When people bring up the idea of Spellcrafting, what does it mean to you? How would it work?

I constantly keep reading posts mentioning Spellcrafting, but nobody ever truly explains what is their personal vision of this system. I'm pretty sure nearly everyone has a different idea and different expectation and this is where I want to ask what do you all think it should be and how would it be balanced.

I personally don’t like the idea and I was gonna jump on this thread to say something snarky... but as I was thinking about something sarcastic to spit out, I had an idea that I actually liked: you can craft a “spell” that mimics another classes skill. You wouldn’t be able to get the benefits of that class’s skillline passives, but you could cast it with an otherwise equivalent tooltip. Prolly a dumb idea, but whatevs.

That is not at all what I am asking though :). I'd like to know how people imagine it's functionality directly.

What are the functions, what are the possibilities, what parts of a spell would it affect and how, what are the limitations, what are the effects we can use etc.

Like a spell simulacrum? Sort of put up a spellshield that will consume the spell for yourself to use back at the attacker? That sounds like a fantastic idea.

to me itd be a massive issue and would cause even worse balance issues than what weve got right now there wouldnt be much of a way to balance this.

I don't think it makes sense to go into even more detail or even start doing some math, because in the end its ZOS who decide what they want to see in their game and how the numbers work. But Spellcrafting in the classical sense, where you create your own abilities, would likely require an overwork of the entire class and ability system or the game itself (if you want to include levitation or water breathing). Which is highly unlikely if you ask me.

Do it like Oblivion did and you got your spellcrafting.

Want to hit for 50.000 damage and spend your mana in 10 sec long cast? It can be DONE!!!!

i think it would work like the the weapon/armor crafting stations...

1st you pick a spell type = ...damage! ---> passives could unlock more types
then a type = over time ---> passives could unlock more types
then an element type of thing = ice ---> passives could unlock more types and quantity...like i could have a spell with all the elements
then stuff like @Syncronaut said like channelling, etc to add damage. ---> passives could unlock more types
then (the possibilities could be endless) scales off of "magicka or spell dam" ---> passives could unlock more options
    etc.

Locked behind a DLC or expansion.
A huge grind to get mats you will need to craft even a simple spell.
Relies on RNG to actually work.
Will get nerfed eventually to the point where no one will use it.

Cynical, maybe, but based on experience. :)

I wonder...could spells be sold as tomes or scrolls, just like gear can be?

I'd love to be able to craft my own spammable. To me most of the choices are lackluster.

Something like @generalmyrick mentioned is how I would see it happening too
