I pulled the UESP page for all Dunmer names from Vvardenfell in TES 3: Morrowind.

I compiled a list of every surname and forename.

I wrote software to decompose the names into prefix-affix-suffix elements (based on common substrings and edit distance).

I selected elements that I liked a built new Dunmeri names from them.

    ...

    I don't recommend it.

I name most of my characters based on what I want to do with them and their abilities, along with their race, not lore friendly though.

    1. Stamina Nightblade Woodelf: Green Talon (male), named for poison/disease abilities and general forest lore, plus the character is on the AD Alliance.
    2. Magicka Dragon Knight Darkelf: Ash Dragon (male), mostly as a fire dragon knight.
    3. Magicka Warden High Elf: Icy Girl (female), Ice abilities and and usual high elf lore
    4. Stamina Nightblade Orc: Swift Gatherer (male), mostly meant for gathering mats
    5. Magicka Sorcerer Highelf: Thundering Bolt (male), bolt escape and lightning abilities
    6. Stamina Nightblade Khajit: Dark Moonshadow (female), mainly for pick pocketing and crawling in shadows
    7. Stamina Sorcercer Orc: Storm Mastery (male), based on storm master set and class ability boundless storm
    8. Stamina Dragonknight Nord: Black Inferno, based on dark talons ability and class

I have two characters with different naming
    1. Magicka Nightblade High Elf: Sir Salman (male), based on my pet name in real life
    2. Stamina Templar Imperial: Zulfiqaar (male), based on a legendary holy sword name

I usually check the list at UESP TES wiki for inspiration. You can see a list of every name used by npcs of any specific race classified by game of origin, gender, first or second name, as well as special entries for Argonian and Khajit who often have, for lack of a better word, gimmicky naming schemes, It's a pretty handy list, though can get tricky at times since the ESO section features some of the longest lists of names used..

But by looking at the different examples of names through the diffrent TES generations,, I either create a name that sounds as though it fits the scheme and is appropriate for my intention, or mix and match pieces of multiple names. I also often pick a surname and stick with it based on the race. For example all my Breton characters have the surname "Hawkhart", whereas my dark elves are "A'Daragon", my High Elf Magsorc, "Stormbinder"

I also have an Argonian Dragon Knight that I found quite tricky to name. I didn't like the standard argonian hyphenated names,

I ended up with "Khal-En'zar Verd'Ynox" or something such as that. My inspiration started with the fact that I wanted to embrace the (Green) dragon aspect of being a dragon knight, with the reptillian appearance of the argonian lending itself to the theme, bright green scales, yellow eyes, top of the head decked out with spikes-- Also considering that I enjoyed the argonian helmet style, at least the highest lvl variety of plate, which kind of looks like a crown and was sort of regal feel to it..

That being the case I wanted to go with a name that not only sounded Draconic, but also had words denoting Nobility/Royalty/Kingly status, actually looked at a D&D wiki for the names of "famous" (for lack of a better word) Green Dragons. I ended up finding something that, after slight alterations, allowing me to allude to the familiar terms of "Khan" and "Czar" for a first name.

The Surname was inspired in large part by the previously mentioned green dragon wiki resource, I noticed more than 1 green dragon had the presence of the term "nox"-- obviously alluding to noxious, poisonous gasses. This character was a stam DK, plenty of green fire.. So I felt that would be appropriate to added to the surname, and it felt like a pretty good closer, so I just needed something to preceed it.. Naturally my mind went to a reference to green.. verde in spanish. Hence Verd'Ynox

Oh and I really love the freedom of naming policy this game has. Ive played many games over the years. Not one of them has allowed such freedom in naming. So I really wanted to abuse my alotment of non alphabetical characters.

Just went with what I had on my mind while in character creation. First char is my gamertag. The second has something to do with things i like (Slash the summits), one is a band i was listening to at that moment (Spawn of Possession). My heavy attack Stam DK was meant to be sort of a barbarian, and with the heavy attacks being "smashing", i went with "Crushbert Destructoid". Only two of my toons are sort of, and probably by definition pretty un-canon, lore friendly: My Stam Sorc mule orc named "Orc is Sorc" is one day going to show these nosey high elves what Orcs can do with a bit of wind and fury! My Redguard Stamplar is named "Ai'kara Swordsong". My Argonian who does not exist anymore was called "Eats-his-loot". Most uncreative is my Magrsorc, called "Sorzenia"

A portion of the name of an inanimate object or someone that I'm reading about at the time combined with part of the prefix or suffix of an ES lore appropriate name from this list.

It's lazy, but wound up having a character named after paraffin wax and another named after Artemis.

    Long boring story...

It was 1998 and I had just installed Ultima Online. My 3 year old son was playing on the floor as I started the install and login process.

"Enter your character name." > Kevin...

Hmm...that doesn't sound very epic. So I ask my three year old "Give me a good name for a character." Without looking up, he mumbled something that sounded like "Dresek." So Dresek was born. I've used Dresek in every game since -- UO, EQ, DAOC, WoW, LotRO, DDO, etc. etc.

My alts all start with either Dres- or Drez-

    Dresgar

    Drezikhan
    Dresivir

I first had an idea what I wanted the toon to be, designed what they looked like, then I named them around that concept making sure the face matches the name.

VilniusNastavnik - MagSorc Electromancer DPS - Altmer (was nord)
The main is my standard gamer tag / character name.

Urog Blackfang - DK mercenary Tank -Orc
Built this one around Spellforce 2 style orc names. Wanted to go with something that matched the appearance of a pirate or bounty hunter.

Arwyn Winterlight - MagPlar Priest Healer - Breton
The Healer is the name I use for a lot of my Healer / Ice mage characters from the old spellforce Order of dawn / Breath of winter days.

    Ko'h Nehko'h - Stamblade sneakthief Archer - Khajiit
Forced and exaggerated Koneko. I may or may not be a closet weeb.

Elen Windsong - Stamsorc Aeromancer DPS - Bosmer
She's an elf, and an aeromancer. Enough said.

Harwyn Northwind - MagWarden Icemage DPS - High Elf
Wanted a name that was both elfy, and nordic at the same time. Needed to build around the thought that he is a halfbreed.

    Eats-Strange-Fungus - HealsTank Warden - Argonian
He likes shrooms. In all seriousness, he's a healer and warden's use fungus to heal.

Marik at-Divad - StamDK Fanatic DPS - Redguard - Work in progress
Marik - Wanted to go with a name similar to those on Assassin's Creed 1 and include some Redguard Lore friendliness.

    Other's I have killed off:
Adena Seraphina - MagDK Pyromancer - Dunmer
I just googled good names for fire mages, and found some words in latin and Slavic languages that fit a pyromancer. Translates roughly to bright fiery / burning one or something like that.
    Active Toons:
NA - VilniusNastavnik - Magsorc DPS - Altmer
    NA - Ko'h Nehko'h - Stamblade Archer - Khajit
NA - Arwyn Winterlight - MagPlar Healer - Breton
NA - Urog Blackfang - DK Tank - Orc
NA - Elen Windsong - Stamsorc DPS - Bosmer
    NA - Eats-Strange-Fungus - Magden HealzTank- Argonian
NA - Harwyn Northwind - MagWarden DPS - High Elf

I would either use a lore friendly name generator until I found a name I liked or, in the case of cultures in TES games where names are somewhat more specifically given based on the individual's personality and place in society (such as Khajiit with their suffixes and prefixes) I would put in a little more care. (Nayya-ko, ko being the suffix for mages, so a Khajiiti mage, sister of Miyya-ko daughter of Kala-ko (also yes that is a cat pun))

My main "Ishtrir" is a reworking of a rp character of mine I had for ages. He looks almost unnervingly accurate. Unfortunately his first name, middle-name, last name and nickname were all already in use/unavailable. So I used the name of one of the planes of my self set up rp-world (I GM-ed) in has. The plane he used to rule over for a while. Ishtrir in my made up language (Just a page of words and some linguistic basics) basically translates as demon (ish) plane (trir).

Alt one: khajiit nightblade thief lass: "Edrice" ... by meaning from old english. Prosperous ruler

Alt 2: Argonian warden lass: "Catches-the-sun", because lizards are coldblooded, warm themselves in the sun and I thought it sounded nice, positive and happy. And I love summer and the sun. And it seems to match the naming conventions for argonians.

    That's it... no more characters

All of my characters have lore-friendly names, whether I got them from the UESP or from other sites with lore, like my Argonian is named Xhiak-Qoa'cthuei, and I found an English to Jel (the Argonian language) "dictionary" and that helped.

My altmer is named after the Greek Titan of Intellect.

Any Dunmer I make has an original name that I make based on what's already available, with the last name "Antharys" because that's the house they belong to. (It's not a real Dunmer house, I made it for my Dunmer) Also, they're mostly Telvanni too.

My bosmer is named from words and names from other games and elf-related content. "Euride" from Euride Gorge in FF13, and "Skywise" from Elfquest.

My Khajiit, Suunleth-dar, "Suunleth" is from FF13's Sunleth Waterscape, I added the u to make it sound more Khajiiti. (Suunleth like "Soon-leth")

And then for my Bretons, I use a babyname website and look for french names. Simple. The Breton's names in game are (at the current time period) French(ish) in origin.
(If I make a Nord, i use Nordic names. For Redguards, it's honestly the hardest race for me to name, but I use words translated from Arabic or from Persian. Imperials are easy enough, just use Roman mythology or Italian names.)

I have used Nahuatl several times as well in the past if it fit the character. I even used it to name a race in a book I helped write many years ago. Latin is the only language I use more as I feel it is easier to use in a broader range of characters.

Few of my characters have surnames. The first to get one was Djaevel Fireheart, a redhead Nord Dragon Knight. I had my heart set on Djaevel but it was taken and Fireheart seemed to fit.

I named one character after a friend of mine received her doctorate in sports medicine, though Doctor Jen is not a healer. She might be one day as she is a magblade.

One day when I was feeling 12 ish, I named a character after a plant that sounds a little risqué: Scarlett Firebush. I know, the plant has one "t". She's a redhead Breton Warden.

My two newest children are Petty Thievery and Drunken Brawls. Petty is a Bosmer Nightblade and Drunken is a Nord Warden. They live to grief any and all guards in Skyrim. Stealing and killing for fun and profit.

I have an Altmer Sorceress that is named after my wife's gamer tag (my nickname for her since 1989), and the rest of the names kinda just happened as I created them. I have a few names picked out for future characters but still don't know if they will ever be born.

Not an RPer either, but I’ve kept all my toon names lore-friendly.

When in beta, I saw a lot of discussion about the “any race, any alliance” option and how it would ruin people’s immersion having all these different races mingling about through any of the zones. I knew I was making a sorc and wanted the Altmer magika bonus, but my friends were all going to roll EP when we went live. Not knowing how serious people might be about an Altmer in EP, I made sure to create a plausible backstory for my Altmer explaining why she was aligned to EP despite being a High Elf. I even expanded on the backstory to include her Warden sister for when Morrowind came out; also keeping the new Warden’s name lore-friendly.
