    If I had had a clue the direction they would take this game in, I would only have had one crafter. I learned Nirnhoned on 33 items on 6 characters. I've learned many motifs on 4 characters. Now, with the upcoming changes, the only reason you will ever really need to know a motif for will be account-wide, and there's next-to-no reason to ever craft any piece of gear ever again (not counting Master Writs.)

    Well every update and change makes me glad I built my main to do everything I ever wanted in the game. Motifs, achievements, master writs, and now transmute fully favors this approach at least from a saving gold and farming approach.

    It took forever to get 360 skill points to make this happen, but as they continue to implement changes, I'm glad I did it.

    Who else has 1 character they play on (I have alts for storage and crafting mat farming but I only play on my main) for most everything in the game?

    Do you alt-oholics hate this design implementation or take it as the price of admission for easy role flexibility?

    The only thing I dislike about it is the account-sharing of champion points and dye unlocks, I'd far rather my characters all achieved those things for themselves. Doubtless not the answer you were expecting, but some of us play multiple characters rather than "a main plus alts" and want to experience the whole game equally with them. I could never go back to playing a single character only, I find that it becomes too much like a chore if every session you log in the same character with no variety.

    You know, if you REALLY like to play hard mode it's as simple as this: don't use your CP... TATA RARAAAAA MAGIC!!!!!

    But really, just don't use them and you are all set for hardmode. Maybe add 1 per day or 2 so you can make it real.

    My main is the only one I care about doing ALL THE THINGS on. The rest are built/are being built to take on a specific role in specific situations. For example, my mag DK is who I am running PvP on, my stam NB is being built to do all the stealing and murdering, I have a baby healer and a baby tank. But my main does all content and is the only one I care about achievements on, she's the only one that learns all the crafting motifs, recipes, furniture plans, etc.

    14 characters, all DDs. 2 Magicka, 1 Stamina of each class except Warden. (With U17 I’ll add another Warden to have 3 of each class)

    All have maxed Fighters & Mages Guild, Undaunted and all Crafting.
    7 characters can do 9 Traits (have been lazy with others).
    All have maxed Inventory and all Horse upgrades, as well as bank.
    2 characters know 56/56 Motifs and 3 more are getting close (yes that includes Buoyant Armiger).

    Everyone has legendary BiS gear on them, at least 2+ sets per character, and are ready for endgame PVE (I play what’s needed for my team)

    I also do all writs on every character each day.

    Miss the times we had VR ranks when having alts actually involved some work, and not just a few hours to get 1-50.

    My character are pretty fluid in status. They all have roles for crafting (hirelings/writs) or storage. But then I move them in and out of active duty, whether to gain skill points or to level skills for future use. In particular:
    • My original main is a Breton sorcerer. He's my only character who's killed Molag Bal. He's now my chief crafter. He's also my only non-templar who's healed a DLC dungeon.
    • My character with highest Undaunted rank is an Altmer sorcerer.
    • My character with second-highest Undaunted rank is a Breton templar. He's my only character who's healed a vet DLC dungeon. He's one of only three characters I have who as enough Alliance rank for Warhorn and Purge. Long ago he was my main enchanter and alchemist.
    • My Bosmer nightblade was my main provisioner before Homestead led me to consolidate crafting on one character. He's my only character who's maxed out Legerdemain or Thieves Guild. He has the highest Alliance rank of any of my characters (for Vigor).
    • I have another Altmer sorcerer and two other Breton templars.
    • Both Altmer sorcerers were at some point my main enchanter.
    • Almost all my characters do consumable crafting writs.
    • My crafting main and thieving main are maxed in all six crafts and do writs accordingly. The same was true of my #2 Breton templar until I activated him as a dungeon character for the random dungeon event.
    • Several other characters are maxed in clothing, and do crafting writs on the days that rubedo leather is the required ingredient.
    • My Dunmer nightblade healed a few dungeons for the recent event.
    • I long ago leveled up a Redguard DK, but I only use her for crafting/mule.
    • In the recent events (Harvest through New Life) I leveled an Imperial warden, an Altmer warden, and the third of the Breton templars mentioned above. I'm using master writs to speed the Imperial's leveling of (stamina) skill lines. Maybe I'll tank with him some day. I also enjoy magden healing as a change of pace.

    Since my first character is a stamblade, if I didn't have alts:

    I wouldn't have ever done vet HR, AA or SO;
    I wouldn't have made it to stage 9 on VMA;
    I wouldn't have completed any DLC dungeons on vet (though for the record I think I've only ever completed RoM and WGT on vet, since I will NEVER PUG any of them );
    I would never have gotten Emperor, and therefore the Platinum (PS4) trophy;
    I would have gotten bored and probably stopped playing again.

    Having a variety of characters means I can do most content, and in a different way on each of them. At the moment I'm finally skilling up my healer for use. I do have a Tank but as he's a NB I'm a little hesitant to PUG even normal dungeons with him.

    Basically I play just one character. I do have 6 other max level characters (and one at level 46) but don't play them seriously, nor do I try to clear content with them. Two of them really had only one purpose, and that was to check out the Home base areas in Cyrodiil for the opposing factions, since those were the only truly off limit areas for my main. After that they got relegated to being mules. I mostly leveled them when I was bored or during events when XP was easy to come by. Plus they enabled me to do more dailies and thus get more event boxes at the same time.

    One character is my original "main" but got shelved after two days of playing since I did not like the way he looked (made him too short) and the voice I picked started to really annoy me. Back then we did not have any options to redo our characters appearance, so on the third day of early access, way back in 2014, I rolled up my current main. The other character got to be my first mule and then became a backup crafter. These days he's set up as a super speedy mat farming character. He can also serve as a an off-tank, but I almost never do dungeons with him.

    The rest are alts I rolled just to check out the other classes - mostly for PVP purposes. Now that they are all fully leveled and, got decent gear sets, and enough skill points to function properly, I do occasionally play with them. Just to have a bit of a change of pace. I did also slowly build crafting skills on couple of them so that I could farm Master Writs on them. But don't really bother all that often with that either. (Doing writs is mind crushingly boring, and I value my life way too much to waste it on a such an unrewarding grind.)

    I mostly play one character for the simple reason that I do not like repeating content, and since achievements and stuff linked to them (like furnishings and what not) are character based, it makes sense to focus on doing all the content on one character. And then there are all those motifs, recipes and furnishing plans I've collected... I really could not imagine doing it all over again on another character.

    I have 400 hours at this point on my main sorc Healer. Though doesn't really steal or kill for me.

    I have four other healers for experimenting.

    1 tank cause who doesn't need a tank

    1 questionable we tank that is afraid to queue for even a normal dungeon.

    I spend most of my time on my main for socializing and out of habit.

    I have alts but I have mostly abandoned them. My sorcerer alt is the only one that really interests me and only if I use random drops from quests. The rest I see no end game potential in them until my main is set. And my main is a tank with no rotation and all audibles which can get exhausting and sits at around CP 220. The upside is I always win.

    I to have only 1 class/ 1 main. My Nightblade that they destroyed long time ago and they added new class to the game that have a way better workflow, and up'ed other classes or skills that er are Meta-fitting. And no luck in groups play, because i don't run this META-builds, and have a hard time today soloing endgame(Another system i hate in today's mmorpgs - Over and over dungeon run, to get armor A - for the next patch to get armor B - etc.).

    Also I to did all as you did and i guess even way more then you did on my one character/class.

    But still I am only playing my (1 hotbar: 1 hand & Shield) Shadowknight wannabe. Though i see it as a waste of time, and that the game - system does not offer the freedom i need in a game this days.

    Well every update and change makes me glad I built my main to do everything I ever wanted in the game. Motifs, achievements, master writs, and now transmute fully favors this approach at least from a saving gold and farming approach.

    My main was not my main at the time. I did the whole make a toon for crafting thing and then as she leveled crafting from the loot my higher main at the time dropped, I one day decided that I kind of liked her a lot and then she became my main. She does it all for crafting and has tons of motifs but not all as I took 8 months off from the game. But having a character that I play and love also do all my crafting really is probably the best thing I ever did. I have alts up the wazoo, but this one, she's always one I go back to even if I take time off of her.

    Boy, was I dumb.

    This. This is the backside of the outfitter system. Once you have a motif page learned on a character, there is zero reason to learn it on any other character ever again.

    Also, for crafters, there is very little reason to offer rare styles for other people any more. Just make it in basic Breton and have them use their own outfit system to change it.

    We already know that motif knowledge and trait research factors very little into master crafter writs dropchance anyway, so right now we might as well have account wide motif knowledge, it's the de facto situation.

    It's also another kick to the crafters, who are already lying somewhere in the gutter. I do hope that at least eventually they will make us able to craft outfits for one another, otherwise I'll just close down what little crafting business I have going. 9 trait crafters are aplenty due to the research speed scrolls for both gold and crowns, and you don't need any rare motifs learned any more, just craft it in a basic style and let people decide the look themselves.

    As happy as I am to finally be able to customize my own look, I also see a clear end to my crafting business, which had already diminished progressively over the years.

    All my NB is for is ganking in Cyro. My magsorc is for pretty much everything else, though I've got a stamdk and a magplar that I've plinked around on for funsies. Only the NB and magsorc have done anything noteworthy, and the magsorc's the only one I've bothered doing all the crafting research on.

    I tried to do that on my Magblade. Got every Skyshard and Skill point (excluding PvP ranks which he's only in the 20s I believe), unlocked practically everything, maxed out all skill lines, etc. IT WAS TOO DAMN EXPENSIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Respecing Skills/CP/Attributes every time something struck my fancy or I wanted to do something different was the absolute worst as it just drained me financially every time. Switching from Magic to Stamina to Tank and back again, just became a financial disaster and just became more tedious than fun. I'm much happier now that I have a Stamblade and Magblade to switch between, with the occasional odd experiment change thrown it to keep it fresh but not financially damning.

    I have my main, a redguard stamina warden dps, who has the most skill points, maxed out all the crafting skills, and does pretty much everything in the game possible.

    I have many alts, but they aren't used as much, and tend to be role specific story wise. My DK orc, for example, has to this point only done the majority of Orsinium. While I have another character focuses on the Dark Brotherhood, for example. Even tho I expect to do those things on my main as well, because there's more immersion for me on my main, some things have to wait until it makes sense in the flow of a story for me to follow through. The only time I break my immersion is during dungeons or trials.

    Radical opinion:

    The game would be better if you only had one character slot. You heard me, no alts, no jumping ship to the new meta, no farming writs on your mules, none of that.

    Imagine if everyone was invested in playing their actual character instead of just burning through content as efficiently as possible.
