@accounthandle Displaying in guild rosters & chat. This needs to go ASAP!

So in the beta's ive been a huge supporter of getting rid of this feature. Ive made multiple threads, submitted multiple /feedbacks about this and for the majority seen that 75% of the playerbase want this removed(5% want it and 20% dont care). I dont feel like writing another long novel about this as i have before in the beta forum sections but this NEEDS to be addressed.

1) Hacking: Yes you can argue all you want about having a mindbogglingly good password that you cant even remember without having to access your password keeper app on your phone or computer. But the fact of the matter is everyone has access to one half of your account information.

2) Identify Protection: First off, and this mostly will apply to females but will also apply to some men. I have already seen multiple players use in part or whole, their real names as their handle. Ya all i'll say is this. Let the stalking begin.

3) Immersion & Roleplayers: While i am not a huge RP'er there are those players who are. I cant even begin to imagine players who like to roleplay and having to deal with seeing names in guild chat like @pimpsbro1 or @mariobrosmash @pixiesex @81bobturnerx1.

Those were probably the biggest factors ive read and talked with from other players.

On a side note, i think the intention Zen had was excellent as it allows everyone to keep in contact with a players multiple characters easier.

Here are the solutions i have posted before.

1) Get rid of it. Bye Bye, ex-nay-with-the-accounthandles-ay.

2a) Keep the accounthandles ingame and a valid way to keep track of a players multiple characters, but add an account "Nickname" in replace of it being displayed. This will be displayed in the guild roster and in guild chat along with in your friends list. This "nickname" will have no link to your account login information.

2b) Keep the accounthandles ingame and a valid way to keep track of a players multiple characters, but instead of the accounthandle being listed on the guild roster, in guild chat or in the friends list default to "current character being played by player/account".

Currently the guild roster and friends list shows the @accountname, hovering your mouse over the @accountname will show you the name of the character they are on. Simply swap this, character name defaults in guild roster & chat and hovering over character name shows @accounthandle.

IMO 2B seems the easiest way to fix this problem but the underlying problems of 1 & 2 still factor in.

So how would you guys like to see this handles

1? 2a? 2b?

    I vote for #1

Had I known how my account name would be used in-game for guild chat and friend finding I would have picked a different name.

Not terribly worried at the moment but it is annoying and would rather see it go away. At least until more options can be created that allow me to control who sees what.

THIS for me. I had no idea it would be displayed ingame.

I would like your actual character name to display when chatting in guild but I dont mind it being able to be seen. I kind of like how the entire account is linked I hope it will get rid of some of the trolls that being anonymous in MMOs has caused. You ignore one person you ignore the whole damn account, better be a decent person or you will be forever screwed. what are you going to transfer? hahaha. Reminds me of EQ. your reputation was EVERYTHING.

Okay first off are you aware that once you sign into your account your home PC becomes the only trusted sight from which you can log in? Meaning, that if you give me your user name and password, and I attempt to log in from my home, the game will challenge me to provide information that is sent to your email address. I would be completely unable to access the game without also having your email address and it's password. Just a little FYI for you to consider. No this is not an opinion this is a functioning system in game.

Secondly there is a system used across the internet for the past decade and a half that does one simple thing. It counts the number of failed attempts to log into an account. After a preset limit, the account is then denied access from that location. Trusted sights are not effected unless it is from there that number of failed attempts originate. Therefore it is perfectly all right for your account name to be displayed in the game. It's just an ID. The two part authentication system still exists, it's just that the second element is your physical location as determined by your IP/MAC address combination.

Yes, but if you look at zone chat it displays their character name but when you ignore them it uses the account name. They could do the same for guilds, just display the character name of the character your on instead of the account name.

I love the ignore feature on how that works and I do not want to see that go but i also do not agree with seeing account names in a guild. Usually having a strong complicated password is enough so long as that password has a strong encryption (128 bit).

However if people visit these unsafe sites and download a keylogger without knowing or give their details out to others they think they can trust than you are at a high risk of getting your account hacked.

An added security measure which all MMO's are adopting is to use a security token which requires you to enter a code when logging into the game.

An annoying aspect of just showing the one account name in guild is the level, faction, class of the player listed is the last character they had logged in. Makes it rather difficult to plan to level up to a certain point to level with a friend in guild when you can't tell what level toons they actually have available to play with.

Normally you could check the roster and see the levels/classes of your friends alts and then plan accordingly whether to level to catch up with them or level other toons and let them catch up to you.

yes.. but do you understand that cookie/IP can be fake very easy? yes not for regular people..
but for people that is looking with a bad intention.. the fact to have the login name makes it very easy
Is easy as in crafting the fake ip. you may say how do I get the ip of that login name? well very easy... "hey you check this pvp video " grab ip... from your already made fishing site.. you already know the login name.. sent
crafted data to login server.. do dictionary brute force attack.. since 90% of people has weak passwords.. not even going to get into the part people will fall into real fishing schemes..
    there you have it..

Hi, my names Saki and I play mmos.

I deal with creepy people with the ignore feature and with GM tickets. I once helped a friend of mine(male, no less) with a severe case of stalking that resulted in an FBI arrest.

    Stalking can be dealt with.

What my bigger question would have to be is why snyone would use their real name as an account name?

I typically used the same one for many thingd for years. My current one I wont list, but my previous one was ahnyawarcry. I moderated for warcry network under the name ahnya and it stuck. I havent used it for anything in years.

My forum name here refers to my first main in eq2. I used it on the eq2 forums as a handle there, and I am often still called Immy.

I guess Im just stumped as to how people cant make account names that dont involve personal information.

This is why I am in favor of the system itself staying. They just need to NOT display your actually account name that way. The only people that need to know your account name are you and CS when you need to verify yourself. Your guildies and people on your friendlist, or people that ignore you for whatever reason, don't need that info.

Interesting, it wasn't that smooth for me. They told me I had to set up a new account to get a new name, and they'd credit me with a beta monkey on that account (was before I'd applied a paid product, post beta, pre launch). So I set up a new account with a different email address (as I couldn't use the same one). I then had to get them to delete the old one, as there was no way I could. Finally they told me they had no way to change the email address, so I'm now stuck with the different one. Took around a dozen exchanged emails, three agents and three days.

That was last week, though, so great if it's now smooth sailing.

Not a fan of showing it, but I can see advantages to providing a single name to all. Would be good if it were a Nickname rather than account name, as it is here.
