UserSettings.txt did not exist for me. Apparently a fresh install crashes before that file is created. I followed the Xcode/instruments steps (xcode> open developer tool> instruments; then instruments>preferences). This allowed the game to run. Then Close the game and the UserSettings.txt will now be present and can be modified as noted in this thread.

    This worked for me. Fresh install of ESO resulted in instant crash.

    I didn't even have a UserSettings.txt file in my ESO folder. I was able to create one via Windows (bootcamp) on my Mac. Editing the text as suggested worked for me. Didn't have to mess with Xcode.

    This has been my exact thought through the last 3 updates. I mean, I think they commented, but just the one time. And it was not helpful whatsoever. It took people here in the damn forums to come up with two solutions for our problems.
    Incredibly discouraging.

    Thank you all for the time spent researching, it allowed me to be playing ESO within 30 minutes of finding out it didn't work.

    My problem was:

    ESO would "quit unexpectedly" right after launch on my Macbook Pro 2018.

    Solution was:

    Asked a friend for a UserSettings.txt and changed

    SET MaxCoresToUse.4 "-1"

    to

    SET MaxCoresToUse.4 "6"

    Game started working immediately.

    How is this bug still here 3 content patches later?

    There's a whole host of other mac related bugs since Summerset and subsequent patches that also haven't even been acknowledged let alone fixed.

    some of the more annoying ones are:

    Skill progression trees not updating properly so have to reload UI to correct.

    Some add ons not working properly or at all - worse case is Skyshards where the icons are missing completely.

    Costumes and gear not displaying properly.

    I'm assuming only a relatively small number of mac users have suffered the instant crash issue and other post Summerset problems and as such its not worth ZoS looking into them.

    Mac user here, getting all of these exact same issues on Mac although more since the Murkmire update - I had no problems running Summerset at all except for the need to do that frame rate issue work-around. My performance degraded significantly after Murkmire, the game will no longer open in fullscreen, and it crashes every time I exit. This isn't just me, it's happening to every single Mac user who plays.

    I've played since beta (Mara group) and have been a subscriber since launch. Even in beta I didn't have half the problems I do since Murkmire. I love this game, but honestly can't recommend it to any of my fellow Mac users who ask because they'll get frustrated and bug off. It's extremely frustrating.

    yes, add exit crash to the list of Mac problems.

    Also temporary but regular game jerkiness and freeze especially in Cyrodiil.

    I didn't even have a user setting.txt file so I had to create it. I found someone on the forums that had one but the setting in the workaround didn't exist. So I added it. I have 6 cores. Here is the text in the user settings I used. It now works.
