Unless you are judging "competitive" by the ability to get top-tier DPS in a DPS contest or by being the first choice of top-tier trial leaderboard teams, ALL races/class combinations can be competitive.
ALL race/class combinations can complete all the content in the game as long as the player behind them has sufficient skill and experience. Now, you may not find a Trials leaderboard group that wants to take you on a leaderboard run because they could have a more optimal build in your place, but that's a very narrow definition of competitive.
Short of finding a top-tier trials team, if you are struggling with completing any content on a non-optimal race/class combo - I hate to say it - its not the race/class that's the problem. Its your skill as a player.
(Your two examples are really strange. Dunmer make fine Magblades and have some bonuses for a DW stamblade. Nords with two handed and heavy armor - have you looked at PVP lately? Neither of these are the most optimal choice for that class and build, but they'll work perfectly fine.)
Well, in a pvp environment, where all resources are important, a 10% bonus on a resource (e.g. altmer magicka) ist extremely strong.
So, I disagree that racial bonuses are "only important for extreme top end dps". Playing a non optimum race for a class does significantly influence performance in pvp. Which is why I tend to oppose the notion of removing "any eace, any alliance".
Even in PVP, player skill is going to make a much bigger difference. Sure I could swap my Dunmer StamWarden to a Redguard and see an improvement in certain areas. But ultimately my success in PVP depends not on a little bit of extra stam regen or stam, it depends on how well I play that character. I can misuse a Dunmer just as badly as I can misuse a Redguard.
In other words, any fight that I win on my Dunmer, I would have won on a Redguard. On any fight that I lose with my Dunmer, going for a more optimal race was not going to make a difference. That may not be true of every player, but its true for me and I'm not really interested in the hypothetical debates about two players of equal skill but different races.2 -

Actually, they should be. Not only is it part of ESO lore, though the passives have changed some in each ESO game, it also adds some interesting depth to the game.
I like that the choice or race, like everything else with a character, has an affect. It is great and adds some depth vs the flat lame appearance aspect found in games such as SWTOR and such.0 -

But your post is racist then too. You are saying people can't be factions because of race. How dare you limit them because of their race.
In the same post you talk about passives, as if passive somehow connect to factions or have anything to do with how someone is in a faction. Didn't matter what they are in, they still have those passive. Stop trying to connect subjects that don't exist.
So you are saying people are not allowed to acknowledge what makes their race better? Khajiit's can crawl and sneak better, so it is racist against Bretons because they can't be born with that? Argonians are lizards that can swim with ease, nothing racist about acknowledging that. Dunmer pride themselves in their ability to rule and be mages. They hone the power of fire, nothing wrong with acknowledging that.
So how about this, you are completely correct, it is an mmo. You want the bonuses of a certain race you are happy to delete your character and change races
(or by a token).

It’s hard to tell anymore. There was a flurry of articles last year by people who thought drinking milk is racist. They’re crazy people. I’m waiting for astronomy to get harassed by the term “black holes.”

drinking milk, not making eye contact, being polite is also racist as it promotes the current white supremacist structure of etiquette, saying that you're not racist means obviously that you're a racist (but so does saying THAT you are a racist) and disagreeing with someone obviously means youre a ***.

Ruckly✭✭✭✭They are made up races in a made up world similar to that created by Tolkien. The fellowship of the ring had varying races each with varying strengths and weaknesses. The fellowship wasn't made up of 9 equivalent races in V-stripe jumpsuits. They might be equal in the eyes of Eru but they are not equivalent.
Except that weaknesses tend to pile up the further a race is from Eru or Valar, i.e. races and even different groups within the same race are odered in pretty strict hierarchy of higher and lesser races/groups.
Also, there were apparently higher and lesser genders, given that of all nine members of the fellowship, only Legolas was female. Which is something MMOs do not dare to replicate, e.g. in form of gender passives.
I am going to assume you watched the movies and never read the books. I am not even going to say what the real world institution your paragraph describes is.0 -

While this is a TES game, ESO is the only one with a built-in competitive aspect. It gives people much, much more incentive to play what is most effective for their role rather than what they enjoy, and as a result you get people who play "suboptimal" races for their role being mocked for playing a "suboptimal" race for their role.
It's a whole new brand of elitism, something that I didn't think would be possible but has happened to me, multiple times, even. Something about being an Argonian-exclusive damage dealer in the end-game trials scene just doesn't click right with people.
I love Argonians. I love their culture and their lore and simply how great they look. Does that mean I have to sacrifice my enjoyment of the game just to perform better by playing a different race?Best Argonian NA and I will fight anyone for it

I'm not super into the competitive end game trial scene (something I have a lot of respect for), but just to inform you, solely being an argonian-only DD would mean that, in many circumstances, your race is sub-optimal in terms of damage potential. No. You don't have to do anything. You can make a decision- play your preferred race despite the consequences, or prioritize optimization and thus play whatever race is optimal for your role. Being that this is an ES game, the various races are, indeed, central to gameplay, and from my recollection have always come with the various "bells and whistles" which distinguish them. It certainly wasn't something that surprised me when I started playing this game, I had played Elder Scrolls games for many years and they had always incorporated this concept.1 -
