Lets talk about reporting players

Everyone should be treated the same way for the same things they do. This not happening is an issue.

But this is a game rated 18+, so everyone is mature enough to just solve the issue themselves by blocking people that annoy or offend you. If they keep on following you and spamming emotes and what not you can report them for harassment or something. If enough people block you and the whole chat turns silent over time for you it'll send off a message as well. It takes less then 5 seconds to ignore someone in game. I don't know how voice chat on consoles works though. I guess it mutes them?

On consoles they can still see you .. it doesn’t help much unless they get a block from the actual platform

If they can still see and follow you around after it I suggest just ignoring them for a whole (after blocking them ingame). If they continue to follow you and be a toddler you can report them for harassment. Best is usually to add a small video and send it to Zos. That might insure actual action from Zos's part a bit more.

That’s the issue. You can send it to ZOS all you want , but nothing is ever done .

I’ve seen the same guy who argues that the life of 1 man is worth 52 women and the non-white races are severely inferior at least 4 days out of the week in chat in Vvardenfel or Alik’r every day.
I’ve reported this racist, sexist, bigot every time I’ve seen him get uppity - I know other people do too.

I’m fairly sure all I’ve done is help keep the job of whomever deletes those reports and clears that cache secure and relevant.

An average stroll through Auridon tells you reports for scumbaggery don’t work.

I just don't understand why this guy says the N word to practically everyone he interacts with and isn't banned but if someone else says something they get banned. That is what I am wondering about.

If you're on consoles it might have to do with Sony or Microsoft sometimes banning people for a while, or perhaps their account got banned for a little overall on Xbox Live or PSN. Could also just be that Zos doesn't really check all of them and that one guy just got lucky (or one didn't).

Its on PC. IDC about whether it is right or wrong that is not what the discussion should be about. It is about the enforcement of rules. This guy has been reported by sooooo many people but nothing has been done and then others are reported for saying something else and they get a warning/suspension.

That's why I think Zos should at least give a response to reports being made within some workable timeframe. If you're on console just report their actual account >:)

The reports getting send is probably also behind an RNG system

Perhaps ZoS should post a clear guidelines on reporting procedures? (which report category covers which offenses, what evidence should you include with that report, and certain mechanics like does the report button conserve its own evidence if clicked in chat)

And lets be real here: There is no freedom of speech in a private venue. The owners are indeed free to remove people from the premises for saying something the owners don't like. Whatever disagreements or opinions they would like to claim, this is not the place. This is a gaming service, not a social or political forum; They are free to remove you if they find you making their other customers uncomfortable.

Pretty much this. I never understood the act of reporting players anyway, especially over something harmless such as words?

As Ive said before, I am not ZOS playground monitor. If they want to pay me and give me a GM title in game, then maybe my attitude may change. But until then..

It's more of a question of laws of society. There's things you should and should not do in an evovled society. Also good citzenship to help enforce general well fare of everyone.

Coming from a console point of view here (mostly because I’m tired of repeating myself) ZOS doesn’t enforce as well as Microsoft or the fine folks at PlayStation do and that is a problem . If you don’t have an issue with hate speech that speaks for you individually , but the rest of us don’t want to see it . You want people to be protected by freedom of speech so you don’t report ? Does that also include hate or just whatever is convient to you depending on your mood ? It’s a game and we all are here to enjoy it . Hate speech should not be tolerated and should be handled . If you don’t want to report because it’s not “convient for you to go out of your way” you are the problem . We all just want to enjoy the game we like to play without the hate . Anyways , enjoy your night everyone , and happy gaming.

I was harassed non-stop for a solid 3-4 month and nothing happened. If ZOS would have come up with a real ignore system (like WoW where you ignore someone and no longer see them in game) it would be a lot better. I could block what they say but they'd just come to where I was and stand on my toon and dance or do other emotes. ZOS never did anything. I have to avoid whole areas now.

I was banned for 3 days for calling a guy a fa@@ot and he started the fight with me and called me stuff too.

Something like this is unacceptable. This is more than saying a bad word in zone for ones. I don't get why it's only a verbal ignore in this game either, since you can actually already get placed in different instances within the same zone already (had it with friends before). It shouldn't be hard to implement that.

If you said it in LoL and they see the chat log, one use of those racial slangs can be a perm ban

If you want someone to take you serious report it on Xbox because Microsoft obviously cares.

I'm on PC so we can only report to zos but it is funny that microsoft cares more

I know the people you're talking about. Ran into a few back when we dueled in Wayrest.

ZOS doesn't seem to be very even-handed with the application of their own rules. It's disappointing.

    No company is.

Like most actions of customer service, it ultimately depends who gets the complaint. Most people, dont care. Like one in a thousand will.

At the very least that seems to be the case. The response from CS can vary wildly.

I think ZOS goes out of its way to avoid banning players. It seems to take a death threat on PC/NA. There have been some infamous trash talkers who didn't get removed until they went that far.

I think that enforcement seems uneven because people who are banned for reasons they don't want to admit to will instead say it was something else such as harassment.

Keep reporting 'em, it's gotta stick someday. People absolutely have the right to say whatever they want without being stopped...in THEIR space. Not so much in a shared leased area, where the company that owns it gets to determine what sort of behavior they want to happen there. That has nothing to do with individual freedom of speech and everything to do with what kind of patrons they want to encourage to stay and spend money.

The speech reflects on the person. A good person does not use bigoted slurs. A company that does not want bad people in their game bothering normal people will ban those people so as not to drive normal paying customers away by allowing too much trash to accumulate.

Its a known fact that zos dont ban people for real stuff in game 99% of the time. Ive reported people for this same thing, along with dozens of others with tons of evidence, and they're still here today... And not just saying the word, because that i dont really take issue with, but purposely calling people it in a *** way to try and be a scumbag.

Anyway zos bans people when there is enough outcry in the community. Something like the asylum glitch. Stupid glitch that got 100+ people perma banned with no appeals.. But when it comes to things that actually matter? Nothing.

All I’m saying , as I have said , is I agree with the OP . ZOS needs to do a better job at reinforcing their own guide lines . The only thing I’ve disagreed with is people letting hate speech/ bullying go because it doesn’t “concern them” so they don’t care to report it . Regardless if one person or ten people report an incident they should be looked at equally. If you want to debate that , I’m all for it and will debate it in a civil conversation with you. Hate speech should not be tolerated ; period .

Guys guys guys it is pointless to argue about the whether it is right or wrong to use certain words. ZOS has a policy and we all have to adhere to that policy whether we personally agree with it or not. My point is the lack of equal punishment.

If ZOS bans the word zergling because it offends people who pvp in large groups then I may not like it, but I will adhere to the policy because they have the right to make those decisions. The problem is some people are seemingly getting away with their words that are against the TOS while others are not. I don't want to name shame here but I assure you this player has been reported by 10+ people for their numerous racist and homophobic remarks. Why is no action taken against him while others are suspended or banned off of such behavior.

I agree, I'm only trying to build some understanding between people so we can avoid pointless conflicts that can be solved by talking.

On the subject of enforcement, I think it would help to be more transparent about the process as much as their privacy policy allows.

    For example:
    - Post guidelines on how to report, what constitutes a reportable offence, categories of offence, evidence to be included etc.
    - Explain generally how the reporting system works, for example, who receives the report, what standards are applied to the report, any oversight to the people evaluating the reports, etc

Now, I don't know if they would bother doing this, but that would be my suggestion to improve at the very least public perception of how ZoS enforces their rules.

If I have to report someone for zone chat language, I'll screenshot it and send it in attached the email ZOS sends.

More often, I'm reporting certain names with a note like "Is this appropriate?" and figure ZOS can decide whether or not something needs to get changed.

Whenever I start playing a new MMO, first thing I do once I log into the world is look to see if there's a way to disable /zone chat.

That was a lot to catch up on.

It's a shame ZOS doesn't seem to act fast on the use of slurs in their games. Whilst I understand the idea of "mute them" for some things I don't think derogatory terms should get a pass and be allowed.

Other MMO games I have played have been super quick and strict on the use of words in zone chats when players smack talk each other or are just goofing around. It's fine to smack or trash talk (IMO) but there is a line on what wording is used.

All I can say is report them and if you feel your ticket is not being addressed you could always try reaching out to ZOS staff on the forums via a PM.
