Tank or Healer

Hi, I am currently halfway between level 30 and 40 and i'm a HealPlar. The only problem is it sucks when solo. I kind of want to try out a tank, but my team needs a healer. But my question is, is it more necessary to have a tank or a healer when in a group? Obviously I can heal them at the moment and stop them from dying, but currently, we only have 2 dps and me, a healer, so they still sustain a lot of damage in fights as they have to take on the role of tank and dps. If I was a tank, would this be more beneficial to the group or should I just stick with healer? Cheers in advance

Actually you should decide that for yourself, if you want to do that or not, because its a matter of playstyle and you may not like tanking maybe.
But this question is also easely answerable, if you are willing to help out your friends more. Now depending on which content you play with your guys, why not doing both?
As a healplar, you can invest a little bit more into health and equip a sword and a shield. For overland thats more than enough. You could taunt enemies with the skill puncture from sword and board skillline and then block with the shield and still heal up yourself and your buddies. Also in harder content like dungeons (normal and vet) this is also possible with an adjusted build.

Huh, I never actually thought of doing something like that, so I have 3 attributes in stam and health at the minute, with the rest in magicka, but if i boosted health to maybe 10/15, used some max magicka/magicka recovery heavy armour and sword/shield, I like the sound of that

You and your friends are new to the game, right?
Maybe just a bit of heavy armor and one or two health enchantements will do it ;)
You already joined a guild with your friends? You can enter 5 guilds at max, maybe you find a very friendly guild, which can give you guys a lot of tipps and tricks too;)

Yeah, we're new, we've all had the game for a while, but played at different times, so we never ever played together, and we got to about level 7, got bored and gave up xD. Now we're getting into it properly, so currently I'm the highest with level 33, we have a level 28 dps sorc and a level 22(ish) archer dps. We are part of a guild, our archer's been part of it since he started playing, but I only joined yesterday, so thought I'd post on here rather than just immediately spam them questions xD Thanks for the advice though.

Can you change your class? And what benefits would that give me?

while it is true to a certain degree, i recommend not minding such commentaries, they are mostly meant ironic. you can tank and heal pretty much on every class, you dont have to be a warden for that, your templar will do fine ;)

you are welcome. i really recommend asking for tipps in your guild, since you can get better and faster feedback than here. especially when you join a voice chat with your guildmates, they can explain stuff more specific and better. hopefully they have some patience :P
entering a MMO without some basic knowledge is hard and frustrating, so learning how the game works is very important. you are still at the beginning, just enjoy it with your friends and try to learn the basics ;)

Generally speaking at end game, people run 3 dps/ 1 tank. Lots of DPS in this game have access to good sustain tools. If they slot even one survival ability they usually don't need a dedicated healer.

Magplar tanks aren't terribly great because they lack utility outside of healing. But they can be pretty good off healers even with a SnB. Cleansing ritual gives everyone an at will purge. BoL can heal someone super low, fast. Next patch healing ritual becomes an AOE but it's probably too expensive for tanks. Restoring light can give minor magicka steal if your two dps friends are mages. The defense rune morphs are both good, one morph makes your self healing really high and makes you take hits better while the other gives magicka back. Power of the light helps team DPS and purifying light gives a group heal. Spear shards gives resources back. Sun shield is only really good if you're building max health, which is a build that invalidates the use of any off healing for the most part. And then you're left with 0 CC and 1 decent ultimate (nova) for your team.

Tanking on templars isn't really the most fun, and being a healer end game has its place but in most base content dungeons, you shouldn't need one as you guys get better.

I don't accept the premise that soloing as a healplar sucks. My healplar is very recognizable as a healing templar and solos just fine.

The same mojo that gives you strong heals makes you darn hard to kill (defense).

Several of your healing group support skills provide nice dps as a bonus (Reflective Light, Blockade, Purifying Light).

Add Sweeps for your damage/self heal and Channel Focus for your sustain and you can solo world bosses, public dungeons and certainly all overland/quest content.

PC NA(no Steam), PvE, mostly solo

I think a tank is more required because people have a lot of self healing.

Magplar tanks are hard work, they solo extremely slowly and I really struggle when I am playing with randoms.. If you are with friends it will be better. The issue is you need to set up your zone and start the fight on your terms if a random argos you can't CC the mobs back together.

Its not bad with teamwork though lots of healing and tankiness and shielding

The next patch will help out a lot, you get a bunch of new skills to use but I am intending to be more hybrid next patch.

go test your dps at guild hall and you will realize your group may not really have 2 dps.

a properly geared character with the right skills and build but poor rotation (like me) will do 15k~20k dps.
a real dps would do 30k~40k.

when you are not even lv50, with no CP and half of the skills still locked, i can imagine you doing 5k or less. it's too early to worry about build and role at your level imo.

anyway you can just use Pierce Armor and Heroic Slash every 15 seconds, spam Puncturing Sweep in between that, and call yourself a tank. that will work.

I tank with my templar. I use julianos with either plague doctor or warrior poet when doing the easier dungeons or out on my own. Reflective light and dark flare are a good combo for killing mobs on your own. You can do about 10k dps just with that, which helps.

I tend to fire off dark flare then spam reflective light until all are dead, or alternate between the two. I am sure that there are better ways to kill mobs, but the above works pretty well for me.

I’ll throw it out there because I’ve done this. Questing on a tank royally blows. Under level 50 on a tank, you don’t really have enough skill points to be effective. Leveling up all those skill lines goes pretty fast after 50.

All the public dungeons in every zone has a group event for a skill point. There’s also a skyshard in them.

Every undaunted group dungeon has a skillpoint .

Tank is more important than healer in many dungeon
