I've not voted because while I don't think it's necessarily rude, I do automatically try and avoid head on collisions and can't answer both! Never even thought about why, it's just a natural reaction?

If I was a ghost irl and you see me walking through you, would you feel nice? I think not! It's extremely rude and I put every player who does this on ignore list. Just jump above me, mother didn't teach you this?

Why would anyone be offended? It's just a bunch of pixels on your screen. It's not you, it's an in-game avatar. If someone doesn't understand it, then maybe it's time to seek a professional help. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying roleplayers are insane. In fact it's the roleplayers that understand PERFECTLY what "in character" and "out of character means"... And that no action done IC does or should affect you in any way OOC. In this case to most players other avatars are pretty much transparent, unless you have or want to interact with them.

What next? Killing people in Cyrodiil is rude? Shall we flower our enemies with cherry blossoms? Also, do note, that all the bosses in trials are EXTREMELY rude, they should just have a tea and chat with us while trying to convince us to their cause and just.. move away if they fail.

I can understand things that are really annoying, like pets interfering with your interactions or people leaving trash in harvest nodes (they respawn just fine, but you run for a chest or plant and find lockpick or worms), but just riding/walking through a character? There is no interaction ever possible. Well, unless it's plain trolling, but that's a whole other thing.

TBH. I'd rather not hear rude "your mom" jokes and not see people picking on noobs and going full hostile in zone chat.

And, most of all, it's an MMO not a single player game. Most people are here to grind, kill and repeat the same boring, mind numbing stuff over and over again.

PS. Good to see most of the forum dwellers see things the way I do.

Honestly, it is all part of the same thing. Running through people, leaving stuff in resource nodes, pets in the banks that block people, teabagging in Cyrodiil. Different levels, to be certain, but all part of the same thing. Where people draw the line, and why, really tells a lot about individuals, and what people think of that tells something about the community they are part of.

A person who modifies their behavior in a social situation (that is, when others are around) to extend consideration to another player, especially when they don't have to, says something different than a person who doesn't. The cognitive understanding that the player is in a social situation, and is thus willing, or not willing, to apply social courtesies and consideration to those around them, speaks volumes about the individual.

It really doesn't matter whether you are pixels in a game or standing on the sidewalk in New York. Social is social.

Fortunately, most of the people in the game do seem to favor avoiding collisions. This is, after all, a learned response in a social setting when two people meet. We don't normally run around our local city mowing down people on the sidewalk. At least, I hope we don't have many people like that in the game or the forum. Most people have learned that by the time they are old enough to play this game.

I would be interested in finding out how many people mutter "excuse me" when they accidentally run into someone in the game, even though that person cannot hear them. This is also a learned behavior in a polite society, and one that an increasing number of people in the real world seem to have not learned.

Now, I do want to clarify, as the above could sound like running through someone is some sort of a capital crime. No. Almost everyone realizes that we can run through other players, and there are many times when we must do this. This is why we can run through other players, after all. It happens. It should be allowed to happen.

Try to not ride into players, its just natural, however many places its hard to avoid because its many players around.

I wonder if any of the people in this thread going on about how since there is no player collision this sort of thing doesn’t bother them and they don’t see why anything like this would bother anyone, are some of the people who get upset when someone t-bags them.

I will always ride around people only becasue I am attributing a real world rule to the game instinctively. As far as the game is concerned there is nothing wring with a players riding through another player.

Because of this thread, I gave went ahead and tried to avoid everyone yesterday. It was absolutely impossible in and near Vivec City. There were too many people by the guards at the gate, too many at the banks, too many by the crafting stations, too many on the dock from the crafting stations to the crates where you turn in writs and too many by every single vendor. Elden root? yeah right, there's just no chance. For the people that voted yes, can you be more specific? Is this only about big open spaces? For the most part, you just plain can't be talking about cities. Even in Skywatch I couldn't avoid people and it was just in the regular areas where people weren't even throwing mudballs. The game absolutely would not function without us walking through (not over) each other. Even on the roads outside of cities there were a couple of times when I couldn't avoid what would be a little contact. What exactly is the situation where it's rude?

    No, it is not rude
i suspect most of the players who hit the red button generally see it as a tiny effortless courtesy, and also recognize it as a "no harm, no foul" situation. i usually do the sidestep if i'm not in a hurry or otherwise distracted. if i voted blue (i'll find out once this posts) it's because i was reading strictly to the 'rudeness' part of the question. the folks who are coming in and saying it's so offensive and whatnot are probably pulling people's chains, for the most part. the internet's original definition of trolling was to pretend to sincerely adopt a non-sensible stance, which requires some subtlety to get a response, and i think that's what i'm seeing here.

the people who are flying off the handle about "OMG i can't believe people these days are such babies!" are being classically trolled, and are showcasing their own over-sensitivity (barring those who are counter-trolling, which is rare in a forum with identities). that's a shame because it makes it obvious that they intend to come across as tough and realistic but are instead coming across as gullible and soft. if your jaw dropped at a passionately red comment, that "snowflake" got your goat.

It is because it is effortless for riders to pass a character without running him/her over and there are no real reason to not avoid other players.

But accidents tend to happen when nobles who think too much of themselves get to riding a horse, they should just sit and drink their tea, they are more skilled in talking of weather rather than riding somethihng other than a pony ;)

When I see people in the crown store I'll try and guess where I can stand to be right behind them and just stare. Sometimes I do random emotes. Sometimes I get on my mount and stand inside them. I know I'm rude.

The best is when you and the other player are approaching, and you’re obviously trying to avoid each other, but you keep moving in the same direction and eventually pass through one another.

I tend to go around people especially in cities because I’m generally not paying close attention to whether they’re a player or an NPC Which you can’t ride through.
