Well by now you've been bombarded with the same answers over and over so I'll move on to your last query, how to make gold.

I use a variety of methods which include stealing and fencing, the terrible trading system and daily writs. Depending on the player, the trading system is the more lucrative money maker, but stealing is the most fun for me. Playing the market can net you quick and large sums of gold if you are selling what players want, easily hundreds of thousands.

I usually net around 25k per 30-40 minutes of stealing, but it is limited by how many items you can fence per day. I have at least 20 toons I actively play with so I still bring in a nice chunk of gold. Daily crafting writs brings in 4k per toon(would be slightly more if I did the jewelry one) so that adds up too.

Not much these days. Usually its to bribe people to give me BOP drops when in dungeons or trials. I am pretty self sufficient otherwise. The mortgage is paid, the bags/bank/horses are all maxed, and unless they double the size of my house's inventory, I got no more room for furniture.

I still do writs for mats, but honestly, I think my bank account will outlast my days in Tamriel, even if I never made another cent.

How anyone could have any money in this game is beyond me (if he doesnt have the time to do the farming. Which pretty much no one over 30 has :) )

25 minutes a day doing crafting writs, and you will never want for a gold mat again. I just did some pretty heavy inventory cleaning. I have around 300 gold items in storage chests, and at least 12/15 of my tunes are in gold gear, and most of them have more than one set on them. I have NEVER bought a gold mat in my over 4 years in this game. I have between 6-800 of every gold mat, just sitting in the bank, save wax, that I use a lot, but I have at least a stack of that. Writs, writs, writs!

My biggest expenses have probably been (not actually sure of order):

    1. Bag upgrades (15 characters)
    2. Gold rings
    3. Buying rings at Summerset launch to flip on guild store
    4. Repairs
    5. Horseriding (15 characters)
    6. Other gear

I use it here in there for materials, but nothing is terribly expensive so far. For people further along in the game, what do you tend to spend money on? What do you save up for? What is worth it? How does your personal economy work?

As I said, I know you can farm everything and dont have to buy it. But, since my time is very limited, I much rather actually play the game than farm mats or run around billboards and vendors doing Writs. I tried it, it quite literally cost me most of my playtime (which is about 20 minutes to half an hour a day).

Upgrading sets is a waste IMO for little return. Only Monster sets and Weapons get the Gold treatment. Housing and motifs is the only thing I spend gold on and sometimes a specific item. Transmuting saved me alot of good as well.

The word "wast" in the same post as "housing" is really hilarious in that context. I couldnt help it but smile :)

I never said the word "wast" but ok.

You literally said that upgrading armor is a waste, and one sentence later that your buying stuff for your house, which is the climax of wasting money in an mmo.

Was it worth it? I noticed that the rewards for doing tier 5 jewelry writs aren't much better than tier 1, and the latter are almost self sustaining. I've been doing them for 2 weeks on 14 characters, 1 high 13 low, and only consumed about 40-50 pewrter since the cost is almost fully refunded by pewter jewels to deconstruct and pewter ounces given whenever a writ is not rewarded.

Each time I decide to spend on anything I first ask myself if I'll recoup the investment, even more so it it's about alts. That's why I scarcely learned any motifs save the dirt cheap ones, but researched clothier, woodworker and blacksmith traits on 5 of my alts. Nevertheless this ensured a steady flow of master writs. I doubt that investing a few more millions per character would have been worth it, since the drop rate on my character that knows all of them, and characters that know less than 20 is at most 10%. Since I get about 200 vouchers per crafter per month on average, that would only be something like 20 extra vouchers. With a voucher price of 500 gold, that would only be 10K worth of vouchers per month per character. Learning all motifs cost 8-10M. Thus it will take me about 1000 months, or about 80 years IRL to break even; in fact I will never break even since motifs are being added in game.

Now let's compare with jewelry crafting. Considering you spent about 1.1M per character to power level them from 1 to 50, and recouped maybe ~200K in materials, and I'm being generous here, since prices have been dropping rapidly for those, that still leaves a residual cost of about 900K. Will you recoup those 900K in a year, or less for those characters, versus the situation where you would have leveled them slowly, by deconstructing whatever happens to drop? By this method it has taken me about 2 weeks for my first character, and slightly more for my 2nd since I only deconstructed white, green and blue, saving the purple and gold ones for the first one, that had all the passives, so I got a bit less inspiration. Considering 3 weeks, give or take, it will take me 35 weeks, or slightly under 9 months to do the other 12 characters. So in fact it's not even a year, but less.

I can do writs on 10 toons in about the time of a normal sitcom/sports center, which I have in the background. I hear ya, I work 50-60 hours a week. That is why I am such a fan of writs because they are efficient and always there. Some days I do 10, other days I do 2-3 other days I dont do any. I mean if you really only have 20 minutes a day to play, I dont know what to tell you. You typically cant even queue into groupfinder of Cyrodiil that fast in prime time. If you are looking for arguably one of the best bangs for your buck in terms of time, writs are the answer.

Still working horsemanship up on most toons. Of my two accounts, I have .... lemme think .... exactly two characters that have finished all the riding lessons.

Only one account is maxed bank space

Nobody is maxed on bag space

I like some weird furnishings and paid way too much for them

Bought the brown horse (back before leveling goodies)

Probably motifs is the biggest expense, I think
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

Let's see... all horses bought. All bags updated on all chars except one but it's not even a mule so why bother for now. Bank upgraded. All traits on one character except for the new jewelry ones but I'm in no rush. Most motifs learned and not by buying them, mostly pure farm.

All houses in my alliance bought. Now I'm working on getting all furnishing plans for the three races of said alliance because I can. Next up.... who knows. Will probably do the same for the next alliance.

I never complained, its all good, I like that you can buy upgrademats with gold.
Oh, and in Loading Screen Online, 2-3 minutes is the time you need to relogg.
I timed it, with 2 chars, logging, running around taking the writs, getting to the craftingstations and delivering the writs takes about 20 minutes (with Dulgons Lazy Writ Crafter). not factoring in the time it takes to buy raw mats if you run out, plus the additional relogg because the Mail still doesnt work properly.

Again, not complaining, I get why it takes this time. I just dont have it.

But, with 18, I could do things like 8 hours of gaming in one sitting. Now, with 37, I am happy to make it through half an hour of uninterrupted gaming :)
