Buying Glyphs, Improvement Mats, and Motif Chapters from Guild Traders.

I find it funny there are people with millions of gold with nothing to do with it, while im here struggling to keep it in the bank.

Housing gets expensive. Not only are the largest houses over a million gold, but then there’s the furnishings and/or patterns if you craft your own.

That and motifs are the two most costly endeavors of the game, but neither has anything to do with gameplay. Once your basic needs are covered (gear, potions, food, repairs, bag space, training) or you farm them yourself, gold is just for fun and vanity!

Also... There is the new gifting system to think about. Would you rather spend 3k crowns or a million gold to get that shiny new mount in the store?

I've saved the most I've ever had recently. That's with continuing to buy poisons and potions for my main. But now I'm spending it all on motifs! :) I realised I can obtain the Master Crafter achievement. Right now I need to complete only 6 more books. It's going to cost a lot, but I realised that I'm not using the gold for anything at all really, so why not this?

Mostly motifs and furnishings. Donations to guilds for traders.

It's very easy to get a lot of stuff yourself in the game, so you have the option of doing that, or buying stuff instead if getting it involves an activity you don't like.

For motifs, I try to get most of them myself, but towards the end, when you are getting mostly doubles, I go look for reasonably priced ones.

Furnishings from the luxury vendor can add up quickly. As can monster pieces from the golden.

A lot of theory crafters buy a ton of gold improvers to try out different gear combinations. Raiders and PvPers will buy a lot of potions and poisons.

There's definitely a lot to spend gold on. Or not. That's the beauty of it.

I "retired" my magSorc from being my main, instead giving the title to my stamBlade.

In 6 months, this character has researched more weapons and armor than my sorc of 2 years. Currently researching Nirnhoned weapons and armor, which each cost 10k (I don't have enough mats to give people to craft them, so I have to buy them).

I still have a few more to buy (though I did reach out to a seller who crafted all the remaining items I needed for 1k gold discount per - that was nice).

But the real money sink: motifs.

Unlike most, I don't rush out to "complete" sets. Not only do I not have the time to run around trying to make complete sets, but I also don't have enough gold.

So I focus on motifs I need, which are usually from legendary writs. I won't buy a motif asking for a legendary set of ancient silk gloves in Redoran for 56 writs (what a {#%%$&%} insult), but for those in which the value is 200+ writs.

If I'm going to waste mats in this game, the trade off has to be worth it.

This game has one of the worst grind-to-payout systems I've ever seen. 1000+ refinements and one can't even get enough mats to fully upgrade a single item.

Imagine how ridiculous this is when trying to level up 7 pieces of armor.

Sometimes, I wonder why I still play this game and writing it down like this... disturbs me.

I am currently saving up money for the Ald Velothi Harbor House and for furnising mats it. Besides that I always use a lot of money for alts (crafting, bag space), riding training. And from time to time motifs.

At the moment I spend most of my gold on bank and bag upgrades. I finally got my crafter the full 200 bag slots so now I'm focusing on maxing out the bank. I'm not sure yet how many bag slots I'm going to get my other characters. They only carry around 15-20 items to use and I don't mind going back to town periodically to empty their inventory, so I don't think I'll need all 200 slots on each of them.

I also want to buy the last of the horses (no I don't need it, but I like having lots of options for mounts) and I've bought a few small/medium houses which I need to finish decorating.

I've not really started buying motifs, I've been hoping to find as many as I can first, but I'm sure I'll start doing that at some point. (I really want the glass robe for my sorcerer so that will probably be 1st on the list.)

I quite like that you don't really need lots of gold in ESO. You can get perfectly good equipment without it so you don't have to spend lots of time farming gold, but there's a lot of things you can buy with it if you want to.

To me the biggest expenses so far have been motifs & furnishing plans, followed by refined materials I use for crafting writs. I'm not yet into housing, since I kept it out until I had a sufficient reserve and a regular high inflow needed to finance it without significant extra effort. I'm generating more upgrade materials than I'm using for upgrading my gear and doing master writs, so I didn't have to buy those. Also since I've started playing I've been earning far more than I've spent. For the first 6 months everything was eaten up by the bank and character inventory upgrades for my first 4, but after that, things have constantly accelerated.

Gold directly translates to game time (that you don't want to spend).

You can farm mats/gear, or you can farm gold. It gives you a choice that way.

Expense? Gear upgrades, potions, motifs, housing. Choose your vice.
Just because you don't like the way something is doesn't necessarily make it wrong...

Until recently, I spent most of my gold on my crafter in a vain attempt to keep him maxed out as far as possible - motifs, recipes and patterns - that's a serious gold sink.

And they just keep adding them - almost like being on a treadmill lol.

I have got my act together and started decorating my Ebonheart Chateau - I'm about 1 million gold in on furnishings and I'm really just getting started - that will cost PLENTY in the end.

I buy flowers by the stack because I don't like farming mats and my main runs on spell power pots - but that expense is nothing compared to the above.

I can't remember when I last bought any other mats. With writs, hirelings and occasional refining, I find I always have more than I will ever need in my craft bag.
