Your Character’s Story

What’s your favorite toon that you have? Do they have a fully fleshed-out story or background? What kind of class are they? What certain feature(s) do you like about them?

I currently don’t have a favorite, since I always change it up when I make a new character. Last night I created a female argonian templar, but previously my khajit warden was my favorite.

Edit: Due to long stories being posted (nothing against that!), please use spoiler tags if possible.

My main is my favorite, he has a rough outline of a backstory which is filled in through his adventures. I wish there was a bio screen in-game where we could type up a brief backstory and others could read.

Yes! That’s actually a really good idea, since some people make detailed bios and backgrounds for the characters

All of my characters have at least a bit of backstory. Hard to say which is my favourite.

My main is a character I've been using in almost every western RPG for about 15 years, so I guess it's safe to say she's my favourite character. But partially because she moves between games a lot her backstory is kept pretty ambiguous to allow for whatever the game throws up. In ESO she's a breton warden - daughter of a wealthy merchant who was raised to marry a (preferably even more wealthy) merchant and run his household, decided she could not imagine anything more boring so she changed her last name and went off into the world to be an adventurer instead. She spent some time with the Wyrd Sisters learning their magic and then moved on with her travels. And she will not, ever, under any circumstances admit to her mother that one of the first things she did was go and get herself killed by some awful cult. But she got better and now she's well on her way to getting revenge so it's ok really.

My other main is a khajiit templar - the latest incarnation of my usual TES character. In my head she's a cathay, from the Tenmar forest in southern Elsyweyr but she now lives in High Rock. She doesn't talk much about her childhood or family, I suspect they may be dead, but she really does not like the Altmer taking over (hold over from Morrowind, not Skyrim in case you were wondering, I swear ever altmer I met in that game was worse than the dunmer) and left home just ahead of them moving in. She went north and found nothing but war and devestation, so she kept going until there was no where further north to go (that bit is from Skyrim, but this time she drifted west). When she got there she met my main and for a while they travelled together and learned from each other, and she even adopted the same made-up last name. (Aurorel, meaning 'dawn star' - the first light that heralds a coming change.)

My crafter is a fun one. He's an Imperial dragonknight and a retired soldier. He was born in a tiny village in Cyrodiil which was never on any map and probably doesn't even exist any more. He didn't fancy himself a farmer and was never much good at books so when he was old enough he joined the army. 30 years later he'd been from one end of Tamriel to the other and back, seen more war than he thought was possible and was already thinking about retiring when an injury finally killed his military career. (No prizes for guessing what that was.) He retired to Auridon since it was one of the more peaceful places he'd been and settled down as a crafter. Then some bunch of mad-crazy necromancer wack-jobs cornered him on the way home from a tavern, dragged him off and sacrified him to their so called god. He may be retired but he couldn't let that go so he headed back out to get revenge. (Aka I did the main story for skill points.) He's now gotten himself a room in the tavern so that can't happen again and is hoping that after 3 years residency on Auridon he might finally be allowed to move to mainland Summerset soon.

I have another 4 characters too but they're not as well fleshed out and I don't want to put everyone on the forum to sleep.

My Nord stam DK grew up outside Markarth, where she used to go hunting with her dad. She only slowly found her confidence as she was overshadowed by my magblade for a while.

My magblade is an orphan, which explains how she is a Breton fighting for EP. Her parents died in a fire that was allegedly caused by a DK. Her adoptive father is currently a stablemaster in Cyrodiil. He used to be a teacher in Stonefalls though. The magblade is a complicated girl, liable to flirt, but never committing to anyone.

Aisling and Alyson are Breton twin sisters, templar and sorc respectively. They have a close relationship, although Aisling moved to EP recently. Alyson is considered a bit of a rebel by her family. She dyed her hair blonde and - shock horror - became a stamsorc for a while.

I was in beta when I started planning out my main... I knew I wanted a Sorc, and picked an Altmer for the racial passives. However, my friends all wanted to go EP. Knowing that a lot of people were complaining about “any race, any alliance”, I went out of my way to explain what an Altmer was doing fighting for EP. here was the result:
    Lorlae Adaere (pronounced: 'lôrlī ā'dī(ə)r or "lor-lie a-dire") b. 2E 559 - Altmer Sorcerer

Lorlae was just a child when she lost her family. Originally from Skywatch in eastern Auridon, her parents were well known archeologists on an excavation at the Aylied ruins of Culotte in southeastern Cryodiil. They had been warned that the continued Interregnum in Cyrodiil made the entire region dangerous for travelers without some kind of escort or protection, and the Culotte ruins were in heavily disputed territory. Dunmeri forces from Black Marsh frequently ran pillaging raids into Elsewyr, taking the bridge just to the north of the ruins, and they were known to set up basecamps in the Culotte ruins, but Lorlae's parents were confident that they would be safe. For months now the Kajiit of Elsewyr had been steadily pushing the Dunmeri back to Black Marsh, and Culotte had not seen any conflict in over a month. Her parents were confident that this was their chance to explore Culotte; confident enough in their safety that they not only brought Lorlae, they also brought her infant sister, Lorana, on the expedition.

On the fourth night, word came from a pair of Kajiit returning home that Dunmeri raiders had just made a push to the west towards Cropsford, but were still too far away to be of concern. What they didn't know was the conflict would force several bands of goblins to flee west; scattering the protecting forces from Elsewyr, and allowing the goblins right into the center of the expedition's camp. It was a slaughter. Lorlae's mother only had moments to hide the sleeping children before both adults were dragged out of their tent. With no remaining opposition, the Dunmeri continued to advance further west than they had in months. It was only the noise and confusion that kept the girls hidden until the goblins moved west; avoiding the approaching raiders.

The Dunmeri arrived a few days later expecting to set up camp in preparation for a push across Culotte Bridge. Instead, what they found was a dirt-covered, young Altmer girl wandering among the slaughtered bodies of her parents and the expedition team. The tall, dark-eyed Dunmer Raid leader ordered the burning of the bodies and not to unload their own gear; he chose to move on rather than set up camp in freshly desecrated ground. His second order was to leave the child behind; "Let the Altmeri gods save her." They scavenged through the expedition's supplies, taking what they wanted, and the soldiers moved on... All but one.

Wandering off behind some nearby outcroppings, one Dunmer remained behind. Orders or not, he couldn't stomach the thought of the young child wandering into a pack of wolves or worse. He and his wife had been left broken hearted; never having been able to having children. It wasn't the child he had wanted, but it was a child that needed them. Once the rest of the raid had cleared out of the camp and the last of them crossed the bridge, he returned to the camp and sought out the child. Lorlae sat on a patch of grass near one of the tents still standing when he walked up.

"Come," he said, "we must leave here quickly. What is your name?"

She looked up at the stranger with red eyes, "L-L-Lor-lae."

"Do you know which tent is yours, Lorlae? Can you show me?"

She pointed at a tent not too far away and he let her lead him by the hand to it. Once inside he began to search for anything that looked like it might belong to a child. The raiding party would only have taken valuables, weapons, or food. They would have left anything belonging to her, and that's what he was going to need. Through the mess he was able to find a small, opened trunk with girl's clothing, a few toys, and a journal. Opening the book, he glanced at the inside cover and saw written in a woman's hand:

To Lorlae, on your wedding day - Mother

Most of the journal pages were blank, but the beginning pages were filled with daily entries beginning with her birth. The last entry dated just yesterday...

Lorlae caught her first butterfly. She tried to set it on top of Lorana's head, but it flew away when Lorana began to cry.

    "Lorana?" He said aloud.

    "Siser!" Lorlae replied, "Baby siser!"

He felt a shock of realization. He hadn't seen any other children among the bodies. Searching more deeply through the tent, he found a few items meant for an infant... And another journal. In it he found the same handwriting and dedication but to Lorana. Based on the first entry, Lorana was only a few months old. His heart sank. Easily portable, one of the goblins had likely taken the baby with them for a later meal.

"These must be yours, Lorlae," he said with a forced smile, and gathered up some of her clothes and the two journals. "Let's get going!" and handed her a small doll.

"Siser," Lorlae said looking at the doll.

Eyes held straight ahead and hand resting on her head, he replied "Lorana isn't here."

    Forward 20 years...

Though she was raised by Dunmers, her Altmer blood still boiled when others said her name incorrectly or looked at her as an outsider. She often comes across as snobbish to the people around her (again, her Altmer lineage), but she genuinely loves her adoptive family and friends. Also in spite of her lineage, Lorlae is fiercely loyal to the Ebonhart Pact.

She lost many friends as a result of the Akaviri invasion, and she was proud to see the three races, Nord, Dunmer, and Argonian, come together as one. She was also proud to join that force in protecting their lands from the Daggerfall Covenant and newly formed Aldmeri Dominion.

She has little stomach for fighting, but understands the importance of the war effort. Though she's been trained by Mage's Guild in Dark Magic and Storm Calling, she was drawn to the role of a healer; repaying the debt she still feels she owes the Pact and to those that saved her from certain death wandering alone in Cyrodiil. However, she was growing increasingly frustrated as the war progressed; she just wasn't as effective as a healer as she wanted to be. She was afraid to say it out loud, but she knew her abilities were far more suited for battle, than healing.

Before she returned to the Southern Morrowind Gate and to battle, she made one last stop at her private shrine. Hidden away down the hill from her parents' farm, she had secretly crafted three memorial markers from stone pieces she found a various Aylied ruins she had passed through while fighting in Cyrodiil. Simple in design, and framed by several white hosta (a plant common to Auridon), the marker faces contained only one word each: "Mother", "Father", and "Lorana". She never knew her real parents' names. Lorlae only knew her sister's name thanks to the journals her adoptive father recovered when he had found her. She knelt down in front of her first family and said a prayer. Though she was raised Dunmeri, she still managed to find time to study the Altmer pantheon and even learned a prayer she thought would pay respect to her long lost family...

"The heart of Mara beats beneath the breath of every mer, connecting us by blood and spirit."

Lorlae stood, let out a sigh, and turned toward her horse to make the ride from Kragenmoor to meet up with her comrades in the Pact Militia at the Southern Morrowind Gate.

“Will this conflict ever end?”, she wondered. Though her life was in the east, deep inside her heart she wondered about her birthplace and if she would ever get to see it?

    ***

If you actually read all that, thank you... The entire story is much longer but mostly unwritten. With the release of Morrowind, I created a Altmer Warden; again, aligned to EP. I decided that since I already had an Altmer in EP, my second Altmer should somehow be related... So, I retconned Lorana into Lorlae's back story and I'm rather happy with the results. If I ever have another burst of creativity, I'll explain how Lorana made it out of the Aylied ruins alive and arrived in Vvardenfell 20 years later. I already know how... I just have to write it down.

Edit: added Spoiler tags to hide the word-wall.

I'm trying to figure out "higher" level players ALWAYS wearing piles of armor and helmets. My characters all seem to have unique features and usually don't wear helmets.

Why try to create a specific unique character and then hide behind a helmet? I can have the same upgraded armor and wear a wedding dress if I want...just haven't bought one yet. B)

My guess is their emphasis is on playing the game to win at all costs?

My Dunmer Vestige was a Captain in the Pact's war in Cyrodiil until her unit was captured by the Worm Cult, she was sacrificed by Mannimarco, lost her memory, and teamed up with an Argonians bard to save the world.

My Breton Silencer, on the other hand, is a poor cousin of the Montclairs who hates vampires and pretty much got thrown out of the family for disparaging the Baron's friendship with Ravenwatch. She found a better, deadlier family on the Gold Coast and eventually returned to Rivenspire to bring the other Montclairs down...

They love the Empire and are both sad to have left family and friends behind in Cyrodiil, but they decided not to serve an Empire allied to, and in effect serving, Molag Bal. They would both return to help rebuild the Empire in a heartbeat provided the corruption gets rooted out and proper new leadership installed, though neither is sure that the Tharns are that proper new leadership.

My main toon, Queen Brienne. Her story is that there are those in Tamriel that believe she is the rightful heir to the Dominion Throne and the rightful ruler of Tamriel. She has never openly opposed Ayrenn or the Empress Reagent though, but has in fact worked hard to become a confidant of Ayrenn. Although she is referred to in royal title by people loyal to her lineage, it's not official.

She is conflicted over her destiny, having been the chosen one, and calls for her to depose Ayrenn and take the throne by force if she must. She isn't sure what she wants. And she knows an all out war with Clivia for rule of Tamriel would wreak destruction on the land and it's people.

She is considered "the people's Queen" where Ayrenn feels so inaccessible to most. She helps where she can, struggling with her follower's and her family's desires for her. She took up the path of magic, becoming a powerful sorceress. She spends much of her time in the Capital of Grahtwood and with the Khajiti in the Roost. She plans to take up residence in Summerset once the borders are open. She's heard there are those there that are displeased with the Proxy Queen and Ayrenn and want to meet her.

My namesake is also my main. And I'm planning a whole fanfic novel or whatever you wanna call it about his exploits, both past and present. Like the time he burned down an orphanage whose basement he ran a skooma lab out of and accidentally burnt down the orphanage in an accident. Or the time he joined a cult because they had cool uniforms only to be sacrificed in a deadric ritual and end up in Coldharbour. Or more recently that OTHER time he joined a cult because he liked their outfits even though they were a neo-dragonpriest cult. At least this time he isn't being sacrificed. Yet.

I think it's an exaggeration to say higher level characters are always wearing helms, but here's a few reasons they might choose to:

    1) Role-playing - some people think it's unrealistic to go into combat with your helmet hidden, especially if you're wearing heavy armour. Why would you protect everything except your head?

    2) Some people might just think their character looks better with a helmet on. Not necessarily because they don't like how the character looks but because it suits the style they're going for.

    3) Some high level players will have rare monster helms which are difficult to obtain and want to show them off.

    4) They've been looking at the same character for hundreds of hours now and wanted a change.

I very rarely have the helmet showing on any of my characters. But on some I do because I've actually managed to find one which looks good on them and goes well with their armour. And I typically switch to a non-armour costume (like the pirate costume, Rumare Waterfront tunic or a dress) when in town so I have plenty of opportunities to see their face.

My character's story is the same as everyone else's; forced to be a hero and save Nirn from Molag Bal!

I've been thinking, so if I never stop Molag Bal will he ever complete his plan? Will everyone have to stop playing cause Nirn is destroyed? Will players be upset with me? Since this game is set before the other Elder Scrolls games if I don't stop Molag Bal will that erase all the other games? If I pop in Skyrim for the Switch will I get an error "game doesn't exist thanks for not saving Nrin"?

If not what is the point?

Or do people complete the main story NOT to stop Molag Bal but to receive those precious, precious ability points?

All of my Bretons are part of the same family (kinda sorta). My main (and his younger brother, who I've yet to make) is part of the Blackwood family, my other two (Glace and Ophelia) are part of the Argent family. The two families are cousins on the mother's side. In terms of ages, it goes; Veric Blackwood, Glace Argent, Ophelia Argent, and the two characters I've yet to make are the same age, while being one from each family. (as in, Glace and Ophelia get a younger bro, and Veric gets a younger bro.) Every Breton I make is a mage in some way, shape, or form, so they'll all get to try their hands at joining the Psijic Order. Ophelia is a NB healer, Glace is a warden tank, Veric is a magsorc with a clannfear, and the other two will be a magblade (the Blackwood boy), and a stamsorc (the Argent boy).

My Khajiit was once from a wealthy family in Pelletine (that's Southern Elsweyr to all you foreigners), and after a fierce betrayal, he left to join the TG/DB to become a master thief and sufficient in the art of murder. (When we get southern Elsweyr as a DLC or Chapter or whatnot, Suunleth-dar will eventually go home and see what's changed. Suunleth-dar is a stamblade.

My Argonian is a Hist-Priest (mag warden), wielding fierce frost and nature magicks. He's on a journey to see the world, meet new people, and learn new magic before going home to Murkmire.

My Dunmer is part of a HUGE house that I created, House Antharys. Most of them are Telvanni wizards, some are part of House Redoran, and few (maybe 1 or 2) are with either Hlaalu or Indoril. There are 20 of them, each representing a different type of the classes. Like, my main Dunmer (Teldryn) is a magdk, but there's one who's a stam warden, or a Sorc healer, or even a templar tank.

My Altmer are brothers from the Solinar family. Coeus is the one who joined the Mages Guild, while Ilianos joined the Fighters Guild. Coeus was called "mystical in his skills", so he took on the title: "Coeus the Mystic", while Ilianos just reps his family name. Coeus is a magsorc, Ilianos is a stamplar.

If people are gonna start writing these several paragraph backstories it'd probably be best if they were hidden in spoilers.

My Main doesn't have a story. Her name wasn't even thought out, just a place holder when I made her. (Katt Blade, for a NB) But she's a Khajiit of the Pact, cause she approves of the Nords and Argonians. (she's perfectly ok with stabbing every Dunmer that even jokes about Slavery) She's also fond of the Covenant, and thinks Emeric and Jorunn could be best bros if they tried. Absolutely hates the Dominion though.

If people are gonna start writing these several paragraph backstories it'd probably be best if they were hidden in spoilers.

Never used them before. Edited my post to add the tags. Thanks for the tip!

How do you create a 'Spoilers' thing? I've got 2 mains and 3 secondaries and like thinking up backstories for my characters so...it could get kinda long.

i’d like to know as well

At the start of the text you want to hide, type the tag (with brackets) [spo iler] Put in the text, then end it with [/spo iler]... Without the extra space in the middle.

I have a bunch of characters, and most of them have backstories. The depth and breadth mostly depends on how much I play them. The ones with backstories all have individual homes as well, and many also have specific pets and mounts.

My dunmer characters (aside from 1) are related. Four are siblings, and one is a cousin. Their backstory is full of grimdark abuse and trauma, and their individual and intertwined stories are around dealing with this shared terrible past and how they have individually dealt with whatever happened to them. The cousin is an outsider (not from the abusive family line) that attempts to ground the others while dealing with their own unique issue. The entire set of story arcs have themes relating to monsters: how they are made, how they are dealt with, and how they can be redeemed. I'm very lucky to have some good people to RP these dynamic characters with and deal with such heavy topics in a tasteful, realistic (for a game) way. Each of the 4 siblings has an individual home, and they also have a shared family homestead where one of them lives as a caretaker. The cousin is a nomad and tends to couch surf. The homestead is Amaya Lake Lodge, and other homes are Velothi Reverie, Kragenhome, Flaming Nix Deluxe Garret, Sisters of the Sands apartments, Ald Velothi Harbor House, and St Delyns Plaza Inn Room.

I have a vampire that amounts to a creepy background character. Daughter of an Imperial vinter, sent away under the shadow of war, enslaved and then turned vampire by a Nord Vampire who was later killed. Fled to a swamp to abduct random travelers off the road and use surgical/medical tools to gather blood (and not kill/infect them), releasing them several months later, miles away. She never wanted undeath, but she's not giving it up, either. Only recently left her swampy home. Her home is a cave I made from Black Vine Villa.

I have a shadowscale argonian, a professional of the Dark Brotherhood. Oddly enough, when she isn't on contract, she is a healer. She's a distant associate of one of the main dunmer siblings. Unlike that dunmer though, she is strictly professional, efficient, and not a thief as well. If you've watched the movie Pulp Fiction, you might equate her to be the Fixer in many ways. When she isn't on contract, you might find her around her home, Humblemud, tending her guar.

My wood elf is an archer and wilderness guide. Her story isn't very deep yet, but I have snugpod set aside for her, which I plan to have as a custom grown haven for her. It already has a bunch of that organic telvanni furniture.

My Khajiit is a bit of a unique case. With one guild I have her as a thief, a picker of locks, and a pirate. With another, she wears the shadowsilk gem (or whatever it is) and is a house goblin that my main pays to keep her house clean. The original idea with her was to make her a tank while a friend had a goblin healer and we would do randoms, subjecting our poor hapless dps to us talking in group like goblins do. Alas, my friend no longer plays. Pirate Cat has no home yet. The goblin alter ego lives with my main character, or alternately, in another cave I made from Cyrodiil Jungle House. I suppose I can just turn that cave into a smugglers grotto and it serve as home to both of them.

Another Argonian I have, also a thief, is more mercenary than straight criminal. She just has trouble with authority, and was formerly a slave. She escaped, and now makes her way in the world with a chip on her shoulder and a firm dislike for authority. I'm working on gold to get her a place. Maybe she will share the cave with pirate cat/goblin?

I have an unrelated dunmer character. Once a beggar, then jailed for a crime they did not commit, they have been recently released to find their accuser has died... and left them everything in their will. With regained freedom, an unexpected boon of a leg up, and a bit of a mystery on their hands, they need to figure out what they are going to do with their life. They live at Autumns Gate, which their accuser had used as a home and small magical laboratory.

Lastly, I have an Altmer vampire, a sorcerer, whose character concept is to be a 'living spell'. She runs/owns/is bound to a magical tavern that offers sanctuary to certain entities. That tavern is Strident Springs Demesne.

...That's a lot of characters, jeez.

I write backstories for all of my characters, but the joint backstory of my Sorcerer and my Nightblade is by far my favorite of them all.

They’re twins, and their names are Sherivah and Nephiah Telvanni. I’ll tell the shortened version of their backstory because it’s after midnight. =P

Sherivah and Nephiah were seemingly born to be incredibly powerful wizards. They were driven by a boundless curiosity and an insatiable thirst for knowledge and power, and mastered very high level forms of magic at an astonishingly young age.

Unfortunately, their thirst for knowledge and power began to consume them. They quickly began to isolate themselves from the rest of their House and their family. They eventually abandoned their family altogether and left Morrowind to travel Tamriel in hopes of finding the arcane secrets they desired.

Two years into their journey, they attempted a forbidden spell. The spell failed, and left both of them horrifically disfigured, and with only a vague recollection of who they were.

Now they travel Tamriel again, hooded and cloaked, but with a new purpose: to piece together their fragmented memories and learn where they belong in this world.

My stamden, thogaids, has quite the backstory about how his life got flipped upside down.

He was from West Alik’r, born and raised. He liked to play and spent most of his time chilling and relaxing. But one day, a couple of guys who weren’t very swell started making trouble in the town of Sentinel. He got in one little fight, and his mom raised hell, and said “you’re moving in with auntie and uncle in Vvardenfell”

    His bear is named Carlton.

What’s your favorite toon that you have? Do they have a fully fleshed-out story or background? What kind of class are they? What certain feature(s) do you like about them?
My favorites are my three mains... Leska the nightblade bounty huntress and Kelas the sorceror goth librartian have full fleshed out backstories, Kes the paladin templar... was more of an accident, supposed to be a mere crafting alt, but... she grew on me, so...

Leskandera has a classic tale - long story short: lost her family in the akaviri invasion as a kid, joined the pact army, got taken prisoner, escaped, fell in with a unlawful crowd while making her way back to pact lands...

Kelasendar is more boring, just a bookish nerdy type who only ever wanted to be alone with lots of books and maybe write bad poetry about how much life sucks... but got thrown into nadventuring regardless.

And Kes... is simply an orc who likes justice, which did not sit well with her other malacath-worshipping clan, so she left to bring the iron hammer of justice to the world in stendarrs name (and is generally a little naive about it).

(and yeah, I do have a little backstory tale collection for each of them - and reflect that in their gaming too, so Kes will -never- do the criminal DLCs for example...)
