Update 18: Gifting Crown Store Items

Ley

✭✭✭✭✭
This update also brings a brand new Crown Store feature: gifting. With gifting, you can purchase and send Crown Store items to your friends and allies, and you'll be able to easily track your sent and received gifts. Almost every item in the Crown Store can be gifted, but there are some conditions.
Does this mean selling/trading crowns for in-game currency is about to become a thing? Not a huge fan of the implications.

I wonder what the "conditions" are.

Thoughts?

You can probably do that via money anyway. I give you crown code/IRL monies, you give me gold monies. Makes it a little easier for the ESO+ crowns to go though.

Technically gifting already existed through customer service... But now it will be easier.

Will it be a thing? Well that's up to players. I personally won't.

Honestly, I'd be okay if people did this. The game is in need of a gold sink anyways.

I think a lot of suspicious activity will stick out like a canary in a nest of crows. I mean, if someone has received an insane amount of gifts from a number of people who just so happened to have had their first ever vMA clear, it's obvious the person receiving will have been selling runs for crown items. There's a number of other things to which would be blatantly obvious if ZoS are able to see every piece of activity.

There's a number of other things to which would be blatantly obvious if ZoS are able to see every piece of activity.

The question is, how much does ZOS care and do they consider it shady at all? If they have no problem with it, then it will be embraced by the community as another form of resource exchange. If ZOS comes out against it, you'll still see it happen, but behind closed doors and in outside chat rooms. Selling vMA runs is likely not cool, but that's already not approved of by ZOS for exchange of any current means. Adding gifting won't change that. It's all the standard gold and items that are perfectly fine to exchange between players right now that could be an issue if ZOS decided they don't like that sort of exchange for crown gifts.

Personally, I'd be happy if they fully legitimize the transaction by making the crown items tradable until opened instead of giftable. There is still a layer of trust involved when the trade doesn't happen simultaneously through a trade window. You may see whole new guilds pop up that are specialized in safe crown gift trading with brokers and ranks based on your successful transactions in the past.

My wish is to be able to gift/sell unwanted stuff like mounts or skins or emotes that you end up with. Or hell, gift them but I expect this'll be "direct from the store".

Need to think on this. On the surface, seems okay but...

Gifting Crownstore items in exchange for gold or any other in game service likely falls under the same umbrella as paying gold for trial carries. So it is fine under current ToS as long as there is no account sharing.

Couple things: The mounts etc aren't that big of an issue to think of. What is to me are these.

    1. Can you gift with the monthly ESO+ Crowns. I know of games that had both <TSW> and they basically removed the gift part from the free currency from the sub.
    2. Can you Gift DLC? That would mean a player with a sub can in effect buy a DLC for a non sub player. Not terrible for the consumer, but they might not like that. I am assuming items = non content though.

    Mounts_ShadowRiderSenche.jpg

The way it is described, you gift the item at the time of purchase so you could gift a crown crate or a pack of crates, but not a mount that is found inside the crates. A store purchasable mount would be fair game to gift at time of purchase. It's entirely possible that crown gem items could also be gifted at the time of purchase but that feels unlikely. Any items you currently have already bought for yourself would stay bound as they always were. Of course, we'd need to see the actual implementation to know for sure how it works.

I'm guessing that when you go to buy a crown item going forward, you'll have to select whether it's for you or a gift for someone else.

I highly doubt you'll be able to gift something that you've already unlocked in your own collections. I don't see the gifting being retroactive, only on new purchases.

Pretty sure by design it means, I can buy something and give it to another player in the account screen.....not buy something for an in game item that is trade-able.
But some items are consumables so ....guess we will see but id imagine it would be no different than buying exp scrolls that are account bound, we buy in the crown store and the item is sent to another account in the same way as if they purchased it.

Edits...after thinking about it more...I don't forsee the stretch the OP makes as its not suggested that the crown store items are changing functionality.

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. No. Guild Traders, Armour Repair and Outfit Station is more than enough lol.
Difficulty scaling is desperately needed. 9 years. 6 paid expansions. 25 DLCs. 41 game changing updates including A Realm Reborn-tier overhaul of the game including a permanent CP160 gear cap and ridiculous power creep thereafter. I'm sick and tired of hearing about Cadwell Silver&Gold as a "you think you do but you don't"-tier deflection to any criticism regarding the lack of overland difficulty in the game.

I'm glad they sat down and made this a finished part of the game, not something you could do if you begged Support and got the right rep. Because you could do this before, you just had to beg support and hope you got the right rep.

You beat me to making a post, but man, this is a scary subject. The potential for abuse is off the charts. They do mention some restrictions, but I dont see what you can possibly do to prevent people abusing this. I really dont mind this in theory, but it will get abused.

ZOS might have finally jumped the P2W shark with this one...

If you can track your sent and received gifts, they can too, and will be able to monitor suspicious activity/ suspected abuse of the system.

If it works the same way it does with the concierge ticket system, you should be able to give DLC as a gift. I have done this.

    Agreed.

I think it's important to note that I don't mind the idea of gifting crown items but the idea of crowns becoming essentially a second in game currency.

All I know is if I can give away stuff from my already existing collection, I have so many things that will be looking for new homes lol.

But for real, they could just allow you to do it one time and then have a 30/60/90 day cool off period before you can do it again.

Are people over-complicating this? I interpret this as gifting an item from the crown store to a recipient, just like you can now via the customer service concierge service.

That's exactly what it is and it's quite simple if taken for just that.

However, making crown items easily transferable to other players has huge effects for the economy of the game and there are potential abuses. I'd like to think ZOS was fully aware of this before implementing this new system on a much larger scale than it has been available previously.

You guys know that you can also already ask for rl money the same way? If you're stupid enough to send someone you don't know crown items and expect them to hold their end of the deal, I don't know what to tell you...

If I understand it correctly, you can only gift something that's currently available in the store to someone else, so no exchanging of prior items that are no longer available to buy in the store.

Meanwhile, I had hoped to finally be able to exchange some of the tons of mounts, pets and cosmetics that I have in my collection for something I'd actually want.

    Maybe eventually ..

The RMT aspect of it is honestly a bit silly.

Sure you could effectively trade gold for crown items, but that issue kinda breaks down if you look it.

But when you consider that there isn't really all that much you can do with crown store items things sorta break down. RMT works because a person can have a ton of bots working to make gold in a game that they can then sell off. There is no profit to be made in trading crown crates for gold.

There will be some of that stuff happening, but I don't see it being anywhere near the same level of issue as "GOLD4CA$H" spammers

I see the entire development not good for the game either. For me introducing some form of gifting like this is a rather shady thing, the border to P2W is getting very very close.

I hope this apply to crwon crate items too, at least the cheap ones, time to time i like a few costumes i see in the crown crates, but i dont buy crates because i cant get rid of the items i dont want, right now i have a few tattos, head accessories and costumes that i win with the free crates and i cant destroy the damn items.

    And this freak me out.

With this option i can send the items to my Guild Trader Boss, that way they can offer as a raffle prices.
