Why 'DPS'? It's a 'DD', isn't it?

It was DPS in EQ1 17-18 years ago.

DPS stand for damage per second.
    DD stand for dead duck.

Whenever I see DD I think of destroyers, not people that specialise in dealing damage in an MMO.

When it comes to Damage Dealers, what matters most is their Damage Per Second, and I guess people just find it a teensy bit easier to say out loud DPS than DD.

Who cares? The bigger problem is whether or not your DPS/DD/whatever-you-want-to-call-them can actually deal a sufficient amount of damage.

Actually, wondering about the accuracy of MMO-slang (or any sub-culture's slang for that matter) implies taking some distance from it and compare it to real life, general existing communication systems and languages.

Realizing that saying "DPS" instead of "DD" makes no sense is actually closer to "getting a life" than saying "who cares as long as you pull 30K+".

    Wrong again.
DD is your role - damage dealer. What you do is - again - DD : deal damage.
DPS is the measurement unit - the speed at which you do it.

Just as interesting - on NA people type x to join a group and on EU it's +

I noticed that too; in EU zone chat it would be 'DD LFG...' instead of 'DPS LFG', which makes more sense come to think of it. Another little tidbit I noticed was people saying 'bb' in the end of group runs for 'bye-bye' in EU (in addition to 'ty', etc.), whereas in NA it's usually 'gg'.

In ESO, there seems to be a split between NA server which uses DPS, and EU server which uses DD (at least on PC).
GM - Ghost Sea Trading Co - NA PC

Epona was a Romano-Celtic goddess dating back to around 1800 to 2000 years before computer games were invented.

I've literally never heard the term "DD" in ESO until about late 2017, I do encounter it more often now, but still only a fraction of the amount people say "DPS"
You just going to stand there like a lemon?

yes, DPS (damage per second), DD (damage dealer), so the proper name for the role should be DD, not DPS.

but it gets pretty much confused in the game, so DPS is used in the same meaning as DD

So you're only interested in DD's then? Because a Level 1 can be a DD. Technically a tank and healer are also DD's, because they're doing some damage.

DPS at least generally assumes a (DD with a) certain rate of damage, which is usually more desirable than damage alone.

A level 1 can deal 10,000,000 damage, but expect to be there a while.

Granted, you could specify the requirement as an addition or leave it implied.

I'm guessing if the terminology has you that worked up, the actual event will make you lose your mind.

EDIT: It's much the same reason why DVD recorders aren't called DVD-RR's (even though they Record on DVD-R's). The terminology on either side indicates the function. The grammatical correctness is irrelevant.)

As long as you understand what is being said, what difference does it make? This is the only game I've ever seen use DD, so people coming from, literally, any other game probably won't be using it. Adapt, or adhere to your rigid ideas, just don't bash for not conforming to YOUR way of thinking.

    :) toon is more stupid.
It don't matter much but standard in zone is asking for DD:
LFM 2 tank, 1 heal, 4 DD nAS.

Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

DPS is the older and correct term. It came first, it wins. End of discussion.

DD sounds like something from a child's favorite, obscure, video game that he really really wants to catch on.

    But it won't.
