Off. It censors way too many things that I'm not offended by at all.
Whisper me - censored.
Farm Troll King helm - censored
If it operated on a George Carlin level of profanity and only removed the most offensive words, I might leave it on, but it's just too much a hassle when it seems to be censoring things that have no business being censored.
Always on because I don't want to read something I can't unread.. Unfortunately, people come up with some pretty disgusting things to say in zone chat sometimes.. I'm glad I don't see it. As far as I'm concerned, I'm not missing a thing.
i don't want to be babied, especially by a computer program. i don't want to participate even passively in censorship. i've been to "scarier" places than a video game and no bad words or ideas transmitted over a screen are going to further damage my psyche. many great ideas are most clearly communicated using language beyond the 1st grade level.
i'm sure there are other reasons, but those 4 came to mind first.
Off. While I do find some language offensive at times, I find it more irritating that the filter blocks words incorrectly.
Seriously, why filter the following:
I **** g**** in the mail for your g**** preserves. <-- with filter
I put a grape in the mail for your grape preserves. <-- without filter

Off but mostly because I sometimes don't catch what an npc says and need to do, did I just hear....? Zone chat is off though unless I need a WB.
As for forums, on and no option to turn off is the best way to go. They can ESRB and say online experience may vary but there can be consequences because websites are a different kettle of fish and standards. It's like trying to use American football rules on a Rugby match. Even though the game is rated M, the website has to follow internet guidelines else it's easier for them to fall into some obscure law about profanity or the like.
Off. I have it off in every game ever since a game (might have been WoW?) censored an RP line talking about "I'm watching my reputation." Reputation got censored due to having a bad Spanish word inside it.
I was a public defender for a long time, I can handle bad words. I really don't like unintelligible legitimate words due to a draconian mindless filter. If the chat around me gets so consistently foul as to discomfit me and the game company won't stop it or even encourages it (hi, ArcheAge), I stop playing that game.
However I have no problem with cuss words if used for proper emphasis and not to be nasty to others. So I don't really need to blind myself to others using them. Not that I encounter them much in ESO anyway, since I don't generally check Zone chat and I don't PvP, those being the two places that seem most prone to producing colorful metaphors.
