Ever since i downloaded thieve's guild patch when i try to play i get error ''Your DirectX version is unsupported'' and in the link that shows me it says i must have directx11 which i already have. Then i searched reddit and i asked some friends on Steam who have bought the game and they have same prolblem. What is this stupid error?

The error is telling you that you must do one of two things...or both.
    1. update your video card drivers and OS
    2. update your video card (buy a new one)
    3. Both 1 and 2

My gaming laptop no longer runs this...its only 3 -4years old but that is just enough to matter.
If you're getting the error, its very unlikely that your card does run DirectX11....very unlikely if you're drivers and OS are updated

i type in dxdiag on startup and it says clearly: DirectX Version: DirectX 11 + i run many other modern games that need Dirext11 i dont know what they did but this error will throw away even the remaining people who gave a second chance to this game. It ran fine until now but with this patch they killed it

You need to check the feature level, not the DirectX version.

Your card probably isn't DX11 then OP.

    What is your GPU?

Throwing the same error. My sys specs:

Had no problem running ESO before the patch.

Nvidia Geforce Drivers are updated to latest version. Java oracle JRE/JDK updated to latest version.

If your GPU is nvidia, there has been a driver update one or two days ago. I was getting the same error then noticed i need to update driver, then problem fixed.

    Quite.

I'm guessing the necro'er has updated Windows 10 to the new version 1803 which is known to be causing problems - surprise, surprise!

There's nothing wrong with using old drivers, unless you're using version 1803 of Windows 10.

The latest nvidia update (397.31) did this to my computer (gtx 970). It completely uninstalled DX11 and 12. Reinstalling the previous version (actually 2 version ago) fixed it for me.

Just a few minutes ago the game crashed for me and when I tried to restart it, I got this same error. I had updated my NVIDIA drivers a few days ago (to the version prior to 397.31), and continued to play all that time with no problems. I didn't update either my system or my drivers today, so I'm not sure why the crash and why the message now.

I've got this error a couple times this week as well. The error sometimes occurs after playing ESO for a while, log out and close game, then later when I try to run the game this error pops up. I've also noticed a couple times after getting this error that NVIDIA Experience is trying to download/update the same driver again because it thinks it's not installed. Really weird stuff...

The only things that have changed on my PC lately are updating NVIDIA drivers (clean install) and I also installed Far Cry 5 which installed some new DirectX files. I've never seen this DirectX error before.

    PC/NA
    Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (v 1709)
    Intel i7 6700k @ 4.20 ghz
    NVIDIA GTX 1080
    32GB RAM
Samsung 500GB M.2 NVMe SSD (windows)
Samsung 1TB 850 PRO SSD (games)

I only saw "Critical Error - Your DirectX version is unsupported" in the title...

    Edit:
Gonna uninstall 397.31 and install 391.35...

Same problem here. I play the game, quit but don't restart or shut down my PC and when I start the game again I get the error. Happened every day since the 397.31 driver update. Once I get the error I check NVidia Experience which installs the same driver again... each day. Really weird stuff, but I guess it's the 397.31 driver that causes it.

Not an ESO problem - there were problems with nvidia's drivers this last week. Tech sites have been shouting about it quite a lot. They <think> they only support DX9...

Just reinstall the drivers, will be fine.

This happened to me after downloading the latest NVIDIA drivers. The 'temporary' solution that works until they release a new driver version is to go into your task manager and end all NVIDIA processes. Then you can play the game again.
