The DLC are good. ZOS keeps getting better and refining their storytelling. If you buy Morrowind you can play battlegrounds. Cyrodiil is the same old same old. Game performance has improved, hopefully they can keep doing more to continue boosting the experience for all.
Not to sound mean, but have you actually searched the forums?? I see these "Hey guys!!! I've been away from the game for X months...Is it worth coming back?" threads about every 2-3 days...

I also came back a little while ago after making a post like this and things have improved a lot. There is still many things that need fixing, some big and small, but overall a lot of systems that needed overhauls got them which is a big step in the right direction.
Plus the little things like quick action on exploits, contests, and freebies here and there are really nice tokens that keep me coming back. If you have friends here and it seems you do, I'd say it's totally worth another go.

Not sure if you heard, but Rome fell, there was a "Medieval" period where scholarship and civilization ebbed for a few centuries, then a Renaissance. A whole new hemisphere was discovered. Well, I say discovered. There were people living there, of course. The whole hemisphere got divided up into nation states. Also, several nation states have been experimenting with some interesting adaptions of Athenian democracy crossed with the Republic. It's all very exciting, though the experiment is kind of at a crucial point right now. Oh yeah, this weird sect of Judaism came out of nowhere and pretty much took over.
And that's just covering Europe!
You should really get caught up.
