Well I actually used the "intimidate" option to tell her that she had no chance against me (since she implied that she was going to kill me herself).

That's when she politely asked me to jump off a cliff. I had no option to refuse... or, as a previous comment suggested, to promptly remove her head from the rest of her body for even suggesting such an idiotic thing.

Why must we always be the "nice" person?

I get asked by a complete stranger to make the "ultimate sacrifice" and kill myself in order to free her and her companions. Where is my option to separate her head from her neck and proceed to do the same to her friends? I want to be the biggest *** bag but this game doesn't let me.

    MY IMMERSION!!!!!!!

I agree. It is jarring to be walking around saving everyone you meet, and then meet a merchant and be offered the option "No - give me all of your gold now!"

On the other hand, I am deliberately creating & leveling a character to do the Dark Brotherhood who doesn't care about anyone and will kill strangers for very little reason, yet he has to do a hundred quests where he helps random folks he meets like a good Samaritan.

That's why for some time now I prefer games like Pillars of Eternity or Baldur's Gate. TES never had a good inviroment for roleplaying gameplay-wise, nevertheless lore is quite interesting and can be a basis for a lot of interesting narratives and hard choices.
I got to say though, that the main quest is written quite well as a few side quests and DLC ones, but the majority of narrative is just plain stupid, even brain-dead. No offence, but ZOS writers should consider to change this sorrowful course. I know, that it's not possible to rewrite old narratives from the scratch, but at least try not to make such mistakes in the future. Clockwork DLC was pretty interesting, by the way. Keep it up at least on its level.

P.S. By the Eight, sometimes I dreaming about Party-based RPG in TES universe. You know, with a lot of lore text, interesting non-2D characters as your companions and dialogs with multiple choices, with real consequences. But guess what? Always after that I just open my eyes to realize, that it'll never happen. Ever. It's too risky, there is no assured profit. What a waste.

i hated Village of the Lost, the very first time I went in.
This was well before 1Tam, when a solo player would be very easily overwhelmed by the mobs in public dungeons and the bosses were even harder to solo (at least for my poor main at the time, when I really didn't know what I was doing. L2P lol.) It became a case of "oh look, another player! I'll follow him!" The portals were just confusing. To this day, I have been in there a total of I think 3 times, on 2 of 10 characters on EU and one of two on NA. Hate it; don't care if I don't get that skill point.

And yes, the ending is quite ridiculous.

I'd imagine you are in the minority when it comes to opinions on the quest writing overall. Nearly every person I've talked to loves and enjoys the quests that ESO offers. Sure there's some that are poorly written but in general there are some great lines and the fact that it's all voice acted makes it 10x more immersive. Those that don't like it generally don't like questing, so who cares if you don't like it if you wouldn't read the majority of the quests anyways. If you do truly enjoy questing though, then I'm sure you enjoy a majority of the quests.

Everyone's got an opinion though so to each their own.

Well when you know you can't die, requests like that aren't crazy at all.

^This. It's touching when random NPCs are like, 'no, you can't kill yourself! You're too important to the Dominion to die!', but extremely frustrating when my goal is to get everyone out alive and I'm immortal. I thought it was nice that we finally ran across some NPCs who took advantage of the fact.

Now, the side quest stupidity I couldn't stand was the Fading Tree quest. Spoilers ahead:
At the end of the quest, you need to help the husband decide whether he should stay behind while his (pregnant) wife and the rest of the village goes off to Bosmer paradise (so the rest of the village will eventually be able to come back) or if he should stay with his wife and strand the village in paradise, never to return to Tamriel.

The painfully obvious third option--which is not actually an option in-game--would be to have the wife stay behind ALSO. But not only can you not choose this option, they don't even bother to hand-wave a reason for why not. :/

About the lack of third options... Do you remember that Bal Foyen quest in which you have to choose between helping at the docks or the fort? Because you can't do both at the same time... Except you're in a game where you can group with a friend, sending one to the North while going yourself to the South... But of course, for reasons, this painfully obvious third option, to quote your words, wasn't available, as in this entire area, you, and not any other player, were the only available person to solve the situation.

I agree. I hate that whole place - how large and confusing it is to get around most of all, but the forced "supreme sacrifice" for a complete stranger ending too.

You might say that you're immortal, so what does it matter? Well I say that you are still capable of feeling fear and pain, and being dashed on the rocks below cannot be pleasant, and not something most people would casually agree to do for a stranger, especially more selfish types of characters.

I would have been cool with an option to refuse and be pushed, or have to fight them, or something. As it is though, using the Intimidate option leads to the same outcome. It is just poor writing disguised as a "difficult decision".

I kinda like the quest. I view it as a somewhat tongue-in-cheek comment on how meaningless death is for the player character in the game (and how that makes themes of danger, sacrifice, etc. utterly meaningless).

It's a leap of faith for a reason.

And it's not as if 'death' has consequence in the game anyway - you don't land and start over at Level 1.

Of course, the option of throwing someone else off in your stead wouldn't have been a bad idea.

I'd say you'd have legitimate complaint if any quest outcome had other than superficial consequences anyway.
Just because you don't like the way something is doesn't necessarily make it wrong...

This is one of those quests which have a "restart the quest or suffer endless gabbing about the choice you make".

You can elect not to sacrifice yourself, and deal with the "bad" ending.

For me, I jump. It's such a splendid view.

Some of the base game quests are pretty meh.
They definitely improved over time with their writing.

The morrowind quests are almost universally good, I feel like they really set up why you have to do the quest much better and why its in your interest. Some of the more inane quests don't take themselves too seriously and are played for laughs.

I do understand a bit of the frustration at getting rail roaded, particularly when the only quest option is to "be nice/comforting/friendly" etc. if I don't feel like my character would do so.... its an RPG after all. Otherwise I appreciate that most quests aren't good/bad dichotomy but mostly judgemental/forgiving dichotomy instead. No one is actually so cartoonishly evil as "evil" normally is in games.

What coincidence, I just completed that public dungeon 10 minutes ago. I just fast clicked through the quest dialogues without reading them. So happy to hear I missed nothing. But such a shame with all the paid voice actors etc. Does anyone actually read them anymore?

If these quests actually contained vital and useful information that'd be awesome. But they never do, it's just pointless filler. And it's almost always so mundane and cliche. With some very few exceptions once in a while, but at some point stopped reading quests, so I may have missed a few good ones zooming past.

I was thinking about the reasons, and I have a feeling it's because of casuality (that a word?) and streamlining. It canø't offend anyone even slightly and everyone has to be able to understand it, even those that has um.. problems understanding things in general. So we just get these mediocre bland pointless casually streamlined snooze fest quests.
