The lack of quality in combat is driving players away from ESO

I play for exploration, story, character development, crafting, and housing. I've never even noticed the combat "feel." It's all number crunching to me anyway. I could push a button, get a result back, and be just as happy.

I agree. These are my 'goals' of playing as well beside PvP. :D . To be honest Two handed weapon animations are appealing enough for me

ZOS has revamped combat animations before, and they may again, but a fundamental overhaul is unlikely.

Rofl. I played BDO and it's horrible, so is the combat. How you can even begin to say it's better just debunks your whole story. Also, WoW...lol. I played for 10 yrs so I think my point is valid when I say Wow isn't even in the same universe as ESO. talk about a game that gave birth to a generation of sissy, instant gratification gamers....

I tried out BDO and I wasn't impressed either. The questing was boring and the combat felt very repetitive. It also had a lot of very annoying game play elements (such as having to run back to my box all the time to reduce my weight or trying to find a safe spot to park my horse so it doesn't get eaten).

The OP is right though in the sense that the combat animations themselves were quite good. But I don't play a game to look at pretty animations. It's interesting and fun game play that keeps me coming back to a game. BDO also has an insanely convoluted interface design that is likely to overwhelm anyone on their first attempt to play it.

Just wanted to say that in 2018, nothing changed and the combat is as bad as ever.
I would've preferred it to be tab target and feel great than be this hybrid that it is now and feel all floaty.
I use 2 handed swords and it feels like I am swinging a piece of wood when I auto attack.
Also the jump animation... lol... horrible.
I jumped to GW2 and FFXIV, just to get some good combat.. it's hard to keep playing a game that has such a bad combat.
Even combat in skyrim was better.

I wish ESOs combat was more like other MMOs with actual skill cool downs and such

Ive been playing Tera on my crap PC lately waiting for its console release while not the best looking game or MMO the combat in the game feels smooth enemies actually telegraph 1 shot like attacks more consistently( I can't even count how many times ive just Insta died for no reason in ESO since many 1 shot moves in ESO arnt even telegraph before hand)
and there's built in combos so you kinda know what skills to use while not as fast paced as ESO it just feels good to play a more traditional MMO

@RebornV3x I too await the Tera release, as well as numerous others that I have spoken with. Console players will finally receive yet another proper MMO, besides Final Fantasy and Neverwinter. DCUO, GTAO, MHW, and ESO may be classified as MMO’s. However, they lack the things which truly classify them as true MMO’s in my opinion. Games like: GW2, WoW, Tera, BDO, FF, NW, Eve, AA, etc. are what come to mind. Those are all what MMO’s should feel like (to a degree).

It’s kinda is like this. You don’t view Pokémon as a JRPG, even though it is 1 (even down to its very core and turn-base mechanics). When you think of JRPG’s, you think of: Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Persona/SMT, Disgaea, Suikoden, Breath of Fire, etc. It’s that type of thing.

I actually rather enjoy the combat in ESO. It's one of the reasons I stay, actually.

At first it was so minimalist as to be jarring. I came from other MMOs where there didn't seem to be enough action bars to cover all the abilities and items and things needed. In those games, it was all actionbars, all the time, ALL THE SCREEN. Most battles i spent looking at my action bars making sure to click the right thing. Boss battles were harder because of having to watch to click the right thing amongst the ENDLESS ACTIONBARS while paying attention to the mechanics of the fights.

I love ESO's minimalist actionbar/quickslot setup. I love that interrupts, heavy attacks that regain resources, light attacks, and blocking aren't tied just to skills. I love that mechanics cues are given all along: it's not just bosses where the graphics show where the knockdown charge is, or that only bosses have frontal cone attacks, etc. It's all along, so you learn to block, roll dodge, interrupt, etc all through leveling, not just in 'boss fights' or harder, group content. I spend less time looking at my actionbars for this or that thing (its all only 12345 Q R `, and easy to change out skills between fights) and more time actually being engaged with the battle.

The skills system where I can build whatever whackadoodle build I want and no set path or real 'skill tree' means I can think a bit about what would be fun, what I need for my playstyle, and what I want for whatever content I am doing. Mixing with armor sets and abilities leaves a lot of creativity that other games squish with those special sets being endgame only, and skills being railroaded down a class path, limited skill tree, or only available at certain levels. I can build whatever I want, be it sing or suck.

I find it really refreshing compared to other games out there.

+1 to this, its a game i play to enjoy myself, i do not need micro management of animations..

Best game combat is kingdoms of Amalur anyway, way better than Dark Souls..

    *snip*

    Totally agree!
I wont be opposed to more fluid animations for abilities, sure.

But overall I play ESO because of the class-building and the combat feels much more alive and interactive than other MMOs.

I remember watching the announcement trailer for Guild Wars 2 and they had this clip showing a guardian holding up their shield and blocking arrows and I literally lost my ***. I was so hyped and remember my reaction along the lines of "zomg, no way, action combat like in single player games?!" And then I actually got to play, and no, you don't get to block with your shield. It was an ability called Shield of Absorption that you could activate once every 24 seconds. Once every 24 seconds, I got to block....yaaaaay?

Don't disagree that animations could be more exciting. But otherwise, the combat in ESO is much more dynamic than any other MMO I've played.

I know what you mean.. The lack of that "sweet and spicy animation" that connects to the target. the "ohhh yeah" moments that give you the asmr of hitting the target.. The heavy "impact" feeling that makes you go on frenzy mode while fighting. The "crushing heavy strikes" that makes your adrenaline rush. Yeah I hope to see that in the future "if" they revamp the combat. That would be nice.

Neverwinter despite being a cash grab does have more fluid combat... this is the issue of weaving and animation cancelling... aesthetically eso combat is horrible.

Yeah i gotta agree that combat is terrible on a very fundamential level. It is one of the reasons i regulary take long breaks from the game. I really love exploration and questing in ESO. Stories are good, art in this game is so incredible that it makes me want to just walk around and enjoy the scenery, but combat...i get fed up with this boring and clunky combat very fast sometimes.

Combat is the very reason why I don't play this game anymore. Too few abilities, needs more active skill coodowns, Animation canceling does not belong in this game. Needs more variety when it comes to weapons in pve and pvp. Game use to be more about skill, now it's about what sets you have and what class you are stamnb, stamden.

You consider the combat in ESO wonky?

You must never have played Skyrim.

As someone who has found the combat in Oblivion being one of the better combats in the Elder Scrolls games, ESO's combat is far from a travesty to me. I'd probably put it somewhere between Skyrim and Oblivion actually, so I guess ultimately it really ain't that terrible to me.

Also my girlfriend got back in to the game after being away for a while, and she seems to find the combat to be quite alright. At least, I think that is what she feels about it, I should ask her (She is having fun thoufh, that is the important part of it all)

But could it be a bit better? Sure, but the question is, how would you even try improving?
