I run 5 Silks of Sun, 5 Burning Spell Weave and Skoria.
Spell Damage is: 2110
Spell Crit is: 53.2%
Magicka is: 29450 without food (34252 with Jugged Rabbit Preserves or any food of the same tier)
Magicka Recovery is: 704
Average DPS on Target Skeletons: ~20k without potions
Average Burst DPS on Precusor: ~25k without potions
(The spell damage looks low, but unaccounted for in the screen is the 519 I get from Burning Spellweave which has a pretty reliable uptime. I also only have purple jewlery and all 3 of my jewlery have Spell Damage glyphs so I could squeeze some more there). I also haven't retraited my gear yet but ideally 3 infused big pieces and 4 divines little pieces would add slight to these stats. As of yet most of these piece are traited poorly.
I tried to go for a true fire mage build the best I could, there could be better meta options but this is what I chose for fun. I don't really do alot of animation cancelling or light attack weaving unless it's vet dungeons so there's probably more DPS potential than what I personally get.
Weapon: Destruction Staff - I actually heal on my backbar so all my DPS is from my Inferno bar. Fire enchants as well.
You want all your passives for relevant skill lines of course, things like Undanted Mettle also help squeeze out some stats, Mag DK sorta needs it. Also try to work in that 1 piece of medium and heavy for some survivability. I only use the one bar as mentioned, skills are:
Molten Whip, Obsidian Shard, Pulsar, Elemental Blockage, and Flames of Oblivion.
Flames of Oblivion is sort of a must, as just by merely slotting it you gain Major Prophecy and Savagery which buffs your crit rating. I don't really use it much, though sometimes I do activate it since it does a couple direct damage hits over time (not counted as DoTs). It's a little oomph to DPS, but it's mostly there for slotting.
Obsidian Shard you could swap for Engulfing Flames and maybe boost DPs, but at the cost of a very potent self-heal.
Important CP:
Mage - Apprentice - Elborn, Spell Erosion, Elemental Expert
Mage - Atronach - Staff Expert, Master-At-Arms
Mage - Ritual - Thamaturge
Thief - Lover - Arcanist, Tenacity
Warrior Tree - pretty much everything in here is of use to you as a squishy mage.
I recommend dumping alot of points in Thamaturge since that's for your DoTs like Elemental Blockade. I got it to 48, but found the diminishing returns after that have started to deter me from investing further.
My Attribute split is 42 Magicka and 22 Health. This is another spot your could tinker yourself, I like the extra survivability, but since Magicka and DPS go hand in hand, giving up some health would improve that front.
Been a stamblade for so long magic and DOT is like a mystery to me lol...But anywho, I have a couple questions
- What sets do you guys run? Julianos/Silks of the sun? DKs are already tanky so that health bonus on silk of the sun seems like it might be a bit of a waste, at least until I start PVPing. It’s expensive so I’d figured I’d ask before trying it
- What’s considered good spell dmg and crit?
- Should I use swift jewelry so I’m not a turtle? Or just use the chain skill when I can?
- What DOTs do you use? There’s a lot of options!
- Should I put a ice staff on my back bar so I can block with magic and save my stam for roll dodging? Or is a res staff the better choice?
I’m not really worried about dungeons and pvp yet, just looking to run around questing and killing WBs while I learn how to magic
Thanks!
As someone who has zero interest in minmaxing and instead focuses in character concept, keep that in mind with the below. It’s creative, and probably not what you are looking for.
My dunmer ashlander vampire currently uses grothdar, innate axiom, and embershield. That may be what I settle on for his sets as I think I’ve finally found a combination I really like for him. For a while I was using valkyn skoria, but grothdar is just better for him since he’s up in melee all the time anyway. That’s what attracted me about embershield too, but I am considering switching it out for elf bane (next patch, it will work on grothdar... finally). The visual effect of embershield is so cool though, that I don’t want to give it up! I used to run shalk (ult battery) or vampire (8% damage reduction) for his heavy set. As for innate axiom, I run almost entirely class skills on him so it makes sense... and gives him a bit more stamina when he tanks (he is not my main tank though).
I couldn’t presume to tell you abut best-in-slot for stat whatever, because I don’t care about that. I like making a build that is fun for me and sticks to a character concept. He’s almost there, but still crippled by the lack of a magicka-melee weapon line (he uses dual wield and sword and board, in spite of being magicka). He requires more resource management than most players would like, but it works out if you are mindful since abilities are cheap.

That’s actually more so what I was looking for when I originally made this toon (dual wielding while being mag) but I got confused trying to put sets together lol. So I figured I’d take some time to learn more about DKs and see their “full potential” then go back and try again
Siroria is OK if you don't have to move alot, but I think elf bane, bsw, and zaan monster set work very well together in more situations than siroria. Just my opinion.

Name a fight where you have to move in such an extreme amount that you cannot get at least 50% uptime with the amount of leigh way the set gives you with its timers (new circle every 10 seconds, stacks aren't lost for a whole 5 seconds outside of the circle)
