Login Error - Connection to Steam

I am a returning player and I cannot login to my old account, I get the following error message when I launch the game: Login Error - Unable to initialize connection to Steam. Please ensure the game was launched through Steam or try again later.
I have not purchased the game through Steam and I am able to login at https://account.elderscrollsonline.com to see my account details.
Any idea what might be wrong?
