Login Error - Connection to Steam

I am a returning player and I cannot login to my old account, I get the following error message when I launch the game: Login Error - Unable to initialize connection to Steam. Please ensure the game was launched through Steam or try again later.

I have not purchased the game through Steam and I am able to login at https://account.elderscrollsonline.com to see my account details.

Any idea what might be wrong?

If you are getting this Steam login error when you don't own the game through Steam, please contact customer support to start a ticket.
