    Aren't we following the "Don't ask, don't tell"policy?

    I'm pretty sure we were.

I don't believe its against the ToS but whoever gets scammed in the end won't have any compensation imo.

It is using a system Zos put in place and I expect they had clear knowledge that a transaction like this can occur.

I see nothing wrong with that as long as nobody is getting scammed. Simple currency exchange.

It IS against the terms of service. More importantly, it can be tracked easily so i don't see why anyone would do it. The menu shows in the crown store has a specific tab for sent / received / returned gifts. So if they are all accompanied by a "special thank you mail" with some gold attached.... well it doesn't take a genius to figure it out.

Stuff like this is unwanted by devs, because it is an uncontrollable gold sink and can create unwanted player behavior, like bot-farming, which then again ruins the experience of regular players. So TOS is excluding this from allowed exchanges by a very good reason. So we actually should care, even it is "just" crown store items, which can be exchanged by this.

It's not against the ToS, or the EULA, or the Code of Conduct.

    It's not against any rules.

ZOS has remained competely silent with regards to this, even though there have been multiple threads asking for clarification.

What did you expect? Gifting system is usually the trademark of low quality, p2w mmos. It basically supports in-game gold selling nicely.

So a guy with to much gold wants a item that cost real $.

Its not realy a goldselling, but i can see issues of sellers creating accounts to scam people of crowns (giving them 0 gold).
After they get the crown store items, they simply sell those accounts for real money to higest bidder (they probaly only buy limited time items).

I'm going to stick my neck out and ask would it really be so bad if ZOS officially supported this? With safeguards against scamming, of course.

There are always going to be players with more time (to grind in-game currency) and players with more RL money (to buy cash shop currency), and EVE seems to do alright with a system not unlike this.

So what if Joe Moneybags sells a Crown Store outfit to Jane Student for gold? Most BIS gear is from trials and vet dungeons, and is already bind on pickup, so it's not as if Joe can run out and buy himself a full set for zero effort. And ZOS already got the $$$ for the Crowns, so they aren't missing out on money Jane could never have afforded in the first place.

I thought it would be available until the launch of consoles.

I have all the ESO+ crowns and I intend to use them as currency so that way someone can update a mod that I want.

I knew this was going to be an issue the moment I heard about the gifting system.

I have - however - decided to report one of these people in-game (they were also spamming), asking ZoS whether or not this is against the TOS. I know I'll never get an answer back by reporting, but I do feel that they need to make a clear and official statement regarding this. In a nutshell it is gold selling, just in a different format -- will be interesting to see where this goes.

I just hope they address this sooner than they did the gold selling craze (still get PTSD thinking about the early day zone chats being spammed with various links and whatnot).

Until they clarify, it looks like they absolutely do want the crowns to be purchased, but they also retain the right to blame the players when it doesn't work out.

I'm going to say that yes, it would be very bad, for a number of reasons:

    1. It detracts from the whole point of "gifting", which is to give something to someone without expecting something in return, ie, as a birthday gift.
    2. It would create inflation in game. There is a lot of gold just sitting in people's banks because they don't need to use it. There are also a lot of crowns out there from people who subscribe but don't feel like they need the latest mount. If you are now putting all this in circulation, there is going to be a lot of inflation in the game.
    3. It will attach a real money price to in-game items and that will go up. Just look at GW2, where you can trade gold to gems. Legendary items in the store go for the equivalent of $150-160. And there are some enchants that go for four times that amount.
    4. It ignores an entire section of the ESO economy and leaves it unprotected, which is the offering of services rather than goods. I'm talking about Skyreach carries, vet dungeon achievement runs and skin runs, which are things people now exchange for gold. These people would still be subject to being scammed and there is no way ZOS can protect them from it.

And that's just off the top of my head.

Not sure if it's against the ToS or not, and I think ZOS needs to provide clarification on this. I don't recall seeing any official response from ZOS in any of the threads on this topic on PTS.

But...ZOS is the one benefitting from this, as Player X will buy crowns (money to ZOS) to buy whatever CS item to give to Player Y. It seems that ZOS wins in this instance of gold selling.

But, there are also few safeguards, so people can get scammed, and I'm certain that is not something ZOS wants to happen.

There are some pre-requisites to being able to give/receive items, so just creating an account to scam people is harder to do, so if someone gets scammed it would likely be from some unscrupulous player rather than someone trying to build up an account with CS items in order to sell. Plus, right now, you can't gift houses, which are most of the large-ticket items. And, I'm assuming Limited-Time offers would be off the table as well, though I don't recall seeing anything about that. Just houses and "instant" items such as werewolf bites.

Since crown stuff is mostly cosmetic or convenience (I can't think of anything pay to win so far), there should be an official gold crown exchange inside the game. Many legit games have it.

The crowns can't be transferred, right? I thought only items could be gifted. Not a big deal at all. Everything stays within the game. Sure, people can now buy crowns to buy in game gold through this indirect means, but it is better than money going to third parties with their damn bots.
