Jumping in ESO

I’ll put this simply, jumping in this game needs a complete overhaul.

I love this game for a lot of reasons but I’ve never been able to get past how awful movement feels when I start jumping around, especially when I start dramatically descending to the ground after I land on a 4 ft high mushroom.

Aside from fixing the obnoxious issue involving how we fall around certain objects, I think of 2 suggestions that could potentially improve the way jumping feels.

1. Increase gravity, currently it feels like I’m on the moon when I jump, jumping needs to feel quicker.

2. We need to keep our momentum after we jump forward, not stop mid air when we jump during a sprint.

I know there’s a million and one issues plaguing the game right now, but we spend a lot of time moving around, and I’m confident a vast majority of the player base would greatly appreciate it if this got som attention in the future.

The sliding off items was added some time after launch, I don't remember exactly why but it was much more fun before that (running over roof tops, climbing mushrooms etc.)

I do agree it's clunky in the game and would like to see something better, however I don't think it's something they'll ever address because it does what's required.

Oh the amount of times I died in PvP because my character couldn't jump over a twig or a pebble on the ground despite jumping 5 feet into the air.

I agree. ESO’s jump mechanics could definitely use some attention. It is a clunky, clunky mechanic and really does impact immersion.

Nothing like moving along, trying to jump over an ankle-high rock, and suddenly jumping vertically in place 3 times before finally making over the rock...

I also dislike how jumping works. To me it feels like the character is nearly weightless. You bounce off things like a balloon. I also have problems with "sticky feet". When I press space to jump on many terrains the jump will not go. And I won't get started with jumping in pvp lol

Not going to happen. This would require a complete rewrite of the base code, and it looks like it was taken from a Bethesda game, which as always had jumping problems.

The reason: this game doesn't have vertical ascending mechanics. Basically put: nothing can go directly straight up or down.

Test this out. Find a crate in the game. Stand next to it, then jump (be in 3rd person). Note what the character actually does when it "jumps": they lift their legs and raise.

Now, while standing next to the crate, try jumping on the crate. Can't do it, can you? You need a "running start" in order to jump on the crate because jumping requires mechanics based on a curve.

If you watch as you jump, just as the mount video above shows, all our "jumping" is on a curve!

This allows us to jump higher than what we can do just standing and jumping.

I'd love to have actual jump mechanics in the game, but until Bethesda fixes it on their end, ZoS ain't touching it in their game.

Side note: this is why we can't go vertical in Bethesda games either. Climb a ladder? HAHAHA. Have a loading screen instead.

It’s because it’s tied to WASD movement, which is always stiff and requires a push forward a microsecond after a jump key is pressed. It’s somewhat better on controllers, but still not great.

Bad jumping physics/animation awards go to:

    2. Rift
    1. Skyrim

ESO's jumping physics/animation, while not perfect, is sufficient. Could it be improved? Sure. Would it be a good use of developer resources? No.

All modern MMOs should have climbing, scaling, shifting along ledges, walking along edges, hand over hand moving while clinging, etc., etc., etc. You couldn't tomb raider me enough with these features, would increase immersion by boatloads.

i think that should be looked into at some point but there are some much larger concerns for the devs out there than this

Agreed. You can barely call it a functional jump. Funny story, I had been playing warframe for quite a while, went back to ESO (after not playing for a while as well) and the shock was hilarious. The feeling was parallel to going from a superhero on steroids to a 75 year-old with hemorrhoids.

The 1st point Im not sure about. If gravity were higher it would be more difficult to jump over stuff, which would require changing alot of places where you suddenly wouldn't be able to jump over. I think this would hurt gameplay and require alot of manual changes from the devs all over the game world. Not worth the time investment imo, and jumping height isn't that bad really.

I agree with the 2nd point. It always feels weird to get slowed down when jumping during sprint. That's not how sprinting usually works, and I see no reason to it. The fix should also be easy for ZOS to implement, just don't slow character artificially down during jump. If it works on a mount why not on foot?

you are all lucky if you can jump at all in ESO.

since the game release that i rarely can jump by just clicking one time on space. usually i need to press space at least 2 times for the mount to jump.

in the first year i thought that it was a problem on my laptop keyboard. then later i tried the game on a desktop with many different keyboards and i was rarely able to jump by just pressing one time on space. sometimes it work, mostly after the first jump, but it's completely random.

last year i start playing in a new laptop and still facing the same problem with jump. i assumed that it was a bug in the game, but i asking some friends on the game and guilds, and i never found anyone else with this problem. a few months ago i decided to install ESO on a freshly installed systems, and it's still very very rare for the mount to jump just in one click.

now i assumed that it is some kind of limitation on my account a gave up trying to fix it.

meanwhile i got used to start clicking a few times on space before i need to jump :)

I remember jumping against certain objects in the game, like the sign in Riften outside the forge and bank, was like rubber and would bounce you back a good distance. Some objects would launch you into the air. All that stopped about the time they made it where you slid off certain items like roofs or mushrooms.

Jumping is definitely a sloppy mess at times. I hate when I push up against a small knee high wall then it takes 3 or 4 jump attempts to get over it because I just slide across it with no forward momentum over and over.

**Sigh** Jumping, like combat, requires practice... I had trouble at the very beginning, but I bought some crates, barrels, and boxes and set up a little training course in one of my guildhall's back yard. I notice a difference when questing with new guild members, in that it takes them 3-4 attempts to jump over an obstacle... whereas with practice some obstacles can be cleared on the first try....

if jumping is a problem in pvp they could just removed completely that ability on cyrodiil a fix it on pve. it doesn't make any sense to keep a bug in the game that is ruining the fun of most players just because it's useful for some players on pvp.

I've always thought that jumping shouldn't pull you out of sprint, in fact you should be able to do a longer jump while sprinting, and come out of sprint when you land.

Personally I always fopund it most vexing that sprinting uses stamina, and jumping does not... enter the PvP bunnyhoppers! So annoying to watch...

But then, I also resent how you can swim in full plate mail and not sink like a stone, or have no stamina cost for swimming in soggy mage robes...

I would love to see thoce things done for ESO, and then add an "athleticism" world skill line that helps people there if they have skill points to spare...

Buuut I guess that's little roleplayer ole me. Most gamers would hate that, since they want to have it easy in the game...

Hmmm... maybe it to balance, they allowed people to step over -small- obstacles -without- having to jump on foot and mounted?? :p

Wish jumping wasn't required, because you can get stuck on twigs, small stones, or even door steps.
Even if you can make a jump (when you press the button) you bounce around like a balloon.
Sometimes I don't even jump, but I leave the ground because the dock, or stoop is not flat with the ground.
Or my mount stops dead if it encounters a dip in the ground, yet some trees and bushes I can run right threw.
Then there is that invisible wall thing...

Here is a quick vid of my jumping issues.

How many times have I been jumping straight when all of a sudden I drift sideways and off a cliff to my death?

How many times have I been running away from guards only to not be able to jump a wall?

How many times have I found myself in a sticky situation and unable to dodge roll because of a twig?

    I dunno, but it's a lot.

This. I can recall at least twice that they have nerfed jump height, early beta, and momentum, around TG update, to get to where we are now. This is largely on purpose.
