Which genius in ZOS thought putting stealable items beside craft writ boxes is a good idea?

Auto loot stealing just means you get a prompt to make sure you want to steal something. It doesn't prevent you from stealing at all.

I do all my writ crafting in mournhold cause its convenient. I also bought the Nix room for convenience. So when I accidently steal that darn inferno staff by provisioning I just port to my room and log out to wait for it to clear. Only one of my characters has any skills in Legerdemain or Thieves so even that small amount can take 30 mins to clear.

Just turn off auto loot stolen items.

That only works on things that have a popup (ex. apple basket) but there are many singular things that don't have a popup (ex. an apple).

I got bumped by the clown standing there when I went to do a drop off last weekend and stole the same thing. Crooked weasel deserved it after that. I also saw someone grab the same thing by accident the next day and felt a lot better about it not only happening to me. :)

Happens to me in real life all the time. I go to turn in my hotel room key, sign off on the bill, and walk out the front door. Then, hearing sirens approaching, I look down and realize I still have their pen. Arrghhh! Anymore, I only stay at hotels with a pool so I can quick jump in the deep end and wait until the cops drop aggro.

Wait, you thought it was by mistake ?

Oh you poor innocent thing... That was a deliberate act from a devious mind, exploiting the game's bad targeting system to deliver a decisive, targeted, trolling.

Every time you steal an item instead of turning in a writ, or clicking on a guild stall, or talking to an npc, or interact with a banker, a message is sent to ZoS HQ, bells rings, and everyone has a laugh at your expense.

It can be annoying. There is no doubt about it. Sometimes I consider that ZOS might be trolling us and purposely put lots of stray items that are easy to accidentally steal next to guild stores and quest turn-ins so this exact thing will happen.

Is this a big deal? No. But it would be nice if they extended the prompt that asks if you want to actually steal an item or not to include all items and not just those hidden inside containers. That would solve the problem.

I dont always get bounties, but when I do it's because I accidentally stole the same mother f'ing staff leaning up against the writ turn-in crates in mornhould for the 300th time. I have even seen it happen where my cursor is pointing directly at the crate and the pop up confirms it, but BAM, I am criminal scum.

I have considered making this thread a half a dozen times already.

This weekend I had an issue where a shield was sitting right in front of the provisioning drop box. Normally this wouldn't be a big problem but somehow a much larger box was merged with the drop box. There was no spot to interact with the box; I had no choice but to steal the shield to get any access to the drop box. Luckily I was able to find a spot where the NPC couldn't see me.

This was on one of my morally questionable characters, I have a couple, so it wasn't a big deal. I only have one morally upstanding character, my Imperial DK, she won't steal and will only kill in self-defense. If she ran into this issue she would have only moved the item, not stolen it. ;)

Usually it's either getting pushed by an NPC, or I hit the first press while mounted and it seems like it dismounts you before it goes ahead with the press which sometimes changes the target. It's really more of a nuisance than anything; I don't have piles of stolen goods when I'm turning in writs so I just pay the fine and live with it. I have never had an issue with items in containers; I'm not clicking that fast through it. But when you're on your 20th+ writ for the day, yeah, I will occasionally steal a loose item when focus changes because those don't have any confirmatory dialog.

I just make sure I don't have any other stolen stuff on me when I turn in writs. Pay the dumb (92 gold) fine and go on my way.

There is an addon out there that prevents stealing if you are not hidden. If you are having a ton of trouble with your character having random sticky fingers, you may want to look for it. I don't remember its name offhand.

i just hang out til the fine goes away

I had this happen again today with a quest..

Everywhere was free to loot except one lone bottle at the back of a boat for some reason.. the npc following me was a traitor to the crown and Auridon, but still found the time to say "stop thief" as i looted it without noticing it was red, apparently thieving is a higher crime than being a traitor to their country...

I had his father kill him at the end just for that...
