Life from the other side of the boss, i.e. Things tanks wish you were aware of...

Hello all from the dark side of the boss, on the other side of the thinly veiled mist of aoe's, fireworks, and loads of fire! Most people know if you want smooth dungeon/trial runs, get with a guild, find friends, etc. This post isn't for you folks so the door is thataway. This post is for the folks who may be socially challenged, fearful of making friends, or just not down with the guild life. When you, as a healer or dps, queue with a tank that appears to know what they are doing (fake tanks, we ain't talking to you), please be mindful of a couple of things:

1. All that free acreage behind and beside me is NOT FOR YOU! That is the bad place, the no no zone, the place where dreams go to die. Please note that I taunt and turn the boss away from the group. That's for a reason...so you kind folks don't die! Standing next to me or behind me is literally the worst place you can be. None of you are built for 25k damage cleaves, etc. and most bosses have a wayyyyyy larger hit box than you think. Your spots are on the back side of the boss burning his cute little tushy down to the ground!

2. Please try to drop your storm atro ultimate to either side of the boss, not square on top of him. There are visual cues tanks look for that are often times blocked by the atro's big ol booty. We may miss a critical bash or a chance to heavy attack/regain resources due to poor placement of that ulti.

3. I am all about playing how you want, run the meta/don't run the meta, whatever you feel like but for gosh' sake, please DO NOT wear the Maw of Lawlogator 2 piece monster set into a dungeon/trial. The daedroth that spawns may do tons of damage but it literally walks past the boss and positions himself directly in front of the tank causing the same issues we run into in point 2!

4. Almost every good tank I know will slow to a crawl if you go running ahead and aggro 'all the things' because you want a fast run. Decent tanks are pretty good judges of group dynamics and dps levels, so let them do their thing. And if you do insist on running ahead because of your 'leet deeps', be prepared to spend the boss fight lying on the floor whilst I drag the boss right over the top of you. :)

5. Ask questions and be open for feedback. There are only a couple of dungeons/trials I can think of while pugging that lack of dps will wipe the group. Lack of dps can be countered almost always by learning mechanics. If you notice you keep dying in the group, ask if anyone knows why. Most folks I've pugged with will happily suggest some things you can do differently, inquire about food, charges, etc. Yes, there are a few bad apples but the vast majority of folks in this game are extremely helpful.

Thanks and please list more helpful tips for all!

I always like hearing what the healers and tanks have to say :D As a stupid dps, I'm not always aware of what [removed profanity] the tank is dealing with. I know yall take a crap ton of damage and also essentially keep the boss from nuking everyone. I am sorry I keep stealing all yall's syngeries... I'm just a *** for every lil bit of resources from em.

If you get a boss or big threat foe focused on your tasty little dps butt, kite them TO the tank, not away. It is ever so much easier for the tank to lock down and taunt a foe if you bring it to him than to try and chain it in when several smaller foes are in the way or it is too far away.

I know it was said before, but try to let the tank open the fight and get things set up. The slight delay before unleashing your dps should pay dividends by having the primary boss and some of the trash held in a nice tight killing zone for you and your wonderful AoEs.

This! When we wipe in a PUG I ask if everyone is familiar with the mechanics, and people rarely respond. If you are not clear about something, please ask, we have all have to learn somewhere, and people are usually happy to explain. It can turn a wipe-fest into a breezy fight.

Thank you for sharing your insights, it's good to hear from a different perspective, and it helps with learning group dynamics (though I may be guilty of point 4 myself...)

It would block so much of my screen I would move a bit and get the boss to follow me, but of course the Daedroth followed too. It's basically a tank trolling set.

And this is good for who? Not really a fan of these kind of petty vendetta, not beneficial to the group, the other dd would maybe try to rez exposing himself to more risk since the dead is lying right under the boss.
Would be better to just write simple and clear to wait, without childish moves in any case tbh.

This especially in BC2, I lost count of the numbers of times I’ve almost had a mini heart attack because there’s a daedroth running around loose then attempting to taunt it and only when it doesn’t come, realising it’s that set >_>

Same goes for Healers. I've watched too many healers run around like a chicken with their head cut off when they get aggro. Just run to the Tank, and then stand still until the tank pulls them off of you. You can take a hit or two in most cases if you have protective spells, and of course healing.

And if you die, then a DPS will pick you up. Just don't run around in circles around the room trying to escape the boss. You are only making matters worse and making it harder for the tank to pull aggro off of you.

    @Soriana, Magnificent Post!!

Not many more things to mention...
°maybe people wearing RedMountain set in Bloodroot forge...

°some little guy facing the Chudan in mazzatun for the 3rd time - like: 'the poor tank is alone and need company don't mind if it's a threat-of-death to me (and to him while resting 3x...)' - this apply to any boss with cleaves

°DDs focussing the single mobs you have not yet chained, while you already made a really nice pack of 13 mobs that start running away again untouched...

    ps:

In an easy dungeon, if 'fake tank' actually slot a taunt and do some parts of a tank's job - maybe at least they reduced the queuing time so better let them benefit from our great tanking knowledge!

Sometimes I like to Nope into vet daily with one of my mag DDs or PvP character as tank and do it no-death - that's the best way to Avenge ourselves as main tank :p

    Seriously though.

One other thing I would mention is to try to place ground effects with synergies (Liquid Lightning, Nova, etc) where they're going to hit the boss and let the tank pop the synergy without moving. Remember that the boss is usually between you and the tank, so you don't want to place the effect behind the boss - that may be too far away for the tank to hit the synergy. Immediately to the side of the boss (like the placement of the storm atro that @Soriana mentions) is usually going to be better.

You want your tank to be popping as many synergies as possible, because they're generally in a better position to hit that synergy than other members of the group, who often will be hanging back away from the boss, and because experienced tanks will very frequently be using sets that proc off of hitting a synergy. Alkosh in particular is the one that gets used a ton, and it provides a big debuff to the boss. Plus the undaunted passive gives the tank some resources back when hitting a synergy (even if that synergy isn't shards/orbs), and you don't want your tank running out of resources, so everything helps.

Yeeees Please please please learn the dungeon mechanics (this applies to everyone not just dps!)

As the tank I'm sick of being held (Dranos Velandor in Cradle of Shadows, Gaymne Bandu in Fungal 2) and the dps are sitting there attacking the boss.... Then I die and we wipe.

Its the biiiiiggest pet peeve of mine. I dont mind if you dont know, I'd rather take the time and do it right with you as opposed to wiping constantly. This also applies to me... If I dont know a mechanic, I'll either look it up, ask.... Or both so I'm not wasting everyones time.
