My friend wants to start playing eso and he wants to buy only base game to see if he likes it. So I was checking out eso website and it turns out you cant buy base game only, you can only buy morrowind or summerset or both in one. Is this true or am I just an idiot who cant find base game to buy?

Morrowind comes with the base game now, afaik. You cannot buy them separately anymore.

All versions of the game come in Digital (download only) or Physical (disk in case) option. Even if you get physical, a download will be required. Both digital and physical have standard and collectors editions, which come with in game goodies like mounts and pets, and the physical also comes with tangible goodies.

The Summerset package (digital or physical, collectors or standard) includes the base game, and the MorrowInd and upcoming Summerset expansions. I believe I t will also include ESO+ for one month.

For base game only, I would try Game Stop or other retailer for an old (but unused) copy branded either Elder Scrolls Online or One Tamriel.

Edit - any digital content labeled “upgrade” requires you to already own the base game, and adds access to the Summerset and Morrowind expansions.
