Lets talk about reporting players

“It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so *** what." - Stephen Fry
In some regards that's true. However that should never be an excuse to allow people to use slurs or hate speech.

Its on PC. IDC about whether it is right or wrong that is not what the discussion should be about. It is about the enforcement of rules. This guy has been reported by sooooo many people but nothing has been done and then others are reported for saying something else and they get a warning/suspension.

How do you happen to know the reasons why others are suspended or warned ? ZOS doesn't discuss nor disclose disciplinary actions. Many people are suspended for valid reasons (that they're very well aware of) but still pretend and claim that they've done nothing but very minor infringements. Yeah, that may include your best friend. And mine.

Someone once said, "In our century, we've learned not to fear words."
I wonder whatever happened to that sentiment. Probably, it went the way of the dodo when they started equalizing the majority down instead of equalizing the minorities up, thus ending the era of "we shall overcome" and introducing the era of "we demand that someone overcomes it for us" :p

They're calling you ugly names - so what? It's nothing to be upset about. Whatever they call you, it says nothing about you and everything about them.

I am one who believes in the freedom of speech because I understand the dangers of governmental censorship.

That being said I also regularly report players for "infractions" of the Code of Conduct as created by ZeniMax
2.5 You may not harass, threaten, embarrass, or cause distress to another customer or guest using ZeniMax sites and Services. This includes but is not limited to verbal attacks, unwanted messaging, personal attacks, stalking or any other undesired behavior used to cause discomfort or disrupt another customer's experience. At all times users will refrain from attacking Age, Race, Disability, Sexual Orientation, National Origin, Pregnancy, Gender or any other protected category under Federal or Maryland State law.

2.6 Users will not transmit or facilitate distribution of content that is harmful, abusive, racially or ethnically offensive, vulgar, sexually explicit, defamatory, infringing, invasive of personal privacy or publicity rights, or in a reasonable person's view, objectionable. Hate speech is not tolerated at any time.

2.7 You may not disrupt the flow of chat in chat rooms, message forums or games with vulgar language, abusive behavior, multiple key returns or posting large images in an attempt to disturb other users. Spamming, flooding [posting repetitive text], bumping and any other disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.

All that being said There is a massive difference between free speech in America and the CoC that ZeniMax established.

America is the country I live in and I fought to protect the right of free speech (among other various things). It doesn't mean I have to agree with everything someone says when using that but it does allow me (under normal circumstances) to provide my conflicting views.

ZeniMax is a game and while I do pay to enjoy cerrtain content it is ulitmately a privilege to play and they hold the right to revoke that privelage any time they desire even if it isn't due to an infraction.

And yes I agree with the OP that ZeniMax should be more consitant in their punishments of those infractions.

If I have to report someone for zone chat language, I'll screenshot it and send it in attached the email ZOS sends.

More often, I'm reporting certain names with a note like "Is this appropriate?" and figure ZOS can decide whether or not something needs to get changed.

Whenever I start playing a new MMO, first thing I do once I log into the world is look to see if there's a way to disable /zone chat.

I PVP. Cyrodiil zone chat is filled with equal parts useful information, useless information, and posturing zone generals. But that useful information is often necessary, so I put up with the rest.

It takes violating the TOS and Code of Conduct for me to report and screenshot someone's zone chat comments.

The reports on real cheaters get diluted to the point where its probably 10x harder to catch them because sore losers report good pvpers out of spite. I get whispers every day saying I cheat and that they and their entire guild/group will report me for cheating. Even if I knew how to cheat, I wouldnt do it, it defeats the point of playing a game. But this is a problem in every online game so...meh.

With how this thread has gone I can see why ZOS has problems consistently enforcing a ban, I bet for every act that actually needs a ban ZOS has to wade through 1000 inane reports like "Oh he used a curse word, ban him!" "Oh his name is farts-in-water, ban him!" "Oh he's not wearing any pants, ban him!"

If someone is harassing you or threatening you, then that person should get reported and banned. But I highly disagree with reporting everyone and their mother because they did or said something that you found offensive.

People need to learn that the world does not conform to their views and that there will be things they find offensive that others do not. More so people need to learn when to report something and when to brush something off, but wisdom is not something easily learned.

Does it break the TOS? Report it.
Does it bother you but doesn't break the TOS? Ignore List is your friend.

Its not that hard, if people would actually read the TOS and Code of Conduct we all say we read and agreed to.

Even for those, like me, who bothered to actually read it, it's hardly comprehensible and even if it was perfectly worded, it would leave a lot up to interpretation (just like any law).

With so many different social categories, cultures and generations gathered in one community, it's IMPOSSIBLE to clearly and objectively classify words or behaviours as "offensive" or not. And it also depends highly on the context.
So no, sorry, it is very hard. Impossible, even.

Then, if you think, in your interpretation, it breaks the TOS...report it and let ZOS sort it out? That's part of their job.

And no, I don't find it hard to identify prohibited behavior as listed below nor do I find it hard to understand the meaning of such prohibitions.

From the Code of Conduct: https://account.elderscrollsonline.com/code-of-conduct

We have recently removed a great number of inappropriate, baiting, and non-constructive posts from this thread. Because this discussion has derailed quite a bit, we have decided to close it down. If someone is behaving inappropriately in-game, then please use the steps in this article to file a report for our Customer Support team.

We would like to take this opportunity to remind you that, as stated in our Community Rules, we have a zero tolerance policy for hate speech in the official ESO community. Our definition of hate speech is prejudice or hateful comments, slurs, or statements that promote violence or intolerance toward others. Please keep this in mind so that our community can be a welcoming and safe environment for everyone to be a part of. Thank you for your understanding.
