/Whisper behaving strangely

When someone whispers me and I whisper back and we start talking, I don't see her/his replies by name anymore. Instead, her/his username is shown. And it's a bit of confusing, especially if I whisper to more people.

    What Platform?

If PC< there are addons that might be messing with you.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Gary Gravestink "I am glad you died, I needed the help"

Yes, pc eu. I play vanilla.

I started noticing this few days (weeks) ago. And by people whom I didn't previously know. Friends are okay, always seeing their character names.

There is an option in the default UI settings that will determine whether you prefer seeing the username or character name of the player, which affects both chat and the name shown above their head.
If your setting is different than how they send a message to you then you will see different.

    For example:
You have username preferred shown on your settings.
I could send you a message to @maboleth and you would reply to @Mystrius_Archaion because it is a "username exchange", but if I sent a message from my character "Mystrius" to your character "Whoever" then you would see it from @Mystrius_Archaion but the reply name would show as the originating character "Mystrius" because it is a "character name exchange".

The setting doesn't quite work perfect, but that's more an issue with the entire chat system being relatively messy.
