Copying another player's @ name using different variations of lower case L and capital i

So it is possible (as far as I'm aware) to use some variation of capital i and lower case L (l and I) to copy another person's account name if it is in block caps. This has been done by a player in game and reported (not naming anyone) and the person is still playing the game like nothing happened, after like 2 weeks+

Is this not classed as impersonating another player? Or is it acceptable? I would have thought it was against the rules but maybe I'm mistaken...

Also sorry if this thread isn't allowed for discussing disciplinary actions or something. I was just curious if I'm missing something

This is a fairly unusual situation. Another classic trick is to swap out the Os for 0s, but that only works if the O is capitalized.

Anyway, if you're seeing someone who's impersonating you, and harassing people, report them. Be sure to make special note of their name in the report, and how it's suspiciously close to yours. If you're seeing someone impersonating someone else, there might not be much you can do.

I mean, in over a decade of playing MMOs, I've seen this happen maybe twice. So, it's not exactly a common situation.

It's not myself they are impersonating. And they were reported with all the right information to look into it. The player had a different @ name before (so most likely used the account name change service ZOS offers via support) so it wouldn't even be that difficult for them to verify that they are impersonating. I'm not even bothered about them doing it, it just struck me seeing them still walking around like nothing happened. I dunno

I've seen this on ps4 na recently. Zone chat is flooded with scum spamming it saying they'll buy all sorts of mats like potent and corn flower for really low prices "COD FOR INSTANT PAYMENT". One of them actually took the name of a rather respected player and tried to make it look like she was the one buying low. I would assume in hopes people would sell to them thinking it was the real person.

    Odd scenario but it happens.

That sucks. I find it strange that ZOS picked a font which the capital i and lower L look identical. It allows scammers or people who want to cause 'harm' to another player the perfect method of doing so. I've actually seen it done quite a lot in other MMO's

What baffles me the most though is that reporting said impersonator seems to have no effect in ESO

Could just be coincidence, I suppose.
Like how I wanted a particular name for my nightblade, and chose a weird name that I didn't think anyone else would have thought of ... only the name was already taken.

It is not a coincidence. It is a player who is doing it in an ironic way in order to try and effect the other player. I cannot disclose anything else but it is 100% NOT a coincidence. I'm not quite that stupid

I think he was pretty calm.

smh at people who say calm down when they themselves have used 2 expletives, a calm down and some snark in one line in reply to plain, non-emotive statements.

ZOS would care if you were using the name of an entertainer, representative, or other high-profile individual as your own personal account name, as that would be grounds for impersonation. But as it's clearly stated that ZOS owns all account and character names, as well as the account itself, you can't lay any ownership claim if somebody's using an account name similar or nearly identical to your own.

You can edit your account info, including the account name, in your account settings. No support needed.

Two expletives? In what universe did I use two expletives? Some snark, yes.
I'm sorry you're so delicate you can't handle someone saying "holy crap." I wasn't even directing it at you. Dang, people. Just attack me for no reason at all, ok?

Oh, no. I used another expletive. I said "dang." I'll go wash my mouth out with soap.
Leaving the thread now. I won't be coming back to see your reply. If I want to be abused over trivial nonsense, I'll just hang out at my old junior high school.

No its not against the rules, because too many of us have legitimate similarities from our fandoms & whatnots.

& if they are doing it deliberately to impersonate another player, intent is a big factor.
when they are doing it to scam people & get up to shady deeds, the scam & shady deeds are the thing they are in trouble for...
but if its for humor as a "prank" on the other player, where is the harm?

Suppose I should admit that we do this in SL as a prank, all show up in the same avatar as someone or all show up with the same "display name" as them.

    • Dracarys

..many of my friends changed/ gave their account/characters similar names of their friends, for the sake of an intern joke and fun - not to copy and discredit the other person. This happens more frequently on Discord, because it's faster and doesn't cost you money, but I've seen it in ESO too. A friend of mine named one of his mules after my main character, and another friend named his characters in a different game after me and my friends in ESO.

I'm not saying that people don't do this to discredit or *** someone off, of course some people do - just take into consideration before you judge someone too harsh, that it might be because of other reasons too.

@Voxicity ZOS does not care. I had several cases where ppl stole my Name on other servers and spammed stupid and offensive comments in the zone chat (One Impersonater even admited it to me) and ZOS did not do anything.

All you can do is open up a new account and save all the similar looking names.

This is absurd. Just because someone made a variation of the name you chose doesn't mean they're out to copy you as a person. Everyone has had the "your username is taken" pop up at some point and have just got a way around it. This seems childish. If they happen to like a name similar to yours, looks like you'll have to deal with it, or find another name no one would think of so you can't get hurt.
