You cant store it in your bank or mail them... why would you think putting them in the chest is ok?
You can put stolen items in a chest. Visit your local fence launder the items and into the chest they go.
The reason they are character bound (one of them) is so you can't use your best thief then send items to your novice thief to level legerdemain.
Another reason, keep you from sending that gold furniture recipe you just liberated from some unsuspecting souls pouch to another character so it is safe if you get caught liberating other items.

I don't see why they should be character bound.
Storage stolen items actually makes a lot of sense. That's the second thing a person would do after selling them to a fencer.
