If nothing else you get to choose between a random reward and a token. After you gain enough tokens you can BUY your choice with them. Worked just fine in DDO but the more mainstream MMOs want you to stay at the RNG trough and feed.12 -

Yeah, this. Say a weapon costs like, 20-30 tokens to buy, and you get 1 token after a run. It'd be nice to know that you'll eventually be able to save up for the weapon you want and it's not just a crap show every time.
I've been farming for the bow for weeks now, and I have multiples of every single drop from vMA except for the bow. It's not even funny anymoreAKA The Goblinator, PC/EU10 -

✭✭✭✭✭At one point in time I'd have said yes. Now, with transmute and having multiples of every weapon inside of 40 runs, I'd say it's not really needed anymore. That's just me tho.

✭✭✭Got a good chuckle out of the third option.
I happened to fall into that unfortunate "sweet spot" of embarking on the Maelstrom weapon grind *after* the loot table had been diluted (previously it had been only precise/sharp/defending) and *before* Transmutation, during the time when Maelstrom DW weapons and Maelstrom 2H weapons were still considered BiS as well. But even with Transmutation, it can still be a grind. On my PC account, I haven't had a bow or lightning staff drop yet (and just finally got an inferno last night). First 23 runs were all ice staves, S&B, 2H, and DW (I have 9 ice staves lol).
Hundreds and hundreds of runs, probably nearing thousands of hours, to get that dastardly Sharpened Inferno (actually had a hell of a time getting anything other than 2H and restos to drop in Sharpened).
That said, I'm not sure that getting to choose your weapon *every* time is the right way to go.
How about an alternative: what if you got to choose your weapon for a leaderboard reward? The completion still rewards a random drop but get on the leaderboard and you can have whatever you want. The same could apply to Trials gear as well ... for instance, I couldn't get a War Machine dagger to drop for ages, long after we were blasting through vHoF HM I was still joining up with PUG nHoF farm runs to get it.Edited by LiquidPony on May 1, 2018 9:37PM3 -

I haven't beaten VMA yet. Mostly because I have to be in the mood to throw myself repeatedly into the arena and that happens rarely.
But.
In my experience running the early round with several characters, once I beat a round once, I can beat a round twice. In fact, it gets easier the second and third time.
This seems in line with the experiences of others where the more you run it and the more you know its mechanics and spawns, the easier VMA gets.
So once I finish VMA, I anticipate that repeating it will be easier than the first clear.
Therefore, I personally see no need for a token even though it would benefit me in the event that I finish VMA in anything like a timely manner. Instead of deciding to fish for master angler on yet another character...Edited by VaranisArano on May 1, 2018 10:05PM1 -

Yo_Donno✭✭✭First run I ever did was a sharpened inferno (This was one year after the orsinium DLC dropped, during the double drops event.)
Flash forward to the day before Clockwork city drops, i get my first lightning staff ever. After doing probably an average of 3 runs per week.
I think we have yet to wrap our brains around the fact that RANDOM drop rates, really are random. theres no guarantee youll get anything ever.2 -

✭✭✭✭✭Not if it's one to one though. Not all vMA weapons are equal. Certain weapons like lightning/inferno staves, bows, etc should cost more than one token.

✭I've managed to complete VMA 5 times so far, because the lag is crippling most of the time - the only "good" time I can run it is if I can get up around 5am... so no, I don't think I'd want to run it 20-30 times to get one weapon.
So far I've gotten a Sharp Ice, a pair of Swords in Sharp & Precise, two Restos (can't remember trait) and I think a Greatsword.
I have enough characters that at least two or three of those will get use.

It's ok for me to get the chosen weapon after 15-20 runs.
It's ok to choose "Loot the weapon or get the token instead" at the end of run. So I'll have to reject my current reward for obtaining a piece of desired one. It could be implemented even in the way of crown gems for example: dismantle your maelstrom weapon and get the maelstrom token.

✭This is very simple. The whole debate is that people should make effort to get the best weapons, no argument there. So a person can be offered two options, be luck and drop the item she desires or after 10 runs (10 tokens) she can get a weapon of choice. The person clearly will have demonstrated her skill by beating the arena 10 times, 10 tokens, and in case she wasn't luck, her efforts won't go to waste. Win, win.2 -

✭✭✭✭✭Before retraiting i would say yes but even then I wouldnt want it to be "1 run = 1 weapon" token. Tokens suppose to help with fighting RNG not totally removing it so I would be ok with collecting tokens for runs and beeing able to exchange like 30-40 of those tokens for 1 weapon. Now when retraiting is in the game I think 40 runs is enough to get what you want and then retrait it to desired trait.1 -
