Communication about down times

So in less than 24 hours we have yet another unexpected server maintenance.

This causes two areas of concern for me.

One, this game should have done a solid open beta the last two weeks like most MMOs do prior to release using their most current version. What we got was a stress test weekend two weeks prior that was on an older version and was intended more on testing the imperial addons to the game. In this way you have a better chance to catch whatever bugs are causing the server maintenance during beta instead of catching them at release when you get irate customers at that point.

That really wasn't smart all things considered.

Two, the dev team currently leaves a lot to be desired with communication. Three hours into a down time and we still get "We are bringing the North American megaserver down for maintenance." At this point it isn't present tense and you need to say "We brought the ... at 1 PM EDT" or the like and then follow up with something like "Down time is currently unknown but will give updates soon."

This isn't rocket science. A update doesn't have to be a long spill. It can be something like "We are still attempting to correct the issue. We don't expect the server to return to service this hour."

So far what we get is forum devs spending more time closing threads complaining about the downtime and less on informing their player base about the status of the server. This really needs to improve if they wish to keep subscriptions.

I completely agree. They seem to be in a very big hurry to justify a sub model based on content and service, yet most FTP's I have played had much better customer service. What will this be like when the full launch starts in a couple days? They should have delayed a month or two and had a few more beta events. I'm enjoying the game, but enough to pay a monthly fee? I just don't see it now.

Yeah, this has left a seriously bad taste in my mouth. Prepaid to get the three day early access, get home from work (AU) and now I've been sitting here for three hours without being able to play the game at all (with no word when it comes back). Really, really bad start. At least we can vote with our wallets if this kind of thing is going to happen a lot.

Good thing pre ordering doesn't cost extra cash. You paid for the game early and got rewarded with free game time. Now if they did this stuff during primary release then people would more of a proper reason to be "butt furious"

It was clear during beta that this game should have been released a month later, but you know how these things go nowadays :( You can see this 3 / 5 days early access as their last beta if you like.

Nice link. Seems they are providing information about the maintenance every 2 hours about. Seems reasonable to me.

I love the 15 minutes notice.... I thought one of the points of the mega server was the could release updates as the server was up?

I thought the exact same thing when I logged in day one of early access and the same quest bugs and glitches I had been reporting for 3 months were still in game lol

yeah this early access thing is a joke, been down over 5 hours now and I only just got on when I got the 15 min notice

going to bed, guys, please leave me a note about how long this "a few hours" maintenance time (in hours) when it's up (hopefully, I do not find out it's still "under a few hours maintenance" after work tomorrow lol), just wanna see what they made of, and what kind of services I am expecting from this MMORPG, Thanks good night :D

One of my first comments as they released the game, was the fact that some of the bugs I reported in Beta were still persistent in the release, I think there should have been a push on the date for on month, and a full open beta for a week or two. Then open the servers, or do what EOP did, just play open beta until it was not beta anymore.

I had suggested, in some "Feedback" that they should incorporate a Server Status indicator into the Launcher. That way I could tell if they were up, or not, with greater ease. As it stands now you have to try and play to get some indication that the servers are down. Which is less than optimal IMHO.

But to those who feel bad that you can't play yet... I was playing before the downtime. Correction! I was attempting to play before the downtime and it was almost completely "UnPlayable". It was freezing up for 2-3 seconds at a time, at least every minute. I was killing mobs that I then could not loot. And I was having issues where mobs could attack me and I couldn't do anything to them. And on top of that some missions were simply not working.

So don't feel bad. You'll eventually get in and then you can participate in "Paid Beta". Its so much fun! *rolleyes*

Now I guess I'll get some more sleep so when the servers come up I can try to level up.

My only real complaint so far about communication is the "soon" that appears in everything. Drop it! Saying "This will be addressed in a future patch" is more than enough info. Tacking the "soon" onto that just sounds...amateurish - and it's not needed (Especially in THIS community - the MMO community - where soon means "within the next 3.2 minutes")
