This. Giving players the ability to inspect you will only fuel the more than abundant elitism plaguing group content. We need less of that not more.

i agree but u cant do it all the time, or even at someone who is afk in a big city.
U see something u like, press inspect and u leave.

Oh well.
I disliked this option in other games and I do not want it.

I'm against it personally, there's this little thing called asking you can type it in group, whisper it get on a mic. I mean in an mmo you want people to communicate right? There's a nice conversation starter. I.e a stranger walks up and says that awesome I really like it where did you get that top? There's a conversation or take 2 stranger walks up and says aren't your white Elle machpheson lacy rose underwear itchy while your just in tracksuit at supermarket and that's - OMG call the police kind of intro. There too many stalky lurker things in this world I'd like a break from in a game myself.
Besides I don't like anyone knowing I'm wielding an enchanted nirnhoned broom. it would just make newer players jealous

I think it is because it ends up causing friction because some folks place too much weight upon "FoTM" equipment.

i can see this happening after a long time yes. its a shame it can lead to this. i thought of it as a helping tool for newer players and even casuals to look up to whats good and how its performing live, even what is good looking and for example how the worm cult motifs actually look like in game(even if there are videos showcasing it i know)

Top secrets? Sorry, don't get that bit. Point is folks use it to instantly decide against people who aren't wearing exactly what they think they should be. This has happened in EVERY game where inspect exists. It's just a tool that can be and often is used to dismiss people without actually giving them a go and that causes friction.

Well, as is so often said around here: Talk to them! Many, if not most, are happy to discuss this sort of thing provided you don't ask in mid-battle or something silly like that. Yeah, there will be some who don't care to discuss it but people like to brag and talk about themselves. Human nature.
I do not support player inspection in ESO. In my experience, inspection makes a game community more toxic. I don't give 2 figs what any random thinks of my build. It works for me, and it works for my guild groups. It's a regular part of conversation with the few people who's opinion I value.
And I don't usually care about anybody else's build either. If neither my pve nor pvp guilds are doing anything, I run pug dungeons. A lot. Working with sub-optimal groups has made me a better, more adaptive player. And I'd like to think that I've helped others improve as well. The improvement seldom has anything to do with gear, but skill rotation, positioning, combat awareness, and mechanics. Things they would never get an opportunity to learn if they were kicked because of player inspection.
If you want to know what others are wearing or slotting, ask them. If you’re not willing to do that, maybe this isn’t the game for you.

and if you aren't doing and wearing what they think is popular is one reason people hen pik certain people and it has even led people meeting to do violence in real life because of what was spoken in game.

well my main issue was that if somebody is actually interested and open to tell me what he is using ,he also wouldnt mind me just checking it out without him even noticing. Also i cant always ask somebody about it, he might even be busy, afk ,or for some reason that has happened to me before the person answering with only 1 word.

The inspection option/button was called "examine" in that game, and you could tab-target players/NPCs, etc. It was much easier to target things; whereas in ESO, you have to walk up next to that person and hold F and scroll through the wheel circle to find and click the option. Which is kind of tedious and user-unfriendly.
In FFXI, if someone examined you, it would show up in your chat-log with a message saying "Player-Name examined you." You could do /anonymous to hide your level, but people could still see the level of your equipped gear. In addition, FFXI had bazaars and bazaar comments, where you could sell stuff from your inventory (which people would see when they examined/inspected you) and bazaar comments were a way to advertise yourself (sort of like guild-note comments in ESO).
For ESO, I would support an optional "inspection feature" similar to that of duels, where you can accept/decline the request on the spot, or an option in game-play/social Settings to auto-decline "inspection requests" from other players or guildies or friends, etc. ZOS could even implement tiered options that you could set and customize, like people on your friends-list and/or people in your guild(s) can inspect you, but random players cannot; or, you know, whatever you choose to set the inspection option feature to do.
Inspection requests could be an in-game notification similar to that of friend-requests, guild-invite requests, duel invites, trial/leader-board notifications, and whatever else.
And if ZOS were ever to implement such a feature, it would take into account that player's outfit/costume etc and show you their real-gear versus their cosmetic-style gear.
Just my thoughts. It would be a nice-to-have quality-of-life improvement/feature, but we are fine without it, too.

If someone random is just hanging around, possibly afk which you don’t know because you have no contact or interaction with them, why would you even care what they’re wearing?
Do you grab random people on the street to look at the tags on their clothing, just to satisfy your own curiosity?
