Ok, so the general consensus is that you get the trait from another player (guild mate making a piece, or from guild stores) but where did their knowledge of the trait originate? Is it all cloned from that one quest reward being deconstructed in the past (by 40-odd different players to account for all possible items)?
If there's some other source, I'd like to know.
The recent event gave me more nirncrux than I'd seen in a few months of farming for it.

Same here. I keep getting surveys in Craglorn, but have not seen any Nirncrux drop from them, nor any isolated nodes along the way. I don't have a huge stock that will let everyone learn everything.
I'm wondering what the best strategy is for learning the trait. It looks like I should start with someone who has no traits learned on the piece in question, and have them replicate for the other crafters, a few hours later. The question then is whether to give priority to more pieces learned, or having every crafter learn the same piece ASAP. My main crafter who knows more motifs will get second round each time, so I'm ready for any Master Writ needing it, but what's best for the rest?

There's one quest in Craglorn that gives a nirnhoned random nirnhoned item, can be a weapon or armor piece:
http://en.uesp.net/wiki/Online:Dawn_of_the_Exalted_Viper
Other than that vMA & vDSA can drop nirnhoned weapons, trial and PvP leaderboard may drop legendary weapons and armor in nirnhoned and of course players who have researched the trait and make items for research

No, each character can only receive one nirn quest reward for the Craglorn main quest.
