Do you play in first person or third person?

I mostly play in first person but switch to third sometimes
I played Skyrim in 3rd person exclusively and for any mmo I also stick to 3rd person. I also play vehicle combat action games and strategy games, in 3rd person or zoomed out. Despite the different genres, I apply the same view logic to them.

Personally, I found the expanded field of view and the ability to see to the side and even a bit behind of whatever I'm controlling to be extremely useful. I think it helps my situational awareness by letting me see incoming attacks, proximity dangers, and nearby characters/units. As a plus I can see my own character's outfit; or in other games personal camos and decals.

To me it is easier to estimate distances in 1st person mode - with melee combat I have the problem in 3rd person, that I overestimate the distance from the opponent and get too near - sometimes even on top of it - and then the attack fails - this does not happen when I am using 1st person.

Edit: I guess that is as well a matter of zoom in 3rd person - my camera might just be too near to my character.

First person as much as possible. Using any mount makes "always first person" kind of impossible.

theres an addon that lets you use first person while mounted. it's quite nice.

I seem to recall that Skyrim wasn't very good in 3rd person. Fallout 4 isn't, either.

3rd person unless I'm trying to get to an item to pilfer that is hard to target, then I'll flip to 1st person for a moment.

When I'm sneaking, particularly if I have to pay close attention to the details of the area, I zoom my camera in close but still not quite in 1st person.

I play in third person because I like to see my character, but I zoom in pretty close within the 3rd person POV unless I'm in a dungeon and need to watch out for AoE mechanics.

For other Bethesda games, though, like Skyrim and Fallout, I tend to play in third person until I enter combat, at which first person has been a lot more comfortable.

As others have stated, I use 3rd 99% of the time. Honestly can't stand 1st person perspective in games anymore, which is funny to me because for years it's all I played. Woke up one day and the sight of just seeing a floating gun or a pair of hands really bothered me. So much so I immediately dismiss any game that uses it exclusively.

Mostly in third, but I'll switch to first for screenshots. Gotta have my nice screenshots without my character in them... But she does get a chance to be in them too sometimes.
What was this about again? Oh yeah, third person. I play in third person ^_^"

I prefer playing in third since it gives me a better view of stuff that's going on, especially in raid situations. That and for some reason playing in first in this game makes me a little motion sick and playing around with the first-person settings helped only marginally. The only times I use first is when I'm doing some tricky jumping, checking out someone's skin/outfit/gear, or placing housing furnishings.

I play mostly in 3rd person with my fov adjusted, the only times I seldom switch to 1st person is either when I'm going thru dungeons looting things it helps make it easier to see things I may have missed in 3rd person. The last thing I ever really switch to 1st person for is during some fights that require me being able to see the different moves the boss makes before using a certain skill other that these things I don't see any point to play in 1st person especially with how much the view limits your fov .[ /i]

My question to you all who use 1st person is, how do you go about doing end-game content or PvP? I couldn’t imagine doing VMA or VSO in 1st person. Let alone any of the DLC 12-Man Trials. I’d probably get extremely nauseous, and or headaches from the camera angles.

This is pretty interesting, we're really liking the reasoning behind why you chose your personal view.

It's cool as well that some of you can flip between each to observe details or gain some tactical advantage.

There are lots of great thoughts in this thread, keep it up!

hopefully the whole destruction staffs being held like spears thing has peeked interest? have threads up from way long ago with picture evidence that's still relevant to this day

So how do you play ESO?

3rd person, unless I want to do a screenshot then I almost always go 1st person.

Generally, I prefer 3rd person 95% of the time. I like being able to see more of my environment. especially while in combat. Also because I enjoy actually seeing my character. I spent time designing it, and outfitting it, I actually want to see it.

But if i'm just messing around in game, then sometimes, I'll indulge in first person for fun. But never when doing dungeons or quests or combat.

3rd person always, because of pretty obvious advantages, like better field of view ( this in my opinion is the most important) meaning that you can judge better where your enemy is going, and where you should go, better judgement of distances.

3rd person is just objectivly better, it allows you to be a far better player.

Games like this where performance is very important, they are just not built for first person, there is a reason why there is not a single competitive mmo where you play in first person, unless you are forced to.

    This is not like skyrim.

I guess i should have picked the occasionally i use 1st person, but really, that almost never happens.

Played in first person on my first character when I was looking for the immersive experience. Until I understood the broad 360 degree view 3rd person offers. Never again.

    I for one - simply don't.
I can imagine that for those activities, 3rd person is preferable. Fortunately, there are tons of other things to do in the game. :)

Third person. ESO wasn't designed to be played in first person, and it shows big time.
I have to max out the FoV to make first person playable, and that makes everything look horrible.

I will occasionally switch to first person for the lulz, but it's not a good experience.

If ESO didn't have 1st person I would never have started playing. No ifs, buts or maybes, I must have 1st person. Lack of 1st person is why I hardly ever play my WW.
