I'll take it. Win for ESO!
I am currently worried for the future of ESO. Population seems like it is in free fall and the cancellation of the North America in-person gathering feels very much like pulling the plug. Kudos on fixing the in-game economy though. Clearly whatever gold shenanigans were happening the last couple years are fixed.

Thought others might find this interesting. According to this: https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2018/07/steam-data-leak-reveals-precise-player-count-for-thousands-of-games/ Skyrim has sold 13,235,488 copies through Steam.

Ah so it is! Thank you for the correction. I was wondering how they got the numbers for ESO since it doesn't have achievements and now I know why lol. In my haste I didn't even see the skyrim part. Tbh I expected those numbers to be higher for Skyrim.

I wonder if that leaked data, plus the 2017 and 2018 top sellers list from my OP, could be used to estimate how many copies of ESO have been sold on Steam. I am thinking that a game similar to ESO, not recently released, and in the same "Gold" zone as ESO, might also have similar sales numbers.

It should be top 25, ESO is an amazing game and beats the stuffing out of any other mmo out now. ZOS is incompetent and potential buyers need to be aware of that, but it still managed to grow into something great despite the neglectful parents

ESO probably has some of the best game developers in the industry right now. Is the game perfect? No. Have they made some mistakes? Yes. Do they have work to do? Yes. Still, they are well above par, by my book. I'd love to see the game they could make if they were unleashed.

I would not call ZOS (the Studio) "incompetent" or "neglectful", but I am far less impressed with the people who run the studio than I am with the people who actually spend all day making the game.

Edit: Oops. Also, the forum staff is top notch.

Nice joke. Have you ever looked at pvp in console?

ESO is much larger than PVP on console, and a whole bunch of people made all the other parts of the game.

The thing is that communication is easy. It takes time, but it is easy. All they have to do is hire someone to do it. I thought that this is what they had in mind when they hired The Three Amigos ( ) as Community Reps. It sounded like we would be seeing them in the forum, but for all I can tell, one or two of them may have left ZOS already.

As for performance, my future self wishes that they had been able to address that before the finally shut down the game servers. This has been going on long enough that I have to wonder whether the overall performance is at a place where they are now comfortable. Not this recent stuff since the launch of Summerset, but the long term lag and performance issues that they set out on an adventure to conquer two years ago. The Fellowship of the Lag. I suspect they either returned in defeat, declared it a success, and had a party... or they never returned and are now working for other studios.

These are really two areas where the studio has fallen flat on its face. A third area is quality control. Honestly, all three of them are critical enough that ZOS is on my "do not buy" list for future games. I have zero confidence that ZOS can correct them, and I really don't want to buy into a new game from them knowing that these problems will just carry forward, along with a host of new ones.

But, as you said, the PVE story has been great, and I would like to add to that some of the zone construction, music, sound, animation... etc.

    ESO gets an A+
    ZOS gets an F

Can’t really separate the two though. It’s like a great soccer player that’s an atrocity of a human being. Eventually it all bleeds together.

Yes, you can separate the two. Look at what happened to Elder Scrolls Legends.

There is no way you can logically give a game an A+ but the developer, who is solely responsible for the content, design, development and implementation of that game gets an F.

Bugs have become a forefront issue for many the past few weeks, I get that. Doesn't mean the developers gets an F for their product.

Would you prefer EA take over development the game? What grade would you give them?

I am guessing the people ripping ZOS haven't played many other MMOs, as most of their reasoning for slamming them is either clueless rage or selfish complaints. Probably folks from the Snowflake/Outrage generation.

Nice to see ESO and TES make the list. As others have noted, Steam isn't a great place for MMOs so to make this list two years in a row is a good sign of the health of the game's player base numbers. Having both the FTP and subscription options puts this game in a good position for continued growth.

ESO is getting a "Mixed" rating on Steam not because the game is bad, but because Steam people can't connect to the game. A fair complaint, but not reflective of the whole game.

People rag on critic and professional reviews all the time but they are still much better than going by most player reviews. Players have a nasty habit of giving extremely poor reviews whenever they run into a bug or situation that doesn't allow the Dopamine to flow freely, for example giving ESO a thumbs down because of Steam login problems.

lol u obviously havent gotten to end game pvp or pve- where performance matters. sure i thought the game was top notch walking around questing and so on- but when u try to get to leaderboards or competitive play- the games performance , and balance- are a joke.

This is why I generally ignore metacritic, Steam stats etc. and just go watch someone play some of the game or read multiple reviews from various sources.

Sadly we've gone from games reviewers who won't say anything bad because they're scared of losing exclusive access to whiny players who vote bomb to show their frustrations. :disappointed:

The latter are often single issue people, too. I get that. I can fall into that trap, as well. It can be frustrating, but the current Steam drama is a problem with ZOS and Valve, not with ESO. I can easily separate the two, but Steam has no way to do that with reviews.

It's a shame that the Steam Version DESERVES so many negative reviews. You pay full price for extra issues, they really ought to be ashamed of selling that when you can't unlink your account from steam.

I wouldn't agree that this game has the best game devs lol. The lack of communication and the seemingly lack of ability to fix bugs (how many times have they said stuff was fixed and it was still broken?).

Also, I've never seen a company anger so many players through their balancing. Most competitive games I see people are excited to see balance changes, but in ESO lots of players end up being disappointed.

I am glad to see the game growing, I just wish ZOS would put as much effort into their long-term players as they do the new ones.
