Stewart1874✭✭✭✭✭I'm in favour of hands. As others have said the staves don't look great when you're running or how the character holds them. I cannot recall any use of wands in Oblivion or Skyrim so I'm doubtful they'd be friendly to any part of the story. I don't really mind though, having an alternative to staves would be nice

Like I outlined in my discussion about weapon ideas, I would love to see spell foci as alternate magic weapon. And then... perhaps an one-handed and magic skill line as well, where they could have both wands and runestones as alternatives (maybe... one doing more damage, the other giving bonus range?)
I mean, come on, would it not be -great- to have more choices?1 -

Marginis✭✭✭✭✭While I don't think ESO necessarily needs to add wands, it has been an oft requested feature that there be a one-handed magic weapon, such as a wand, gauntlet, totem, or some other such accoutrement. The lack of this is probably part of the reason why frost staves were made to be more defensive weapons, as prior, mages were lacking any such defensive option, and why two handed weapons are soon going to be considered two pieces of equipment for set bonuses. These things compensated for the lack of a dual wield or one hand and shield option for magic users, ignoring the fabled spellswords that ruled TESV (and for that matter, the possibility of archers with a one handed crossbow on one hand and magic on the other).
This would allow a lot more variability in the game, and I think ZOS realizes that, but keep in mind, this would singlehandedly be the biggest change to ESO combat we've ever seen, as numerous abilities and existing weapon types would have to be touched and rebalanced, and that is to say nothing about how the game is not terribly well designed around hybrids, as min/maxing to magicka or stamina exclusively is more effective, so the entire combat system as we know it may have to be changed. ZOS has already made significant compromises to achieve similar results to what introducing one-handed magic weapons would, or make hybrids viable (albeit niche), but ignoring small changes like this, in favor of adding just one thing (one handed magic weapons), carries high risk and requires a huge investment.
This is not to say one handed magic weapons would be a bad thing - if done right I think they would be absolutely amazing -ZOS_Holden wrote: »

Sorry if I'm being the bearer of bad news. Honestly, I think it'd be great to be able to use magic without a staff. I mean, if nothing else, ZOS could just implement wands, gauntlets, totems, or some other such accoutrement as another two handed magic weapon, which might be another small step towards what we want without carrying the immediate risk of breaking the game.

✭Wands? No thank you...holding a spell in your bare hand worked just fine for earlier elder scrolls game...and for gods sake, PLEASE dont make carry around a stupid looking book or runestone. Hmm. Think I have used a sword and spells in every Elder Scrolls game I have ever played, except ESO.
I don’t care as much about carrying just a staff as I used to, and I know DW magsorc at some point has been a thing, but more options for magicka classes would be nice; carrying a staff on my back that seems to conveniently hover there kinda breaks the immersion0 -

Due to a UI glitch the other day in vet scalecaller my tank got his weapon skins reversed somehow so I was puncturing with an ice staff and shooting balls of ice out of the tip of my sword, does that count?1 -

And, THIS is why wands are awesome! Because in TES, we could cast from hand (not object), but, if we MUST have an object (for whatever reason, maybe programming reasons, who knows), then, we should at least be able to mix and match! Fire/Ice, Shock/Rejuv, etc etc... can't do that with staves.0 -
