You mean the crates where we get... lots of poitions, poisons, food, xp scrolls, repair kits ...
For me it's the same as the crates they sometimes offer during weekend events, but now it's (almost) everyday, and still free, that's fine.
There is a difference, though. Crate trash can be converted to gems.

Did I miss something? What's with the grumpy fest on the free stuff?

AP, Gold, Tel Var - Gold, I can use, but don't need. The other two just go into the bank and sit.
XP Scrolls - Part of the problem that I have with ESO is that character progression happens too quickly. Bonus XP events are usually good enough for me.
Soul gems - I've never had a problem keeping fully stocked with the in-game soul gems
Crown repair kits- I concede that these are probably the most useful thing in the crown store, not for the cost, but the convenience. Now, I never need to buy one!
Tri-pots, Food, Drinks- I have been using crafted food, drink, and potions all this time and have in-game characters that do this. I really don't need the Crown versions. I still have leftovers I didn't eat from Starter Packs. These things don't stack, well, by the way.
Pets - I really like them. I like the pets, and this is the main reason I play "daily rewards" here at ESO. Once I get them, I tend to lose interest.
Crates - I never even claimed the last crates from June. I have a hundred unopened Crown Crates. I don't need any more.
This is just ZOS trying to tell people that they cannot play the game without the helpful Crown Store stuff.

Well, judging by this look into your thinking, I'm thinking the system isn't targeted at you. Honestly, I can't think of anything they could give for a daily reward system that would be for you. (And that's fine, not everything works for every person. Different interests & all that. Kind of like every mention they make of pvp or trials just flies right by me.)
(curious, though - any particular reason you don't open the 'free' crates? Protest of principle against lootcrates?)

Hmm. While I would say that it's at least partially an advertisement for the Wonderful Things You Could Buy, I don't see it as 'telling people they can't play without it".
Honestly, seeing how minor the Crown Store things are is a wonderful demonstration that they're a waste of Crowns. But, then, I see most "try this free crate! get hooked!" offers that way - "Thanks for the free Crown Crate/Fallout Shelter lunchbox/whatever.... opening it showed me how disappointing they are, so I'll be sure not to bother buying any. But I'll happily take any more free ones you send my way!"

For myself i don't give a rats ass about these stuff. I rather have hem fixing the performance issues and gamebreaking issues.
The only reason I accept the rewards is that if I don't take them, the notification sound will chime every single time I change zones, which gets annoying real quick.
Why can't this idiotic system have an option to allow us to dismiss the notification.
I'm an ESO+ member. Giving me a daily reward is like giving a hooker herpes.
Just because it's free doesn't mean it's welcome.
