When is it safe to do veteran dungeons?

I'd say at least cp300 for DLC Vet and 160 for base game vet. That being said it's up to much more than that. You need to know what you're doing, and that's the most important part. I'm not even talking about knowing mechanics, because you can always figure those out. I'm talking about with your class. For base game vets, you can complete dungeons with 12-15k DPS but it's obviously not optimal. For vet DLC, you want a minimum of 15k DPS. The content can usually be completed at that level especially if the tank and healer are on point, though you guys will probably take a bit longer.

If you're DPS and you queue a random vet and you're parsing less than 10k, it's a problem. You can find people willing to help you improve at everything you do. Have an idea of how your class and build is supposed to work before going into vet - That's the most important part.

I used to hate when people filtered out players with lower DPS in vet dungeons, until I played with a friend (running a stamblade) only hitting 8-9k. I made up for it, but after the dungeon was over I pulled him aside and went over what we could do to improve his character and rotation so that he can actually run this content.

Well, let me share a story...

Few days ago, I finally hit 50 on my first character. I normally do at least two random dungs a day for the extra XP and gear - so I decided to do just that to get my CP up. What I didn't realize was that once you hit 50, the group finder tool changes the default behavior from "random normal" to "random veteran". Unaware, I queued and entered the dung. The run went fine, I was pleasantly surprised that now I actually have to do some healing. I attributed it to the post-50 scaling system and queued again to try my luck at getting into the second pledge dung.

This time around, the run was smooth all the way to the last boss. There, someone activated the HM scroll and that's when things got nasty. The fight lasted forever and there was a LOT of red pools dropping around that killed me in like two seconds should I not dodge immediately - in a room full of debris that blocks your dodge rolls. I never experienced difficulty like that in ESO before so I was kinda confused. It turned out that people didn't kill orbs healing the boss - once the leader explained, we killed it quite easily. When I got back to collect my key, I was shocked to see the NPC offering two of them as reward! That's when the realization finally hit me...

Truth to be told, I can't even run normal dungs after this experience, because they're boring AF. I didn't have any difficulty staying alive or keeping people up in the vet dungeon so I think I'll just continue queuing for those. I haven't had anyone commenting on my low CP (~20 at the time) or mix&match crappy gear, but I'm sure part of it is that I was put together with a strong group that just didn't care. Reading through this thread, I think that the game is way more relaxed than the forums suggest. You can probably queue for vets straight from CP 1, although it might be a good idea to go for the "1" version of dungs first as people have suggested - at least that's what I plan on doing...

Start them as soon as you hit cp160

Just make sure you have decent armour, enchants, weapons + food and you should be good to go.

I would aim to complete all of the standard (version 1) vet dungeons before you hit cp220
Then all the version 2 vet dungeons before you hit cp300
Once you hit cp300 you'll start getting grouped into the DLC dungeons also.

Also, if it's your 1st time in the dungeon, make sure to say so.
Then at least the others will know to wait for you to do the quests etc, and should *hopefully explain any vital tactics on the go.

healing you can start whenever, dps you can start once close to 20k, tank can start whenever as well. The key is go in knowing mechanics and your role, especially if the mechanics are less forgivable.

When you know mechanics. It's the most important of all, even an easy dungeon can be difficult if you know nothing about what to expect from the bosses.
Read something about the place before entering and it will be way easier for you and your group.
