I love ESO, and have for the longest, but let's face it - the character creator is one of the most basic and worst in the MMO industry. Each race has restrictions. Each race has hair and eye colors that you can't get for others, and the pattern blocks for eye and hair colors do not match the color when selected. Then the build of the body and height are very restricted as well. The face, the choices on each section are very few and far between. Let's face it, most characters look alike out there.
Hairstyles are very few, and most suck. I want to be able to make my hair design - ie, control its length, and have better choices of color. What if I wanted my girl to have long (down to the shoulders) pigtails with bangs and are set low and above the ears? What if I wanted them short and more towards the back? For color, black with a purple highlight or fiery red with an orange tint? What if I want swept bangs? What about knee length straight hair? What about curly? STO, EVE Online, GW2, AION, and I can name over a dozen more games, including small ones, that offer these options. BDO has one of the best character creators I've seen. (I just don't like the game, and it is too cartoony, so EVE and AION has them beat there).
Then the body construction is very limited as well, and I don't see any difference in the game itself. Everyone seems to be the same height and same build. I mean, come on, every other game out there allows you to have a short, fat guy or a tall, muscular Adonis, a woman with large breasts or flat as a board, a girly looking man and a manly woman, and everything else in between. What if I want to create a midget for my hero. Are the devs racist against dwarves? (I know the Dwarven Dwemer are extinct, but surely their genes live on) They allow imagination and diversity. ESO is WAY behind. It's amazing how some of the NPCs have some of these traits, but characters do not. (except height... everyone is the same height and pretty much build)
The skin color shows many option hues, but I notice most are the same, and they jump. This is old first year millennial styling. The same even goes for eye color.
The face is the most important, and this game is VERY lacking when constructing it. There are so few options, and I am very disappointed in what I create, and what I am given when I exit the creator, as they never match. I have made some beautiful women in the creator, only to accept, and see a hideous monster on the character screen. It pains my heart.
I understand that they want to keep racial traits within traits, but let's get real... there is cross-breading. They even have it in the storyline - Lissa's mother was half giant and half Nord, so to keep things real, there has to be some give. IDEA: on character creation, when choosing race, have it ask if there is a mix. THEN when two races are selected, of course, the skills will have to blend. Have the player choose the dominant race, then choose which racial skills between the two the character will have - more diversity. Of course they will have limits on the major racial traits like ear size if part elf, or teeth size if part ogre. Maybe only light skin if part vampire or bushier eyebrows and fuller facial hair and body hair if part werewolf.
Character creation is one of the most important aspects in an RPG game. Realism is very important as well. I am glad that Bethesda continues to build on story ideas, a few game mechanics, and packages, but don't forget improving design and improving what is there. That is one of the things that has kept EVE Online so strong for almost 20 years (They keep improving the aesthetics of ships and the character design on top of continuing to add to everything else) Their character creation in 2003 was almost exactly like ESO's is now. See what I mean about first millennial? Way behind.
Then, there are the accessories. Why are we limited to only one? What if I want her to have earrings and a necklace and a nose ring. What if I want my guy to have one earring, a circlet, and a nose ring? Come one people, get with the times. NONE of the other MMOs don't restrict in this area, and the ones that have aren't around anymore.
Keep up the great work. Oh yes, and if and when you do make this a reality, then character redesign should be free for one time.
