Developers can't win. If they produce content that can't be finished in a couple of hours they're accused of money-grabbing by forcing a grind on players, if they produce content that can be finished in a couple of hours they're accused of money-grabbing by forcing you to buy something with little content in it.

It's actually worse than that. You can spend months, or even years, putting together content, only to have players clearing it in less than 10 hours, and looking for more.

I mean, remember when we were told it takes the team about a year to put together a trial, and Hodor's already got a Vet Cloudrest +3 clear. It lasted about a month. The content itself takes less than an hour.

There are ways to cheese around this. Developers can procedurally generate additional content, but players are usually fairly savvy when that's happening. (Though, I'll always have a soft spot for the gibbering insanity that Star Trek Online managed to generate through poorly moderated ProcGen.)

Most of the time, you actually need to generate new content for yourself. I mean, there are ways to speed things up. Stuff like snapping brushes together to quickly generate a map, but again, players tend to notice. So, you can create content by hand, and it's time consuming and expensive, or you can cut corners, and everyone wonders why every tavern looks suspiciously similar.

It's surely not a day job. Ha ha. It doesn't pay you salary so you can pay your bill, rent, mortgage or buy food and feed your doggies and kitties. It's a video game. It's entertainment. Grind, don't grind.. play how you want.

It’s not. Take your time. Do a wide variety of things. Stop “working” on things. Play. That’s what it’s for.

If you're looking for an endgame that you can complete in days or weeks, then this is not the game for you, to be completely honest. I've been playing for a year and a half and am still happy to log in every day to do the stuff I'm in the mood to do. And I'm glad that six months from now I know that I will still have things to do.

ESO is less of a grind than other MMO's I've played (which is, sadly, most...).

Gear grinds? There is no other MMO that is as friendly with gear as ESO, at least, not one that isn't stagnant. Every time a new big update lands in WoW, I have to go grind new gear. Unless you follow the meta religiously, or you're part of the top 2%, you rarely ever have to change out your gear sets in ESO. Even then, you can bank what you changed out and re-equip it when the meta changes back to it.

Faction grinds? Oh lord. You can complete the Mage's Guild in a day of running around zones, even less time if you have friends or guild mates you can port to. Fighter's Guild can be ground out in 2-3 hours if you have any idea of what you're doing and where to go. Thieve's Guild and Dark Brotherhood? Ok, those are tedious, but can be done in 2-3 days. Psijic Order? 6 hours. I've no idea how long Undaunted takes, since I didn't pay attention to it.

WoW's factions? You're looking at months there. The majority of the newer ones can only be completed with daily quests, and you get 2-3 of those, maybe. EverQuest 1&2? Most of those took months, too. A few could be ground out on monsters, like the Fighters Guild, but not most.

Crafting? Jewelcrafting is now the only crafting skill in ESO that takes any effort. The rest can be completed in an hour, if you count the amount of time it takes to buy up stuff from guild stores. It won't take long for Jewelcrafting to be that easy, either. You're all underestimating that amount of people who will be flooding the guild traders with materials, hoping to make mad gold off of a new release. The nodes might be rare, but with the amount of players and the amount of guild stores, it won't be that rare for very long. Add to that that you can purchase jewelry from regular vendors to deconstruct and... yeah.

The only part of jewelcraftings grind will be getting the materials to gold out all three pieces. The only people who "need" gold jewelry are the top 2%. How long have players gotten along just fine with purple jewelry? Or with their current sets? Oh, right. For as long as the game has existed.

    About jewelry crafting?

You know the funny thing? The actual XP costs to level are the same for jewelry crafting as the other six crafting lines. As in, exactly the same.

I think people are forgetting how long it took them to max out the basic craft lines back at launch.

I don't know a single mmorpg I have ever played that didn't try to make their games a task in its own way. Eso is no exception to this rule at all. Although I won't lie it does make it far less boring as there is much more variety in it.

Actually thought this would be another 'auction house' thread, because of how insane it is to have to search through every vendor, taking hours out of playtime. But, no, it's about the grind in the game being too difficult? Eh? How? Enchanting was the worst grind, and it was pretty easy actually (and I got to 50 before they made it easier). I sneeze and gain 10 levels. How is this game a dayjob if you aren't talking about trying to farm motifs from the guild vendors or something?

some people don’t actually understand the grind behind Jewelry crafting. The 1-50 is not being argued. That part is fine. Transmuting and researching is fine.

What’s not fine is creating and upgrading jewelry, the supposed main function of a craft line. It takes 10x the mats to make a single white tier items (via 1/10th portions dropped for traits), and 10x the materials to upgrade that ring (via 1/10 portion upgrade grains)

A game is only what you put into it. You don't need everything "NOW". Stop acting like that and it wont seem like a day job. Pretty simple.

I haven't bought the expanion, so i can't say how long these things take. But people seem to be in a rush to get to the end. And then complain there is nothing to do. Enjoy the trip there. It can be annoying with alof of grind to get things. And it is a hard one, because if it is to fast to do, people will complain it is over to fast, and they have nothing to do

Here I am waiting for the SI download to finish, just got off work, now that's a real grindy day job. Games are piece of cake compare to my job. I play ESO to relax. It doesn't bother me that somethings take longer, there's always other things to do. Even though I haven't try Jewelry crafting, I can tell you I'm gonna love it because everyone will be starting from a more or less level playing field which means more opportunity for me to get ahead. With the other crafts, the vets are already established.

Everybody's talking about the grind to level Jewelry crafting here, but the biggest point of concern according to the PTS threads is that upgrading takes 10x the amount of mats.

I don't care that it takes a long time to level a skill, I care that it takes an estimated 100+ hours of farming to craft a single set of gold jewelry.

@Menelaos Back when there were three different rune node colors, one for each type of rune?

    Most definitely.

Back on When VR1 zones would hand you your ass, and next VR rank started at a million and change and only went up from there.

    Five hours is a cakewalk.

@Uviryth the trick is progression. Finding a fine line between not having something be sedated-faceroll easy (all things 'normal') and frustrating the player(s) to the point where they just stop.

Sadly, there are three 'difficulty' levels in this game, four if you factor in DLC'ness, to an extent. There's norm, Vet, and Vet HM. Once you insert CP's into the mix, the spread becomes even wider.

Make things too hard, some can't access content and complain accordingly. Make things too easy, and the advanced players are bored out of their minds.

Leveled. Friggin'. Zones. This allowed them to have a larger spread, and gave players of all levels a choice. Why they took these away with 1T, I'll never fully understand.

I do not envy the Devs in that regard. Since they won't implement a difficulty slider, how do you provide content to cover the gambit of players that are out there with only three possibilities?

So, yes, there are adults playing this game, and some of them still want a challenge, want to be able to figure things out and make steps towards progress.

Ask yourself this, do you get better each time you step into content X? (Maybe not immediately, but when you step away for a bit and come back?)

I've logged thousands of hours and deconned more stuff than some will ever acquire, and I'm still learning little tips, tricks, and methods on content I've run just as many times.

It's hard to provide for everyone. Kudos to the Devs when they do try.

Are you talking about the trait items specifically? Because the dust is combined into 10 ounces. At least that's what I've been finding.

By the time I get to 50, I'm sure I will have enough mats to both trait AND upgrade whatever I want to upgrade.

Just like the other crafts were when I first started.

I remember when I hit Vet 1 and I made myself my first gold weapon. It was so special. People were not swimming in gold mats back then.

I've been having a reasonable time getting jewelry crafting mats, so I'm sure I'll end up with as many stacks of the stuff as I do have Rubedo Leather, Ancestor Silk, Ruby Ash and Rubedite Ore, along with all the improvers.

It's just going to take longer than a week to reach that point.

@starkerealm It’s not the leveling to 50, it’s that it takes the equivalent of 20 honing stones, 30 dwarven oil, 40 grain solvents, and 80 temps to upgrade one item to gold. Makes the actual jewelry crafting (craftable sets) almost irrelevant with the waste of mats IMO. I know I wouldn’t drop 80 temps to gold one piece of Hundings Rage.

80 gold mats to upgrade a jewerly piece is a lot, but do you really need it? This way you have to think about which set you wanna upgrade.

Also keep in mind if it only took 8 gold mats, who would still buy from the golden? Would you still farm vet trials? Of course some players still like to do trials, but most players do them to get gear.

Zos introduced jewel crafting this way, so that people still run the other content. And you have to think about what you want to gold out.

They may change it in the future when it's less new. Until then enjoy the new grind :)

    MMORPG = Grind

Other MMO's have tried to remove the grind. Those games do not last. Do you want to know why? Because people that play MMO's actually like to grind. When you remove the grind and just give into instant gratification players get bored and quit.

Hurdling and Julianos is the old iron-side sets, they are not optimal but work all the time.
And yes its an I'm rich indicator. Now for group buff sets in trials, gold make more sense, not sure that happen if you have gold ebon and the other tank has mostly blue.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
