So about that 'smart' Megaserver...

I've been playing ESO with my partner for almost 3 years now. We are in the exact same guilds, and we literally do EVERYTHING in game together. Period.

Yet at least 70% of the time when we log in on our characters, or relog, we're put in different instances.

Why?

    It makes sense.
It most likely distributes the population as evenly as possible between instances.
This means that 2 people logging in at the same time are very unlikely to end up in the same instance, unless either:
    a) it's the only instance
    b) it's a recently created instance due to overpopulation of the existing ones

    But what's the issue?
That's what "Travel to player" is there for.

But since they were blabbering on about their smart megaserver at launch, I would have thought it would have learnt my partner and I play together and don't want to be put in different instances every day.

3 years played every day is like 1,000 logins. Takes maybe 20 sec to travel to player, That's like 5 and a half hours of time spent in a pointless loading screen! FIRST WORLD PROBLEM!

It's probably got something to do with how the game manages shards (as in, large instances, not the Templar ability). Probably no hard cap, but it won't put people into a capped zone unless they demand to go there.

One easy solution is just to log out in your home. To be honest, I don't notice this very often because 90% of the time, my character ends up somplace completely different after spending some time alone, so I need to port to a guild/friend when I want to do something with them anyway (unless it's in my house.)

    And smart it is.

But expecting it to learn the preferences and patterns of every single player over years in order to decide in which shard to put them... well, would you accept 30s more of load screen for every load screen in order to have that?

Cryptic (so, Star Trek Online and Champions) would prioritize friend and guild members when it tried to put you into an instance. It wasn't 100%, especially if you had friends in a filled instance (75 players, I think), but it did make the attempt. That said, because you could actually track instance population, and pick your instance, there were also hard population caps you couldn't exceed. You could see your friends in that version of Detroit, but you couldn't actually join them, because there were already too many superheroes running around in their world.

Near as I can tell, ESO doesn't hard cap instances, but the tradeoff is, ZOS doesn't let you see the overall population count (or how many instances currently exist). I think it still prioritizes putting you with friends and guildies, but it won't exceed the soft cap to do so.

This is likely not possible with the game in it's current guise. You are talking about AI here not smart technology. And that would mean a massive change to the coding which is not a megaserver issue.

As others have said it takes seconds to travel to another player so during this time give your partner a cuddle and you'll be back in the game in no time

Yes, seriously. Maybe you don't get it because no one wants to play with you.

I've had it numerous times with my boyfriend since I started playing five months ago. It's not a big deal, but a little annoying.

This game puts guild members together when it assigns the player to a particular version of the zone ('channel' per Nick Konkle), but I do not know if they prioritize friends. I doubt that it cares how many guilds are shared by two specific people, either. It just tosses each player into a guild-mate heavy place, but maybe not the same one.

But it is important to remember that 5 full guilds is a lot more than the cap on a zone. Guilds are split and are not all together.

Happens to me all the time too. There are 3 of us and if we don't make sure to all be in the same instance before we queue for dungeons or Cyrodiil then we always wind up with someone being invisible which is really annoying, especially in Cyrodiil.

To be fair it was designed by the same company that gave you a group finder that would put 7 people into your group for a 4 person dungeon. So smart is all relative.

That shouldn't happen in dungeons an Cyrodiil, since it's the same instance, even if you queued from separate instances or even different zones.
