Should I use my main character in the PTS?

Hello all! I'm new to the forums, but I was invited to beta test the Summerset expansion, so I thought I should make an account.

So, I was just wondering whether it was a good idea to use my main character on the PTS, or if I should create a new one. Additionally, do levels, items, and the like transfer over to the main server if I obtain them on the PTS?

Thanks in advance for any help!

You can use your main but you will be cut off by a few bugged quest in the psijic skill quest line. But you can still test all other things.

Thanks! I assumed it was okay to do so, but I just wanted to make sure I wouldn't mess up my character or anything.

Also, bonus question: If you do/obtain something on the PTS that hasn't been implemented into the game yet, how does that transfer over to the main server?

Nothing transfers over to main server. All you achieve on pts is gone.

Ah, I assumed so. In that case I'll probably just end up creating a new character.

    Hi @TiredKhajiit,

You're welcome to play both your existing character and a new character on the PTS to test things out. New characters will start out in our brand new tutorial so you can experience that and help us test it out along with the early experience new players will have upon starting the game once Summerset is out.

Playing on your existing character helps test out the higher level character experience and process of beginning Summerset content at a high level. Both experiences are helpful to us and we appreciate your time spent in this way!

How do we move a character over to PTS? When I tried to log in last night I received a message that none of my characters were available.

    Hey @suilebhainb14_ESO,

Characters were copied over previously. Keep an eye on the Dev Tracker for info on upcoming character copies. Until then, you can create a new character or use the template one!

I'm not sure, all I know is that when I logged into the PTS for the first time my character was already there.

    Edit: Oh, never mind :P

How do we move a character over to PTS? When I tried to log in last night I received a message that none of my characters were available.

The live servers are copied to the PTS at irregular intervals. Usually a release will get 4 weeks of testing. At the beginning the current NA server will be copied over to PTS, and for the next two weeks, players will have access to that server. After two weeks, the EU server will be copied over, wiping the NA data.

Now, the current testing round is a little different. The current data is from PCNA, but it was pulled roughly a month ago, shortly after the Dragon Bones beta concluded. I don't know why (PCNA usually isn't copied to the server after a beta concludes), and there hasn't been an update in the last month. So, I'm not sure what's going on there.

Anyway, when you create a character on the PTS, note that there is a drop down box in the upper left corner of the screen. This will allow you to chose between creating a new, normal, level 1 character, and creating a level 50, character with a massive stockpile of gear, fully completed research, maxed out skill lines, and a large range of other convenient resources to allow you to quickly configure a new end-game character. (All of this is stored in containers in that character's inventory.) Additionally, the first time you create a template on the current PTS build, it will increase your account's CP to 750 (if it wasn't already).

What I'd do if I were you, (and what I'm doing currently) is play a new character from the Summerset template in a class that I already know well (magsorc) to see what characters say to a person they haven't met yet.

But I'm not even touching my main who's done literally every single quest in every zone and met every person, until it comes out on live.

I unno, a template if it’s all maxed out all golden gear just ain’t where I am. Me a month ago is completely different in pve (120 less cp, worse gear) yet, it’s exactly where I still am in PvP so I get a pretty good base line to compare changes to summerset in PvP. Seems the same so far.

Interesting enough in Pve Nightmother’s Gaze was the best thing I had going solo as far as gear goes. I used to cut a swath through NPcs in 3x armor and 2 nmg daggers. Killing stuff took noticeably longer.

I'm new to PTS so I created a new character. I had no idea there was a template I could use until I read it here - 3 or 4 days after I made my character. It would be helpful to have a tool-tip so people can know you have a choice. I wish I had or I would have used it. I have hardly any skill points, zero attribute points and that's frustrating because I can't open the psijic skills I've earned.

The templates were covered in the patch notes. Those notes also noted that the character copy was from March 15 from PC NA.

When they do the planned copy next week it will wipe everything that is in PTS now so you can use an existing PC NA character if you have one or create a template then.

It's also a drop-down menu when making a new character. When I first came to the PTS, I saw that tab at the top-left, and used it to make a character. Granted, back then, it did say "CP 630 Template", while now it just says "Summerset", so I can see not understanding what that drop-down menu meant.

Maybe it should say "CP 750 Summerset"?

Anyway, when you create a character on the PTS, note that there is a drop down box in the upper left corner of the screen.[...]

That should be put bold into the invitation mail and/or the patch notes and/or an own forum thread, because so many ppl who are new to pts dont know this. I didnt know too but the dropdown made me curious and I just tried out. Would save much time to all, ppl not understanding and ppl answering questions here and ingame.

Also the "template" thingy should be explained, bc the most pts-new players assume, there would be a template character already, when you login.

I suggest to put a sticky ["PTS - How to start" or sth like that] in the forums with those informations included, not only for summerset but also for future test, bc the questions might repeat. There is surely more to know, which has been asked a lot in the last days just making ingame chat and especially forums less readable due to a lot of questions that could be prevented by that.
    F.e.:
    - how many space does it take to install pts
    - why are my live characters not there
    - what is a template and how to create one
    - is there a transfer from pts to live (progress/items)
    - ... and many other questions being asked over and over again.

I guess I missed the template explanation in the patch notes. Still, it would be easy and very helpful to put a pop up in the character creation. I did have some of my characters from PC NA but wanted a new one to experience The Mind Trap.

Agreed. I am completely new to PTS, and a casual player, and have missed out on most of that... and I _have_ read that notification email a couple of times for detailed information. I have no problem using google (and I did so, for quite some time to figure out things), and I really don't expect to get everything presented on a silver platter, but with all the effort ZOS is putting into beta testing, a couple of helpful links in that email shouldn't be an issue at all.
